Track16: I couldn't imagine not having any animals. Sure the place wouldn't look like a train wreck but it would be soul less. They bring life to the house, If for some reason all my animals were suddenly took away, I really have no idea how I would cope. I don't have any children and at this point in my life, I don't plan on having any so the animals are the closest thing I'll ever have to having kids. I know its not quite the same but its kinda the same when you are a animal person.
Didi7: It's good that they were so helpful to you, especially during that crucial time. Sweetie keeps me going, even when I don't want to do anything else but mope;-)
Lot of days that the only smile I had was animal related. They support you in ways you don't even realize half the time.

A few years ago, I’ve been hospitalized. I shared a room with 3 other women and one of them had a cat, which we learned about from her phone conversations with her brother. The woman was single and had her brother come from another town to look after her cat while she was in the hospital.
The brother couldn’t stay long and couldn’t take the cat with him. And we heard the woman screaming into the phone: “Will you get her (the cat) executed only because I have to stay here (in the hospital) for a few days more? She’s young and healthy! It’s about a few more days!”
The female patients united with the nurses and found a temporary home for this cat. For a couple of weeks, it was understood. Meanwhile, the woman was deteriorating and she died within 4 days afterwards. I do not know what happened to the cat. A couple of weeks isn’t the same as taking over the responsibilities for someone’s animal.
Long story short: I gave myself a word that I am not going to get a cat as long as I don’t have a back-up. Right now I don’t. If I die, I’ll die without worrying for my cat’s fate.

There's a definite overlap between having kids and pets: you're responsible for another life, but also interact in on a symbiotic level. You know you're only going to share life with them for a season before they move on.
Certainly, my grandchildren have an element of viewing my granddogs like siblings. They're very much a part of team kid, rather than team parent.
One Christmas when my daughter was small and I was struggling for cash, I said I wasn't going to get anythng for the dogs that year. My daughter told me in no uncertain terms she wasn't going to open a single present unless the dogs had something, too. I had to miss a few meals over that bond.

Truly sorry about that. Your decision will probably save another cat from the same, I guess....
I have a cat with three legs and the mind of a dog. He's the low maintenance of a cat with the emotional support of a dog, really come into his own since he lost a leg.

So what does that make you CC? A cat person, a dog person or and animal person?

You left the choices rather unclear as to the source of one's personality; the Chinese astrological choices or simply the animal companions you prefer around you . For my astrology animal I am a Dog with characteristics that are basically 98 to 99% correct whereas I adore cats and have had them around and with me most of my life, but, I'd love to have a light brown poodle if I had the space...

Tulefell: Cats... :)
My only cat used to sit on the wardrobe and grunt at passers-by. Scared be-jeezus out of them.
The best cat in the world.
I had one in Munich that would sit on top of the old style European clothes wardrobes, peer over the top and make sounds like a hyena: She was mottled grey with orange specks on her fave and people would get unnerves by her sounds peering down at them.... Her proper name was Borodino; her nickname was Fiend laugh:
My cat sooty. She sit there looking at me. And meowwwes. Untill I let her sit on my lap. Her first job is to wash both my arms. Then gets up sits next to me and watches telly. then she meowwls at me once which means she's hungry. I.m sure she understands me.

She sit there looking at you trying to figure out what the hell she is looking at, poor cat

I've had horses, dogs and cats. My dogs and cats have all been adopted. I adopted my current cat when she was 2. She's now 22 and, although she has some age-related issues, she's still very active and chatty. She's a Siamese and has sapphire blue eyes. She's also very affectionate and at night likes to sleep in my arms with her head in the palm of my hand.

When I used to liven a farm in southern Maryland, we started out with 2 cats, They came with us on the plane to Munich for a year. When we returned it was 5 cats; the mother and father and 3 kittens with 2 others to a home of friends. Over the years, the 5 cats increased to 40. Of those 15 had the run of the old manor house while the rest took up residence in the old stables. They all had their names, nick names where also allocated and of course Tribal names so we kept track of which groups kittens usually came from. The suspected parents were usually rather monogamous...whereas milking mothers shared their milk with any kittens, some didn't. Feeding times spared them as t0 their residence...stables, main house as did their diets some preferred to catch field mice or gophers others got dry foods. When the vet came for visits, he also gave them their shots. One harsh winter I had 15 cats sleeping on my bed and the cold outside went to 50 below zero and the heating system had frozen and burst the water pipes...With a small heater at night we all slept fine until the weather warmed up. It was a hard cold winter for all of us.
