Juneau: I don't think there has ever been any way to prove whether Mallory made it to the summit or not.

"In 1999 a research expedition found the remains of George Mallory, a British explorer and mountaineer, who disappeared with ropemate Andrew Irvine in 1924. Experts have long debated whether it was possible that the pair had actually reached the summit before perishing. The find did not provide conclusive evidence. A service was performed for Mallory and his body left where it was"

Yes, the debate and even the conspiracy theories continue with this one. But I think, to truly be credited with a first accent,
you have to return safely also.

If he reached the summit he would no doubt have planted a flag.

Would Hillary and Tenzing have kept that little secret between them? Did Hunt know?

From what I have read, I can't really figure out the exact reason they are going to take the bodies away. It is actually a team of 20 Nepalese sherpas that are doing it, and I think they are only going to remove 5 of the bodies.

Juneau: Sorry,,, just read your post! That's what I thought! We are talking about the "death zone" ie. above 26,000 feet. There wouldn't be ANY wildlife up there.

This poll was originally meant to be a discussion about the retrieval of those who have died in the death zone of Everest, not really so much about the rubbish. I was just interested to see what people's opinions were. We all know about the massive problem with all the rubbish that people leave behind after expeditions, but the retrieval of the dead is the issue that I was hoping people would comment on, as it has never been done before.

It occurs to me that folks who are so keen on mountaineering would like nothing better than to be buried on the world's highest mountain in the event of their death. So I'd say, leave them where they are!

I doubt that. This is a Sherpa led expedition, joined
by people who's whole lives are 'adventure' they already
have their cause.

Analie: Was Mallory's body ever recovered from the mountain?

No one has considered bringing up remains from sunken ships, e.g. the Titanic. This is no different.

Juneau: A team of mountaineers are planning to retrieve the bodies of climbers who have lost their lives on Mount Everest. It is thought as many as 150 bodies are still on the mountainside, beyond the reach of recovery because of treacherous climbing conditions (in the so-called "death zone" - above 8,000m).

Do you agree that they should try and retrieve these people (and risk their own lives) or do you think that these climbers should be left to rest where they died?

It would be much smarter to wait a few years for global warming to reveal the bodies - then drag em down safely over dirt ..dunno

Well! If someone came to me and said,"I climbed to the top of Everest." My reply would be,"That was stupid!"

Leave the memorial of stupid alone! Maybe people will dare to climb the heights of decent behavior to one another instead.

If one is able to tame his tongue......then he will have done a great thing.

At that altitude and in that atmosphere the remains would
be comparatively well preserved.

There are only five bodies being recovered, many of the
remainder are completely buried under the snow. There is
one body at least that is in full view to all who venture
that way and I suspect one of the remains to be recovered.
The plan is to cremate the remains just below base camp.
But as I stated earlier, the true purpose of the exercise
is to clear the upper mountain of rubbish and discarded
equipment.

That is a crass and ridiculous thing to say.

Man is, and always will be intrepid. Thank goodness we have
men and women willing to push themselves to and beyond their
limit in the name of exploration and adventure.
Unlike yourself there are people out there with courage and
spirit. You just sit there behind your computer screen
pontificating and judging men and women who are of sterner
stuff and of greater character than yourself...imo.

What kind of world would it be without the brave and courageous?

Last night I was up until 1:30 and I woke at 3:30. why, to keep my store from flooding. I have done that for ten years and paid my mothers bills. I used to sit with and egg timer under my shirt and set it for ten minutes.......get up and empty buckets, run pump, etc......shop vac. wet floors, clean up the mess.....in summer and winter. I have done that for 16 days straight....rum home grab books and then sell and work. I have had my arms so numb I could not feel my hands, I could not lift them to turn out a lamp or feel the switch. I had to crawl into the back dooron my hands and knees a few times to boot for pain.
Bull! I'll stand up against anything for love.....but go up a damn mountian.....stupid. mumbling

If anything I have said is not true.....God punish me for it.

No, I can't agree.

Even ant hotels eventually get full and have to be replaced.

Can't replace Everest, so it will have to be cleaned off to make room for more stupids.

Again showing your ignorance.

Read up on Chris Bonnington or Edmund Hillary to see what
they have given back. Or as I mentioned before, Greg
Mortenson.

It's a very important part of the ethos of the climbing
fraternity to give back to the people of the area.
Many have done this more than you would imagine.

I have had the pleasure of dinner with Sir Chris Bonnington.
A fine man whose first consideration is for those around him.

Given back? Did they do it to give back after they made it rich. Not hardly! People may do good things and brave things after they do something stupid. Why did they climb the mountain.....because it was there. Well I have a well I know of.....do they what to jump down it and try to climb out......because it is there.....NO! Glory and money!!!!!!! Even with glory and money......what value does it have for mankind......money can be made from other things.........like finding a cure for cancer.....a higher goal I think!. Does one play russian rolette with a pistol to be brave and a hero........kinda stupid. Many things are a waste of effort other than self serving. To be the first to fly around the world in a balloon..........self serving......pointless! Find a way to feed the poor.....thats a heros path.

If the money made by them was not made by them.....it would have been spent and given to others by another.......But to go to the top of a mountain.....doesn't mean anymore than to be the only one to see a peanut from the shell before it is eaten.

Now if they had placed a machine up there to stop earthquakes....then great. But look at me!!!!!!!!rolling on the floor laughing

I have to agree to a certain extent. I can't see how they contribute to the betterment of mankind, and like most dare-devils who end up dead I cant feel any sympathy for them. Besides, what's the difference between climbing Everest compared to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th highest mountains? Ego?
All land and sea explorers were ego-driven but at least they achieved something worthwhile.
