Work List of Hired On

I started in the years 2007 and 2013 as they had a massive layoff one week before Christmas that year. I left at 13.45, and returned in 2013 starting out at 9.50. I have gone up from there quite a bit. The only problem is that someone starting can make what it took me 12 years to achieve in just their first raise. Not very fair, but I am sure it is like this other places too.

About this poem:
I made a list back in 2015 and 2017, though I couldn't find the data. I am pretty sure the totals have lost a lot from those years as the turnover rate here is very high. We had over 300 come and go in 2007, and another 500 come and go in 2015. I figure over 5000 people have come and gone since 2007.

It's Hot Hot Hot!

Soaked in sweat
My head feels like it has been boiled like an egg
I have diarrhea
I don't care any more about this job
It is supposed to be better than this
You have air conditioning for the managers
But they don't want to share it with the workers
I wonder how the sweat shops across the world are doing in this weather
If you work for one of these places you are at the mercy of mother nature
When it is not June, July, or August, you do ok
But this is the time when you are tested
How much crap can I put up with?
But still I am glad I make more than Vietnamese workers
Who only make 2.50 dollars a day

wrapped hands

all I was given was strength
a dull and blunted tool
I stare out at beauty
with the clarity of a fool

all I was given was ferocity
a rulebook without rules
a limited life vocabulary
an outdated set of tools

all you were given was beauty
intelligence and grace
a heart to dry my soul and boat
my lighthouse is your face

all I was given was physicality
an afterthought, a whim
I struggle in the mighty seas
the great minds often swim

all you were given was a kindness
wrapped around a true
all I was given was brutality
it stops me from loving you

The Third Companion

With these hands
Through this heart
Beauty is fashioned
For folk at sea.

About this poem:
This was created 15 years ago for a personal website in order to make one-of-a-kind furniture and sculptural items for sale. There's an old saying that 'life is what happens when you're making other plans'. I went through the big "D", then shifted outta ON-Terrible to BC, then hence to NS these past 11 years.

Abandoned

You stand empty.
You stand silent.
Your windows broken.
Your machines scrapped.
Your workers gone.
The rails rusty,
The lots empty.
The lights off.
The smokestacks cold.
The gates locked.
The end reached.

Candy Cruiser

'69 Camaro
I'm working the block
candy cruiser
Glock under lock
these streets is hard
oil and cement
you gonna cross me
dog you better repent
red-haired and heels
she doing my deals
one tight b*tch
loyalty appeals
gonna branch out
get another city down
plan to franchise
I ain't no local clown
still I'm tiring of the game
tiring of the hate
500 G in the bank
to that I can relate
need a penthouse in the country
need some mountain air
the champagne sipping redhead
won't wait another year

walrus

a white cloud of teeth
approaches
looks..
and reconsiders

02:03
at the nightclub
a confrontation
I work the door

a struggle
we trade
I remove
the bigger man

he sees
his own blood
my squat silhouette
heavy goatee

"you are just
a psychotic walrus..! "
shouts he
from kerbside chamfered bivouac

guffaws
from staff
onlookers
bystanders

nickname..

The solace of a broken watermain

The day before yesterday the plumber came
to examine my drain
with the water running into it
day and night
he looked at me
I looked at him
its not coming from the pipes he said
it could be from under your concrete slab
or a broken pipe in your walls
either option sounded dreadful to me
I pictured mining under my house
or removing half my bathroom
I rang the insurance
$1,500 maximum cover
but he said dig down
beside the drain
and we will get a closer look
at that flow
call me back
Yesterday I dug
and there it was
the entry point for water
to my house
burst
miraculously
finding its way through the drain housing
and into the drain
plumber returned
easy fix
best Xmas present
a man could have
Merry Xmas all :)

People I've Worked With

There are so many who have come and gone through the years
Some were nice to be around, most were not
I'm super shy, so that sure doesn't help to foster a good time for me
I really wish I had gotten a job long ago where it was just me, myself, and I
But still I have the memories of these people, and that is something
The guy from Hardee's went golfing with me in 1988
The girl from Hardee's went out with me on a date
The girl from d*ck's got me, thank god she wasn't late
The teacher from Cassville made me a meal
The guy from Peru at the cheese plant in Belmont talked about potatoes with zeal
The young man from Fiji at the freezer plant in East Dubuque like my music a lot
The guy from South America at the muffler shop in Mineral Point was nice
The women at Chestnut in Galena were so pretty they would melt January ice
I could talk about the rest who weren't so well
But for now all I can say is...
They can just go to HELL!
