When I was young I would have chores to do on a weekly basis. My parents paid me, but I was taught immediately and automatically had to be saved separate. It taught me how to manage/spend my money.
Other people do not agree that the kids should be paid for them doing chores. Not everyone has the same opinions on this.
Kids are going to get pocket money either way, so they might as well be paid for doing chores. I had my first savings account opened for me at 10 and I was encouraged to save regularly. I still have the same account and still use it.
I didn't pay my daughter for doing chores. What I did was teach her how to save money.
She worked in the high school library. Her paycheck varied each week depending on how many hours she work. We opened a savings account at a bank within walking distance from the school. She had to save half of the check in the savings account. The other half of the check she had to give me a percentage of it that I used for either food, trips to the Jersey shore, girl scout uniform, etc. The other half was all hers to spend however she wanted.
With that training she learned how to save money and bought her first house when she had a full time job. Then she paid cash for her first car. She is extremely frugal to this day.

I never received 'pocket money' I was still required to do chores, pitch in with what ever needed to be done at home... It was never even thought of to get 'paid' to do every day tasks.. It is what a family does. Bedrooms were kept tidy etc... by us kids. Sat morning was always cleaning day.. vacuuming, washing floors.. etc etc...
Things were purchased as we "needed".. if there were any clothes that I wanted my mother would purchase the fabric and I learned to make them myself...
At 15 I started to work a couple of days after school and Saturday morning, at a chocolate store.
My two boys, also, were required to help out in the house.. clean their rooms etc...it was just something everyone just 'did' .... However, when they turned 8 they were given a weekly allowance - depending on their age (i.e. 8 yr old = $8 10 yr old =$10 and so forth) it was their money to do what ever they wanted.
I don't know.. if I was right or wrong... Oh well whatever, they are both saving to buy their first house..
Earning money and learning how to save and/or give to charity. It took me to spend my money wisely, as such things I wanted cost a different amount of money.
It taught me responsibility.
I went on about 12 years old to rake the leaves from my neighbors in in the Autumn to earn money. I began to climb the ladder to a future of employment, saving, and spending.
We were just beaten or grounded for not doing chores. For money we had petty jobs and fraud but in my defence they wouldn’t have employed the 10 year old me without those endearing lies.

When I was about 10 my mother gave me 25 cents a week. That's about what it cost to go to a movie. By 13 I'd been going to church every Sunday and putting about 45 cents in the basket when it was passed down the isle twice. One Sunday I was standing in front of the church looking at the huge solid wood doors thinking about the 45 cents in my pocket. I could go to the movies with that money and also buy candy. I figured I needed that money a lot more than they did so I made a left turn and walked to the movie theater and never went back to church again.

my son understood that he did tasks around the house because he was part of a family, working together. Having said that if he wanted some money for something (within reason) he received it. Again, because he was part of the family. But I think our situation is a bit different in that he grew up spending a lot of time at his uncle’s hotel, and worked there as well.
i’m very lucky... At an early age, my brother started giving my son $ for every business, biography or suggested book he read and could discuss. The amount depended on the book. To this day my son is a voracious reader.....grin

That's cool. I like that. I didn't pay my daughter to read but I encouraged it knowing she would need it for college exams.

Here's a 35 year old Princeton graduate who was getting a $1,000.00 WEEKLY allowance from his father. His father reduced the allowance to $300.00 a week. The son didn't like that.
And what did the son do. He shot his father at close range killing him instantly. The mother asked the court to go easy on her son. Hmmmm, what does that tell you about this family.
So now the son who had a Princeton education is now going to spend 30 years in prison.
He honestly believed that he was entitled to that $1,000 a week and wasn't going to let daddy take it away from him.
Now instead of eating top of the line food, wearing designer clothes and driving a fancy car he will be eating prison food while his pockets are empty.
Yes, we need financial/work ethic discipline taught at home. But equally important, how about teaching schoolkids money/budgeting management at school!!!???...instead of Algebra and Geometry, both of which I have never used since the age of 18.
