Being intimate involves a mingling of souls, a sharing of hearts and total trust. This is something we all long for because we were designed to connect with another. So why are so many afraid of intimacy?

I'd think a lot are fearful of it due to past experiences and/or hurt and an unwillingness to risk it again. Who knows...

Because totally leaving go, and trusting somebody absolutely with our most fragile feelings is a difficult and scary thing to do.

The fear that someone might take my money. And more than it's money in general, money doesn't love you and money won't run away with a buddy and now we value this indifference in people. The love of money founded the concept of cool and this leaves no room for anything else. Money contends nothing but money.
We are spoiled of choice...and careful of the image we have built... Why risk showing yourself as a human being with all its weakness when you can keep the image alive and score points for your ego...
The love of money is best expressed in global capitalism where you're in competition with every single individual upon the face of the earth. In the old less capitalist days the belief was that money/capitalism was just a tool to be used and Christianity or community or patriotism or even trade unions should dominate the spirit of a place. This all changed in the 1980s. The fear of intimacy is related to the love of money and the world of unparalleled competion we now live in.

If the two people are right together, then there should be no fear of intimacy

Not sure if we fear intimacy or that intimacy can lead to love which often ends up with lts of pain and hurt. No intimacy = no hurt/pain
However, if love comes first then the intimacy will follow naturally

as you said intimacy is a connecting of souls and it is also a connection of energy. So even when you part they still stay there for longer it is why some people are way harder to get over than others. Some become a part of you.
