postneoludite: We could do US rip-offs of British comedies: Three's Company from Man About The House. The Office from The Office The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer from The Benny Hill Show
What else...?
Have to say I prefer the British 'The Office'. But Steve Carell is good too. Haven't seen The Situation Room but The Benny Hill show was a giggle, all that fast forward running and his expressions.
To me the best comedy show on American TV right now is Big Bang Theory. Before that I was really into the Simpsons. Before that it was Married with Children and going further back it was All in the Family. I never cared for 2.5 men and I love Lucy was mostly slapstick IMO. Jack Benny, Milton Berle, and Rodney Dangerfield, are probably the 3 funniest men to ever appear on TV. Who else besides Jack Benny can crack up an audience just by looking at the camera. When Milton Berle comes out on stage in drag he brings the house down.

serene56: American comedy seems to appeal mostly to Americans With the exception of Seinfield which was universal and outstanding.
I heard they tested Seinfeld translated in Germany and it totally flopped. The Golden Girls went over well. Sometimes I wonder whether the success depends on the quality of the translation and that is very difficult with humor. I think the people "get" the humor, they just don't think it's funny. I wonder how translated versions did in other non-English speaking countries.
I had been a NYC taxi driver before the industry completely changed in 1976, so there were a lot of things in this show I could identify with. Yeah, we had some dispatchers like that.
I truly appreciated the characters of Lotka and Simka as I knew some like that too.

That's cool Ken. I bet you had quite a few characters in your cab too!
steve74: The Crosby Show Different Strokes Steptoe and Son Threes Company Night Court Married with children Father Ted
Oh yeah forgot Different Strokes... what you talkin' 'bout Willis! Father Ted is not American. Irish writer, British TV company (Channel 4) Neither is Steptoe and Son (BBC I think), but both brilliant! Especially Father Ted. "these cows are small, those cows are far away!"

*I have the tee-shirt, honestly*.....and steptoe, yes, bbc....written by the legendary johnny speight...
minnieme2: I think I did this before but what the hell.
From that list? Scrubs, tho I have great difficulty working out which one is the funny guy. To be honest I find most American comedy to be dishwater apart from the cartoons and some of the films. Frasier was not bad.
well, it 's been years, couple decades since I have watched regular TV, but I have caught up with some of the comedy series recently with streaming. Comedies that I liked best were I Dream of Jeannie, Friends, and That 70s Show. I also thought Hogan Heroes was one of the best.

Personally i don't think there has been a decent American comedy series since the 1960s (at least i can't think of any memorable ones off hand). I am thinking of classics like "The Adam's Family, I Dream Of Jeanie, Bewitched, The Munsters and Hogan's Heroes" etc...Since then the comedy has been pretty predictable and drab with too much annoying canned laughter for my liking. And in any case, since the classic 60s era, British comedies have taken over as being the best going with countless brilliantly funny shows ... and remain the best to this day i firmly believe.
Penny! Penny! Penny! Love Sheldon. But they're all funny in their own way.
singleguy, I have to agree with you there, the early comedies were better but wouldn't go back as far as the '60s for good ones. Taxi and Cheers were good. Even Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
