I chose to work on myself...self love and let go of the things I cant control....that means just looking after my own little corner of the world and letting things be as they are....letting go of control is very freeing....

Self gratification sounds kinda scary to me... I've always thought happiness one pursues through other's happiness...the most... I don't see happiness as a goal, do what you feel is right and if that makes a happy outcome, good, if not, just move on and do what you feel is right again...
Aside from being a parent, which is a reward in itself, my other happiness and passions were music and writing, neither of which I do anything like enough... All the while I'm working (which is another happiness, when it goes to plan) the creative pastimes will be on hold... 7 years from now will be a different story, or at least that's the hope...
Much like M4 said...constantly trying to better myself and look for contentment....and as Mercedes would say just worrying about my own backyard....let others worry about theirs.

To be honest I don't believe happiness will be normal until western society hits rock bottom. The breakdown of respect and punctuation, depression without the tragic circumstances, the love of bad boys and Donald Trump and imo reflect the comfortable person's need for nasty, the emasculation and boredom of being wealthy, and the first world invention of sorrow. The super ego torments itself in lieu of real problems - it's to counter decadence(to keep feet on the ground). The pursuit of happiness is a sorry affair, the generation said to have never had it so good is the most depressed, the boredom of being spoilt goes out of it way to make the world unpleasant.

Looking for happiness suggests that we are not happy in the first place even though we've been searching most of our lives. But the true goal of life is meaning not happiness. Without meaning in our lives we can only experience fleeting bouts of happiness. Ironically, true meaning usually comes through authentic suffering, that is, suffering of the soul. To experience that suffering and find some healing within ourselves we need to wade through the muck from time to time. Where we do not go willingly, sooner or later we will be dragged. So, maybe the way to happiness comes through facing the unfaceable, accepting our suffering and searching for meaning in our lives.

I think the suffering only happens to those lost of their true self. I know people who have known themselves from a very young age and never seem to have had suffering....yet others suffer till the day they die.
