Day 1. Cold, wet miserable day (weather wise that is). It just reached 10 degs a short time ago. So nice to lie in bed this morning and finish reading my book. Then get up and cook breakfast instead of the Vita-Brits before rushing off to work.
Managed to write some more on the trip I did last year and catch a movie inbetween writer's block.
I had not really been planning on retiring this year, just in the front of my mind because of work. But YES, I could manage without working. It finally got to the stage where I did not want to go to work.
I have been working full-time for nearly 44 years and have had 4 breaks of 3 months of not working (age 20). First time I was sick and couldn't do anything. Second time was when I "retired" at 30 and the wife was working to support us. Until she got pregnant and I had to find a job. Next time around was when the family went to Europe for an extended holiday (age 40).
Next time around was when I turned 50, quit my job after 20 years there and moved to Melb to get married. And had no real need to get a job for a while so did the honeymoon bit, a bit of travel and a few renos on my house in Sydney.
So looks like I was overdue for my next extended break.

Ta muchly Jem. My way of putting this is that I am in a position to decide if I want to work.
Have not enjoyed the first day of winter weather but have refrained from lighting the fire.
Still waitimg for the cold to really hit. Them might think about doing the greay nomad stuff and heading north.

Now its time too take the bull by the horns and make a few of the better decisions in life, instead off thinking about work, start by thinking what do you want to do or see now you have the time, you could do a rushed road trip or you could take the time to plan an awesome trip!
good luck, offcourse you will need to feed us all the details off the trip? Plus put it on you tube! So to pay for the trip from advertisers once it goes viral?

I always tell people who are in a good financial position to retire - if there is anything you want to do, if you don't do it between the age of 60-70 then there is every chance you won't do it?
Usually about that age our health can take a downwards turn - not everybody is the same, in my day to day stuff I see lots of very healthy 70 you but the sad ones are the ones about that age or younger who are very very wealthy, have worked hard all their lives, had businesses and they have drawn the short straw in the health stakes - and no amount of money can change that?
So I say - BLOODY GO FOR IT WASH
