secretagent09: In the U.S. a mongrel is a homeless dog that runs the streets. Skinny, dirty, can't find food and water. However, when these dogs are cleaned up they make the best pets.

serene56: None of these words are used here, except for mongrel occasionally like Pat said.
I have never heard 'cobber' used my entire life, except for maybe during an old black and white movie played on Anzac Day.
Yes we can thank Neighbours, Paul Hogan etc for promoting the Aussie stereotype overseas and the cultural cringe that many of us who reside here have to put up with
Well I'm just talking about real Oz like us poms see it, read through the whole thread and see if you can see what really happened .

We don't 'put a shrimp on the barbie' either I'd suggest anyone who uses the word 'cobber' in this day and age would be attempting humour toward a new Australian or trying to be facetious.
What!!! no shrimp on the Barbie either, the new oz if not so colonial
And we actually dont call prawns "shrimp"... Most are boiled at sea then snap frozen, then eaten cold (no need for BBQ'ing). I prefer to buy them green and clean them, then fry them in garlic and chilli with some lime juice.

daears: bogans are people who like to play round with cars and do burnouts and enjoy heavey metal music and like drinking and parties and mostly dress in black clothing and have mullet haircuts etc. Not met any pj wearing bogans in my world where there are alot of bogans. Wearing the right atire and boots and haircuts show that they are bogans. And that's important to them.
The term bogan (/'bo?g?n/) is an Australian and New Zealand slang word used to describe a person of lower working-class background, whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplify values and behaviour considered unrefined or unsophisticated...like Christmas party ‘unpleasantness’ and rein in its habit of chucking sickies on days following major sporting events, another ‘promotion’/buzzword is likely by the end of the fiscal year.Loll. The word bogan has had a bad rap of late – still associated with wife beaters, flannelette, VB, utes and mullets... While there are variations, the crux of the discussion remains the same. A bogans mentality derived from convict who has taken root and it appears that all that matters to bogans are football, booze and gambling but likable part is their not snobs or hipsters.
The tattoo could also represent the bogan being tribal for eternity, or in love with its current mating partner for eternity. The bogan favourite holiday destination is to scuttle onto a cheap flight to Bali or Thailand, get its hair braided, drink Bintang or Chang, and become exceptionally sunburnt.

Ah so anyone who uses the word 'cobber' in this days and age would be attempting humour toward a new Australian... Nearly 30 years here and still some people see me as "new" -funny.
Meh, cut and paste with no referencing... I think there is interesting detail even within the term "bogan". Such as the Eureka stockade flag (Southern cross) being a favoured tattoo, especially on the neck, and the idol-worship of a murderous bush ranger (Ned Kelly), also a favourite tattoo/car sticker.
There seems to be a lot of crossover these days with "Houso's" (Housing commission tennants), but maybe thats because they tend to be a bit bogan as well.

pat8lanips: Yes, you probably will always be seen as "new". I've been in Queensland 20 years, still get called a cockroach (person from NSW) from time to time.
