I've been charged for water before, but not usually when buying a dinner or lunch. Wait staff has deteriorated over the past three decades, if you ask me. Snotty attitudes, impatience. I was yelled at in a downtown (Portland) café. I walked out. Another time, I had stopped at a country-restaurant and, seeing the chips on the picture above the counter, I ordered that sandwich. When it arrived, I asked for the chips. The waitress snarled at me, "It doesn't SAY it comes with chips, now DOES it??" Customer service is at an all time low. You should not be charged for water, in the case you mentioned. I would have said something. Like, "That is so petty. I'll never do business here", and NOT leave a tip. Perhaps some may think it's unfair to do this to a wait person, but he or she is the front runner, and if you start there, you may get somewhere. They will complain to their manager, and perhaps change it. I have no problem with withholding the tip. The waiter represents the outfit, and it is the way to get the point across.
I believe it's illegal for a restaurant to charge for tap water in Britain. And rightly so. However I don't see how anybody is entitled to free orange.

I'm thinking it was the dash of orange, too. Still, seems a little petty, since he did order a meal, as well. As they say, no free lunch....
Goodness me man that's expensive in France they still charge 0,50 centes. Mostly in Chinese resto's. Its not included in ( eat as much as you want service ).

galtee: Water Where is it going to end??
In Australia water is free and at a lot of venues if you're the "designated driver" for a group of friends drinking, they give you a wrist band and you get free water and coke, lemonade etc, It's an initiative to help cut drink driving and associated accidents.

Um... is this a thread about water, because you there in Ireland are protesting your water costs...
I saw it all on our news...
Yes, you need to pay for your water, because, its not the water itself, someone has to be paid for the time they take to give you that glass and wash it afterwards... ??
Not going to end... Next, rent-a-table or booth at the restaurant and perhaps a tax at the drive-thru for us even being on the restaurant premises: Property Tax... $$$ $$$$$$ $$$.

No... that is your tip tax... surely they wont tax you more...
anyway, we are being charged a tax for almost everything, so no surprises anywhere...

Howdy Miss, the price here for a BigMac & Quarter pounder at McDonald's: Is $8.00 - Can buy 24oz (680Grams) of pork roast for the same price. Not only was I blessed from my grandmother teaching me how to cook many years ago, but these days, I would starve if I didn't know how to cook.

That is expensive, $8 wow... I thought takeaway food in your country would be cheaper..
To be honest, I don't know what it costs for a BigMac here, as I have never had one...
I think you are well lucky to have had a lovely grandmother to teach you... and yes, it is cheaper to cook than buy out... if you know how...
But for me, It is a time thing, and so I tend to eat raw stuff.. (not meat of course) fruit, nuts and stuff like that... because I cannot be fussed with cooking... but occasionally, yes, I like to cook..

Very few variables are affordable with the major brands in America. Just searched the U.S. national average for a BigMac: $4.80 before tax and Quarter pounder: $3.79 before tax: As of July, 2014... Yes, thank you. My grandmother was the old school type. She was raised on a farm. As a child, I witnessed my Uncle in the back yard killing a chicken that we ate for dinner, well I lost my appetite, I didn't eat that night. Was only visiting one of my Uncles that day. I was born and raised in the city and before that chicken killing, I had only known road-kill, killing.
But you didn t ask for just tap water! Personaly there would be a 90% chance that i wouldnt charge(there are variations) but its their right to do so.How you react to it , depends how you se it
ellimere: plenty places charge for cordial. if you had gotten plain tap water there may not have been a charge.
You haven't been to France then. Here they do charge you ,mostly in chinese restaurants and I know lots of restos that they charge you for a simple jar of water. The only place that they don't charge is in bars where with your coffee you can ask a glass of water and that's with a big huge S.V.P ( s'il vous plait ).

If you were in Miami - you would have been charged first for parking in their parking lot, walk in and pay a cover charge..... and then pay for a drink of water..... what's this business about a dash of orange?
crayons: first time you saw that did ya think it as your last supper
At that time, I knew the chicken wouldn't have another supper... I was starving by breakfast and didn't hesitate to eat the scrambled eggs that were brought in the house from the chicken house that was outback, saw my Aunt wash the chicken poo off of the eggs before breaking the shells to cook them. Was twenty five miles from town, hunger pains set-in, it was during the winter, no fresh fruit, half of the food was somewhere roaming around in the yard. Not a fun visit.
