sofarsogood74: China doesn't have the ability to project power????? Really???? The US owes China hundreds of Billions and now they are also in talk to buy European bonds. The two most powerfull economies in the West will owe China trillions between them and you say they don't have the ability to project power????

And can I just add a footnote for everyone....Wiki is not fact on matters like this!....Wiki can be wrong....Wiki is put up there by normal folk living at home!.......Wiki is peoples opinions more often that not on these matters and we all know opinions are not fact. Why do people keep going to wiki for info instead of just putting across their point of view!

Well said. Totally agree with you. Some people here are just blind, they can't accept the fact that China has held US Debt to trillions more than the annual GDP the US make.

sofarsogood74: You can't because culture means different things to different people. I don't think any country has the right to think it is superior to another. But the fact is some countries weild more power in the world than others.

I know, that is all obvious, but you said:

"I know that China are superior economically, culturally, in population size and perhaps mentally."

Hence my question.

Class5: How does one determine whether a country is 'culturally superior' to another?

When you become a culturally superior person you will understand!either that or its the fact most governments and organised religions in the west have succesfully brainwashed their citizens into holding the view that their country or sect is the real truth and that everthing else just happens to be "wrong" and a major threat to their security, wellbeing etc,and needs to be destroyed to safeguard the "truth" and "goodness" of its people,in turn playing everyone against each other as every side holds the same view.

Actual TRUTH never seeks to convert anybody, its safe and secure in its self and can be questioned inside out to prove itself as truth if needs be.it always waiting to be found, hidden in plain sight. The real question is will the insecure ego in conditioned masses allow itself to see this, dissolving the current western "normal" mindset(social conditioned unproven beliefs, views and thoughts which folks run with as "truth" but always yeild negative results for them and they can't figure out why) but yet in order for mankind to bulid a better world for ourselves and our neighbours we have to let this brainwashed western mindset go to create a new normality benfiting everyone.heres a tip..we can't have it both ways.

It definitely wont be. The population isn't big enough and a GDP of 1.6 trillion USD is not even in the top 10 world economies. But the rest of the world could learn a thing or two from Australia on how to run its economy. thumbs up

Yeah thats why Australia can run it's economy because of the population. But hey in the last 3-5 years our pop has gone from 22-23 million and by Aussie standards that is a big jump. Sign of things to come I'm afraid especially since the pollies need more tax payers to help fund the high pop of older australians.

Well the finance sector is not the be all and end all and either is the propert sector which makes it less likely to suffer from the boom and bust cycles of other economies. The service sector is the main stay of the economy. It doesn't rely on gambling bankers and property developers to drive its economy!

The economy also exports more than it imports and it exports a lot to China, Japan and South Korea which are very strong economies. It only exports about 4% to the US. It only has a deficit of about 20 billion USD and thats with a GDP of 1.6 trillion USD.

Boom and bust cycles are not necessarily tied to finance and property sectors. Boom/Bust cycles are just short run deviations from long run trends in an economy. Many things can exacerbate these short run fluctuations. In Ireland's case it was a property bubble.
Ireland has a massive trade surplus. I'm not sure of the figures but we imported 40-50 bilion last year while exporting 80-90 billion.
What is the big difference between exporting to China, South Korea and Japan than exporting to the United States. Yes they are strong economies. But the United States is bigger than all three put together. Still doesn't make a difference though.
What's this deficit of 20billion?? Not sure what you mean by that!

I think you will also find that financial services are usually under the umbrella of the services sector and the service sector in the United States accounts for 60-70% of the economy!

I know it is. But it only accounts for about 10% of the Oz economy. It is not as important is in Ireland. Irelands economy was built on property and finance and thats why it fell apart! Hence we could lean from Australia. The way you are banging on you would think Ireland was in a great position and Australia in a bad one. Where are Irish people emigrating to????? Do I have to spell out every last thing we could learn from their economy??? Ot maybe you just think ours has run and is running perfectly!!!!roll eyes

With zero aircraft carriers they sure don't. The criteria for power projection was not economic as that is economic power. My quote for power projection reads ""project power on a worldwide scale to protect those interests.""

I see. Then the guy who coined the term 'Superpower' is wrong. It only means what you want it to mean even though he defined it.

Did you know that sometime anonymous posters on an internet forum who only state their opinion without any backing at all are often mistaken?

So far, I have provided the only definition of what is a Superpower. Since you do not approve, what is yours?

One of the most popular dinner party conversation topics is the possibility that the United States will be joined or even surpassed as a superpower by another nation, such as China. a vast land area, and over four times the population of the US, so it should catch up easily, right
A genuine superpower does not merely have military and political influence, but also must be at the top of the economic, scientific, and cultural pyramids. Thus, the Soviet Union was only a partial superpower, To match the US by 2030, China would have to :

1) Have an economy near the size of the US economy. If the US grows by 3.5% a year for the next 25 years, it will be $30 trillion in 2006 dollars by then. Note that this is a modest assumption for the US, given the accelerating nature of economic growth, but also note that world GDP only grows about 4% a year, and this might at most be 5% a year by 2030. China, with an economy of $2.2 trillion in nominal (not PPP) terms, would have to grow at 12% a year for the next 25 years straight to achieve the same size, which is already faster than its current 9-10% rate, if even that can be sustained for so long (no country, let alone a large one, has grown at more than 8% over such a long period). In other words, the progress that the US economy would make from 1945 to 2030 (85 years) would have to be achieved by China in just the 25 years from 2005 to 2030. Even then, this is just the total GDP, not per capita GDP, which would still be merely a fourth of America's.
Have major universities that are household names, that many of the worlds top students aspire to attend. 17 of the world's top 20 universities are in the US. Until top students in Europe, India, and even the US are filling out an application for a Chinese university alongside those of Harvard, Stanford, MIT, or Cambridge, China is not going to match the US in the knowledge economy. This also represents the obstacles China has to overcome to successfully conduct impactful scientific research.

5) Attract the best and brightest to immigrate into China, where they can expect to live a good life in Chinese society. The US effectively receives a subsidy of $100 to $200 billion a year, as people educated at the expense of another nation immigrate here and promptly participate in the workforce.

In my opinion a superpower didn't mean the only one superpower.

China is a superpower now, so the next superpower could be one of the other options. India grows slowly, Brazil has a high economic growth but it will not be a superpower, Britain probably is (depending on what you think is a superpower) and others are not, let alone Iran or Korea, especially if you are referring to North Korea (which has nuclear weapons but nothing else).

China is the next world power. All evidence indicate this nation is moving ahead to take its world position as a respected and admired nation on world stage. Congratulation to the Chinese for their hard work and determination to achieve the status of s super power.
