I agree, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility. Japan is an example of a nation which built its economy by copying, only to later become a leading technological innovator.
Class5: China, India, Indonesia & Vietnam have become great manufacturing nations, and as a result, have increased their respective economic power. However, it isn't a priori that these nations will become the next global superpowers. Furthermore, the GFC doesn't automatically mean western economies are a spent force. What we are experiencing is merely an example of the cyclic nature of economics, and a shift in focus. Australia has weathered the current crisis owing to its resource based exports, however, I can remember the 80's when unemployment was at 10% and interest rates peaked at 17.5%. We suffered while others hardly felt the economic turmoil. One of the reasons we avoided the worst of the GFC up to this point was the government's massive spending initiatives which stimulated the economy when it was beginning to slow as most others globally. Hence our huge deficit. Prior to the GFC, our budgets were in surplus. The negativity exhibited since the GFC is in no way inspiring the investor confidence required for recovery.
Well nobody has a crystal ball and can say for certain who will be the next superpower but in the thread people were asked their opinion. It seems to me a lot of people wanted the answer to be "There won't be a next superpower, America will reign forever" Childish really.
But with China lending money to the US and looking to get involved in the bonds market of leading Euro countries it is looking likely the two biggest economies in the world will soon be very indebted to China. And also with their economy grow at a very fast rate and the rest of the worlds major economies basically moving at a snails pace if forward at all it is likely they are only going to get even more economically powerfull.
They also have a population of 1 billion, a huge army, they are working on their navy fleet at the moment. It is more likely than not that the next superpower will be China. But who knows, maybe a sea of oil will be found under Ireland and it will be us. But considering our government has signed the rights for our natural resources away that will not even save us.

Really? Progress in technology in cars? No that was Germany.
Progress in household electronics? No that was Asia, maily South Korea and China.
The US has been at the forefront of IT progress yes, but not all technology progress.

And there we have it. You seem to believe that the stagnation will be perpetual and I don't. After all, China still needs a prosperous customer base, but having said that, I don't see its growing economic influence diminishing anytime soon.
Class5: And there we have it. You seem to believe that the stagnation will be perpetual and I don't. After all, China still needs a prosperous customer base, but having said that, I don't see its growing economic influence diminishing anytime soon.
It does need a prosperous customer base, and thats another reason for lending the money. But prosperous doesn't mean more powerfull.
I dont belive the big economies of the West will remail stagnant forever, they will recover. Burt when they do China will still be growing at a faster rate. China downgraded its economic growth this year to about 8% because of a worldwide slowdown. Thats 8% when it's downgraded! When the big western economies are recovered they wont grow at anyway near that pace.
Class5: I agree, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility. Japan is an example of a nation which built its economy by copying, only to later become a leading technological innovator.
except that Japan was never in the clutches of the type of Ideology China is! Their Imperial Dreams got cut kind of short! And when they had to restart they started on their right foot! China has been tribal and Collectivist even before the Communist Takeover, and nothing much has changed!
Class5: It was Japanese R & D, and Japanese companies that set up operations in South Korea and China, that led these innovations.
Im sure it was. I was just correcting the poster who said the US was behind most technology invention and break throughs in the past. Thats not correct. Asia was behind a large amount and the Germans were behind the technology we all use in our cars now.

No, the western economies will probably experience 3-4% growth as is the norm. China will continue to grow, but that will plateau eventually and come down to a lower figure, of course. I don't feel 'power' has been defined adequately in this thread. Are we talking economic? Military? Diplomatic? All of the above? If so, I see the need for a shift in China's political ideology and domestic policy before any real 'power' can be exercised.

ever heard of the Transistor,LASER,etc? Look where it was developed! Then crow again!
terbear57: True Class5 How many years did Japan need to get where they are
Fom the massive US investment at the end of WWII, to the late 70's and into the 80's. Then manufacturing left Japan and moved to Taiwan, China & Sth. Korea. However, Japan led (and still does) the R & D.
Conrad73: ever heard of the Transistor,LASER,etc? Look where it was developed! Then crow again!
What are you talking about??? You make a stupid statement then go away. Thats not debating.
The poster said the US was behind most technology progress in the past. This is wring, total bull! I did not say they were not behind any! I said they were not behind MOST! Asia and Germany were behind a lot as were many other countries. Now go away rolleyes:

Yes, Japan mimicked the west and found its prosperity there. China will undergo change too when the Old Guard passes away and the nation embraces Capitalism even moreso than now. Furthermore, I think China will trouble finding 'true' friends if it doesn't alter its human rights record. It's one thing to 'buy' friends; it's another to earn loyalty.

still not been clued in,have you? Look it up! Look where most of the fundamental discoveries were made! Look who produced the First Transistor, and look who produced the first LASER! Bell Laboratories might RING a Bell! And that's just a couple examples! Besides,I wouldn't think of stealing your Trademark!

I think we are talking all of the above as superpower is the most or one of the most powerfull countries on the planet. You need all of the above for that.
And at the moment China is playing the game better than anyone. They are using their economic power to "make friends" or at least make sure enemies owe them! They have a huge army and are working on their military. It all points to them only getting stronger.
And one could argue there has been a shift in Chinas political ideology . It has basically embraced capitalism in all but name. The economy of China now would have been unthinkable to Chinese Communist regiemes of the past.
Do you not think there will be a new superpower? Do you think The US will reign forever?

So what? That doesn't mean the US is behind most technology invented! The Chinese invented gun powder...are they behind most military invention now?
The Germans invented the rocket to reach space...Do we put them down as the people behind all space technolgy???
Unlike the US ones that Iranians force-landed to shame!
you mean the Drone that went down in Afghanistan and then was transported to Iran! Besides,it was the wrong color! Small wonder since you have to take the wings off to transport it over those mountainous terrains! But you wouldn't know anything about that!

I won't deny that it will be one of the most influential economies for the near future, but India isn't far behind and eventually, I feel Russia will become strong again. When the standard of living rises in China and India owing to the new prosperity, those companies will look to Africa as a source of cheap labour, and the cycle will go on....
The dichotomy of Capitalist Communism won't be lost on the future generations of Chinese, and Marxism will ultimately fall by the wayside as an irrelevance. If China embraces democracy and addresses its poor human rights record, we could see something truly amazing.

Where India lack something is they don't have the bigger western economies in their pocket like China. And as China get richer and the middle class grows rtheir internal market will only grow too. I agree India will be a force too but they are just falling behind at the moment.
The current regeime and politics wont last forever in China and it will embrace capitalism and democracy fully in the future but I think it will be many years away. When the Soviet Union was a superpower in the past it had a terrible human rights record and democracy was not on the horizon, but it was still a superpower.

except the way the y been going is more like Retrogression, instead of Progress! Having to oust that official didn't help to bring in a China-Spring soon, unless the People get really pissed of at the Ruling Clique! But Tienanmen Square showed just how far things like that go in China! Or Protests in Tibet or the Muslim Provinces! The Party is and will be ruling with an Iron Fist to preserve the privileges of the Army and Polit-Bureau!

actually Ziolkovski was before the Germans, and an American,Goddard, launched the first Liquid Fueled Rocket!
