Here in Alberta they generally start around $245,000 for a fixer-upper to around $500,000 and beyond dependng on location. There are smaller homes for less but the average is around $350,000. Less than they were a year and half ago when things were insane and there were bidding wars on the very few houses up for sale.
Around here it really depends on what area you want to live in. You can get a house on the West Side of Charleston for $40-50k because it's a bad neighborhood. Downtown is looking more around $70-120k. South Hills is $150k+ for one side of the road and $300k+ for the other. In Kanawha City (my neighborhood), the price is all over the place. River lots are $500k min, behind those are around $200k, the other side of the tracks are less at around $125k, then up on the hill starts around $1mil.
And then we have smaller towns all around us and these can vary all over the chart too.
We are lucky here though as the housing crisis has barely affected us.
airliner: I can't believe some of those single family house prices....
there is nothing here under $450K nowadays
and the r/e taxes are up to wazoo I guess I should consider moving
Dublin is getting cheaper by the day..apartments have dropped upon average by 80,000-100,000 euro in the last year alone
Parts of it are becoming Ghost Towns, some folks are simply handing the keys over to the banks, others are moving back home with family and renting out
Sparky55: I bought a new one 3 1/2 years ago for 169K. Up until a month ago it was valued at about 190K. Looks like I'll be renting it out vice selling it when I head for Afghanistan this winter.
Because I'm kind and senstive...I'll give you $50k as is.....
