I've never had a smartphone, don't want one... and don't need one... The last real phone call I got was 9 years ago, when mom was still alive. I have a flip phone that Iast year I used for 5 minutes, it sits on my front seat, for emergencies...
I enjoy time away from things like that, I don't need a computer attached to my hip...
... Could I live a day without a smartphone? ... ... maybe ...

good boy, and condoleances on your mother. My father past away 2 years ago, my mother is still alive, aldow it was critic for one year back. I guess becoming an orphan gives me some kind of freedom, but I also think it will leave me confused.

I remember when you posted about your father passing away, I don't know you, but I've been meaning to tell you... Do you spend time with you mother? you lost your dad, but she lost her husband... is she doing ok? the older she gets, she will need your help more and more, you seem like a good guy Peka, I hope you spend time with her, enjoy her while she's here...
Had you asked if I could live without a celllphone, I'd have had a problem--that would've been maybe. The problem being that there are no pay phones anymore so going for a drive would be a hazard. Given the inept design of the keyboard, the computer applications on my smartphone are less important--read hardly every used.

At the moment, I do not have a cell phone. Many years ago I did have a pre paid Tracfone my father bought me. When he bought it the package only showed the screen of the phone. He did not realize or read the package that it was a Susan G. Komen breast cancer phone that was pink. Nor did he realize that it cost $10 more as a donation to breast cancer awareness. I still have the phone but it has not been activated for a while. My Father died over 5 years ago and my Mother died almost a year ago at the end of this month. When I lived in Colorado, I had a black Tracfone that was a telephone only no texting or internet. When I moved to Florida that phone was obsolete.
I Lived without one most of My life, I remember the Nickel Pay phones, Lol, then they raised that to a Dime, then a Quarter, Then when Cell Phones came out, they became almost a thing of the past...
My Son bought me an LG phone, the are very reasonable, and very reasonable Monthly rate, and it does about Everything..You can talk to it, it will talk back to you..So No More Lonely Nights...
I have an AT&T iPhone and I don't like it. My daughter got a deal on it cause she wanted to be able to text me instead of a phone call. She has long thin fingers and will text indefinitely. I have short fingers so I can't do the fast texting that she does. To me texting should be 10 words or less. If you have more to say then that pick up the phone and call or send me an email. I'm still trying to get used to using voicemail on the darn thing.
A few days ago I had dental surgery and the dentist called me at night to see how I was doing. But it wasn't a phone call. He dictated into his phone which then converted it into a text that looked like this jjkkee93mmd;mmmd. I had no idea what he was saying except for a few words inbetween the gobbly gook.
I still have my old flip phone that was much easier to use.
What do I prefer? I prefer the landline phone that hangs on the kitchen wall or sits on your desk.
Of course, I can survive without a smart phone for longer, than a day. But life is more convenient with one.
It happens that I go night paddling in order to see bioluminescence. And by definition, I return from that paddling very late, often alone on the ferry and then for ca 50 km alone on the road through forest. If something happens - like a collision with a row deer or and elk - it'd be handy to be able to call for help and tell to road assistance my location on this planet. And then sit and read a book or a newspaper or my feed on FB or clean my photos or the like, while waiting. Given, I'm still alive :)

Easy cause don't have one and never will. I use my landline. Carry a pre-paid burner flip phone for emergencies. Better than a life line. And cheaper. I hate texting. Especially to someone with a smartphone. Replying.......you have mail...argh...still replying...you have mail...ENOUGH already. I am trying to pick out letters, can't you give me a chance! The only use I see for cell phones is in the woods or on the road. Try and find a payphone on the interstate when your car breaks down. I am not big on phone talking anyway. I feel guilty..mom was alone and used to call me 6 times a day..are you watching PBS, NO mom, I was on the roof. Came running down when outside bell went off. Wish now she could call me. Wish I had giving her more of my time. Life sucks.
But am finding my online usage has increased in he last few months
During the week I had an appointment which took 2 hours my phone was on silent When I checked my phone I had 5 WhatsApp messages 2 missed calls 1 text message None of there were urgent
I honestly hadn’t realised how much time my phone takes up in my day till this happened I’m going to start turning my phone off for a few hours each day and try cut back on my online usage

Thanx, you have a good memory, my father passed away 2 years and 2 months ago. My mom is doing fine, allthough she almost died last year. In the neighbourhood of my mother lives a guy of almost 97 years old, who lost his wife 2 months after my father died. He and my mother are born in the same village and lived there during worldwar 2. Soon after his wife died he and my mom became good friends and my mom is staying over at his house every weekend. He lives about 500 meters from where my mother lives. Of course I visit her regularly.

I have no smartphone either, only a simple cellphone. I have no other phone anymore, and my cellphone is important for my job as a chessteacher. I need to call the schools if I am late, because a flat tire or something, parents need to call me when their child is ill. And I regularly call my mom of course.
During the first weeks of corona we (my mom and I called everyday, but at a moment I started to hate the phone, even calling an aunt took some courage, so I waited a few days, and then it was her birthday, so I had to call. Normally through the year I call 2-3 times a week with people, most I do on the internet, facebook messenger or email.
