The Social Worker

Of days that are dark,
And those that seem bright,
Sometimes, like the weather, mind isn’t right,
It gets harder to get up and smile,
Do as you always do, go that extra mile,
It can be miserable as the rain,
Sorting through, easing others’ pain,
They’re thinking of themselves, not of you,
They’re not being selfish, they just don’t know what to do,
And always you are there, you give and give,
Sometimes forgetting, you too need to live,
So many need help in life out there,
Sometimes a hole in their life, a rip to mend or a tear,
You forget there’s only one of you, numbers don’t balance or compare,
You can’t help everyone, it’s too much to bear,
Others' weight on your shoulders will get too heavy, no time for fun,
Still you carry on, though just remember, you’re not superhuman,
Just a very special one.

andrew, a nice comment on the underpaid, and under appreciated workers of our societies who try to make our lives better in myriads of ways, and get little in return. Hats off to them and you! ;-)

Yes, we see many of them here, from charitable organizations, walking stairs tirelessly, ringing bells, trying to reach every family, asking for the orphaned, disadvantaged, disabled children, telling heart-rending stories. I make a point of inviting them in and suggesting that they should have some rest and refreshment. I agree, they are special people, cause what they are volunteering for brings no personal gain to them and, what's more, they are compassionate beyond measure.

An ex prime minister of ours, Paul Keating, suggested that the future of the successful nation depends on volunteering our free time to help others.

Nice caring thoughts Andrew....usually the ones who tell you what they have done, do very little, it's always the unsung heroes.....Niahteddybear handshake

Wonderful poem Andrew and yes sometimes helpers need to pull themselves up short or the work will drown them. Its the nature of these people though, you have caught it so well here.teddybear

I couldn't do what they do - nurses, social workers, teachers and all the people who have to put themselves out there for people. I admire them greatly for it - a lovely tribute Andrew
