With so much, divide and conquer in the world, within each country or region, over races, religion, sexes, cultures, clans, politics, ideologies... What does "Patriotism" mean to you? Does it matter at all? Were you taught civics? Is it still being taught?
Patriotism is the roots of a tree, it bonds you to the land and braces you against all elements. If I need strength to take bad on I look back to where I came from. Patriotism means you're not a member of the now generation.
"Patriotism is the ideology of attachment to a homeland. This attachment can be a combination of many different features relating to one's own homeland, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects."
Origin late 16th century (in the late Latin sense): from French patriote, from late Latin patriota ‘fellow countryman’, from Greek patriotes, from patrios ‘of one's fathers’, from patris ‘fatherland"

Waving the flag is optional in fact I'm rather suspicious of flag-waving from the now generation. Wafting that bit of cloth about is what many people do in lieu of real patriotism and I don't wish to be associated with that.

Virtue-signalling for right-wingers, that's what flag-waving is.
You dont have to wave the flag, you dont even have to own a flag, but you should respect the flag of your country. Or move to a country with a flag you like better.
Makes my blood boil seeing foreigners burning our flag in my country, they should be immediately cut off welfare and sent packing.
I'm sorry, but I HAVE to disagree with most of the things I've read, here.
We've reached a point in human history where we CAN destroy ourselves and EVERYTHING, with the push of a button! It NO LONGER MATTERS what country you live in, what race you are, what religion you follow, etc.
PERSONALLY, I'm a "patriot" of/to humanity's future! When you focus on the divisions, you divide yourself. And mankind can NO LONGER afford that stupidity! Now, I'm NOT saying we should forget our differences! They're great! And we SHOULD strive to maintain our diversity. But we NEED to change our FOCUS from our differences, to our similarities! We ALL have the SAME basic wants and needs. We ALL NEED food, shelter, protection, clean water, a world that will support us, etc. We ALL WANT to love and be loved, important and enjoyable work, safety, decent conditions of life, the best for our children, etc, It DOESN'T MATTER if I'm from Timbuktu, or outer Mongolia. Boston, or Singapore. Red, white, black, yellow, or purple with pink polka dots! Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Taoist, Hindu, ANIMIST! There IS NOTHING WRONG, with ANY of those things! BUT, IF we continue to give our allegiance to such small divisions, we'll ALWAYS be divided! And we'll NEVER achieve humanity's potential! While it's great to BE different, and share those differences with each other, our PRIMARY ALLEGIANCE MUST BECOME TO HUMANITY, as a WHOLE! NOT it's individual parts! Either we survive, together, or we die, individually. JMO
