MY FOREVER VALENTINE

its been almost three years since I touched your beautiful face; and life has gone by at such a very slow pace! I long for the day when our eyes will once again meet; and from that moment on; every day spent together; shall be a wonderful treat! have no fear; for I shall always sing your praise; and our lives will never cease; but for right now; dream of me; while you rest in peace! you shall always be; my forever valentine!

Sydney Sales Yard

A bonny mare if 'ere there was one
Stood tall in the Sydney Sales Yard.
The odds, the ring, the sales yard;-
And soon they beat her down.

The bid lot forty three, recall
(If memory serves me right)
Where stood there men as tough as nails
And bidding was a fight.

To and 'fro the bids were called
Until she was knocked down
to Eight Thousand -
For men in Blue Collars this was a lot of dough.

So Standardbred "miss milly molly"
Was walked out of the ring;-
"Not much to look at - a slender horse",-
One onlooker said;-
But he was not the man who bought her; -
Risking hard won bread.

One Friday night at the trots (old Harold Park)

Rapt in attention
As the pace car quickens
Horses score up behind
Like a phalanx
Seven off the front
And five behind
Makes a full field of twelve

Drivers in formation -
Now bursting off the arm
To settle down at speed
In two neat rows

The first sectional is fast - 27.6 seconds
And they are going like last weeks pay out there!
Back markers get busy and the field has already
Covered 600 yards

The driver in front plays on the reins
In an attempt to slow down the field
Only to hear a three wide train -
All flashing silks and thundering hooves
Now rushing around his outside

Eight hundred meters are gone
And the're already three wide-
Has the favorite gone all too soon?
At six to four on she makes a bid for the top
Only to land in the breeze

Another fast split 29.2 seconds
(Only slightly slower again)
They burst past the post
And out rings the bell-
Another fast lap now to come

At the burst of the bell
Horses quicken their feet
And drivers lean back in their gigs

Number one she still leads
Flashing silks gold and green -
Will she be an Emerald City girl tonight?

The driver leans back harder
To slow down the field
And succeeds in a 30.9 second split

The mare gets a breather -
But now they come faster
Rushing three
And now four horses wide

The home turn approaches
And they all fan out
To each get a shot at the post
The crowds on its feet screaming and cheering
For the tough little mare to get beat

The favorites now gone
(Loud swearing beside me)
But still the game mare just hangs on
They flash past the post
And I can see now shes lasted
To get up at forty to one!

BETHY BOO

SHE"S BETHY; SHE"S BETHY BOO; ALTHOUGH SHE"S TAILESS; SHE"LL WAG FOR YOU! SHE"S FRESH AS THE MORNING DEW; I LOVE MY BETHY; AND YOU WILL TOO! SHE"S ALL BLACK, WITH SUCH A SMILE; TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF HER; YOU"LL WALK A MILE! I"VE BEEN DOWN AND ALMOST OUT; BUT WHEN I THINK OF HER; I GAIN SUCH CLOUT! I"M SURE WE WILL MEET AGAIN; AND LIFE WITH BETHY; WILL NEVER END!

Or is life a giant mobius, winding toward the cent

yet in the cellar my pet still swelters

And before I know it, I have fallen into the cloudy yesterdays of mt mind.

Or is life a giant mobius, winding toward the center.

Dedication: For My Horse Rebel

I look into my horse's eyes -
A deep pool there that holds no lies;
An honest glance without conceit
As he stands tall on all four feet.

From your liquid lambent eyes
Your equine soul now me espies
And I could never do you wrong -
I can only praise you in this song.

You'll take quick flight - if alarmed -
Speed animates your vital form;
Though when your still as a calm lake -
In mutual trust we both partake.

Rebel my beautiful standard bred
Your chestnut all from tail to head
On the trot track you once did race
And with stamina could quick miles pace.

You were still strong years after racing
Though now you trot instead of pacing
Adapting as a saddle horse
You did train on - no need for force.

You quietly did as you were bidden
First in the gig, and then when ridden
You learnt to trot and canter freely -
And then to jump most gracefully.

In your strong body not one bad bone
At Richmond Farm you found a home -
To there live out your life complete
To my sweet horse Rebel - Rest In Peace.

Cow Preacher

I say to you my fellow bovine
My hoofed friends
We must be thankful for the grass in the valley
We must be thankful for the calves born each spring
Ours is a simple life
A life of mooing
A life of eating grass for hours on end
And that's about it

Storm

Storm - finest horse - you're faster than the wind -
Beautiful bay - all muscle, form, power, grace -
Gentle eyes shining - bright with boldness - kind -
And smooth and true in all of your four gaits.
Full standing - sixteen hands - with soft white blaze;-
Twelve years old - and still with power - to amaze.

Taken from the racetrack - lucky gelding -
(Seeing you had a quiet temperament)
You quickly took to riding school - excelling -
In your next life - almost like a retirement.
Not asked to do too much - except short rides;-
There's pasture here - hard feed - and treats besides.

When young and on the track, you proved your mettle -
Fleet-footed - with hot courage - in each race -
When thoroughbreds - they settle'd down to battle -
More times than not - you'd finish in a place.
Now years on - in silhouette - your grace defines;-
Equine beauty - I see in noble bloodlines.

In verse, I now pay homage to your spirit -
And in your health I take a great delight;
The time that you have left - you're free to live it -
You've a paddock and a stable for the night.
In these pastures - live your life out - Storm proud steed; -
For it's here that you have everything you need.

The Black Galgo (Spanish Greyhound)

I am just a black Galgo, nothing much to see
But really there is so much more, for you to see in me
I cannot help my colour, Nor can I help my breed
But I am a black Galgo, and desperately in need
People like the brindle, or the plain or the tan
But I am black, I can't change that, if only someone can
Why can't you see through the black and see my aching heart
Why can't you see the the love in me, it goes right off the chart
But black is black and we are shunned, our fate is to wait to die
We're forgotten, we're scared and invisible, please give us a try
Black is beautiful so they say, so why are we still here
We are beautiful dogs with beautiful hearts, so let us melt your fear
Open up your own hearts, please open up your mind and see
That black really is beautiful, and beautiful and black is me
