Love Is A Decision

"Love is a decision, it is a judgement, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgement and decision." - Erich Fromm - (The Art of Loving) “But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.” Kahlil Gibran – (The Prophet)

Don't Worry, Be Happy

The Great Kiskadee (Pitangus Sulpharatus) is indigenous to Central and South America, the Caribbean and Southern Texas. I have added two more videos. One actually shows a kiskadee in action singing his song. The other gives an audio of one kiskadee calling and another kiskadee answering.

CATS

Dedicated to Cat Lovers everywhere, including my dear friend Travis.

Tribute To A Vulture

(iambic pentameter) The vulture indigenous to my native Trinidad is the Black Vulture which is called "The Corbeau". As the poem says, they are very unsightly looking but once airborne, they become marvellous flying and gliding machines, and are delightful to view as they ride the air currents so effortlessly way up in the sky.

Overcoming Depression

dedicated to those who are dealing with depression

Blue Sky, White Clouds

We are part of Nature and Nature is part of us

The Hummingbird

Trinidad, my native island, is sometimes referred to as the “Land of the Hummingbird” because more than sixteen different species of hummingbird have been recorded on the island. The indigenous Native Americans, the Arawaks, named the island, "Iere", which, in their language, means "Land of the Hummingbird". Two hummingbirds are shown on the island's coat of arms.

POETRY AND PROSE

As a child, growing up, most of the poems I learned at school were of the traditional type. Memorizing and reciting them, which I enjoyed, were part of the learning exercise. Free verse, a modern form of poetry, was a new experience for me. Over the years, I jotted down some of my thoughts on things, especially, on Nature topics. I always considered such writings to be prose. It was only after I learned of free verse, that I saw that they could also be viewed as poetry with a slight variation in the line layout to create a sense of metre. I referred to such writing as poetic prose and labelled some of my earlier poems as such.

I made some adjustments to my previous piece, "The Sound Of Silence". This piece, "The Power Of Silence", allows a fuller treatment of Silence. Thanks to those who commented on "The Sounds of Silence".

Lament of a Jaded Lover

I tried to put myself in the position of a jaded lover and wrote this piece. I think there are persons here to whom it may apply. It does not apply to myself directly. (Iambic Tetrameter)

Nature's Lesson For Parents

I actually witnessed this event. I wrote this piece after reading a poem entitled "Too Much Love Can Kill" which pointed out that several children from middle class families end up killing themselves through drug use or suicide after they move away from over-protective parental control which imposes a lot of pressure on them to be super achievers.

Clouds and Sunshine

My Special Haven

Malala

This is a tribute to Malala, recent recipient of a Nobel Prize.

Sailors In the Sky

Since I was a child, I have always admired the effortless gliding of vultures up in the sky. Among other gliding birds listed are albatross, eagle, condor, stork, frigatebird and seagull. It is a truly delightful to watch the marvellous gliding action of these birds way up in the sky as they ride the air currents. This poem is dedicated to them: the genuine avian sailors in the sky. (I have made some adjustments to the original to include some other gliding birds in the body of the piece).

LOVE OF LIFE

OK, so you and your bf/gf or spouse have broken up, or he/she has died. Though it may not be easy, now it is time to get a hold of yourself and move on with your life. This poem is dedicated to such persons. Remember: "Love of life is more precious than all other love"

A Flower - Children's Poem

I wrote this poem for my nephew's eight year old daughter to encourage her to write poetry. She has an excellent command of English at her age. Writing this made me recall some of the poems I learned at school as a child. I hope I have succeeded, at least to some extent, in capturing the innocence and joyful feeling of childhood. I also hope it would bring out the child in some of you; I would like your comments from such a perspective since this is a children's poem. Or perhaps you can share it with children, get their comments and post them. Thank you!

Welcome To New CS Poets

There has been a lot of activity recently here on Poetry Corner. Several of the more senior poets seem to have taken a break. Let's hope they return soon. In the meantime, several new poets have appeared. This piece is a welcome to them. Poetry is larger than any individual or group of indivduals. The show must go on. I invite all poets, including the new, to post their views on Poetry Corner. We can all benefit from each others' views. Thanks!
