RE: Humble

My experience? Anyone that has to 'advertise' their qualities like that, probably isn't. NEXT!

Only the Lonely

Itchy wave - yes, that's true. Most people, when they ask 'how are you today?' don't really want to hear the answer and why many people answer it with a 'fine' that's seldom even heard. crying

Only the Lonely

GG - that's really sad. Don't they have seniors groups and seniors outings? Our Parks and Recreation has outings for seniors every week. I know that's only one day out of 7, but who knows, maybe they'd meet someone they'd like to meet up with on other days.

Only the Lonely

GG - that is so incredibly sad about the old woman and her Teddy. Yes, I know many elderly people suffer from loneliness due to being cast aside by their families. It's hard when you've given up so much so your children can have a better life, and rather than honour their parents, they view them as an inconvenience.

There was a story the other day on a company in Denmark (I believe) that started by seeing an old man sitting by himself on a bench every day. The man that started the business cycled, so he bought a rickshaw for the front of his bike, and offered the old man a ride around town. The man was thrilled!

The next day, everyone in his building wanted a ride, so he enlisted other cyclists to help out. The seniors get to see something other than their rooms, and the cyclists get to do something positive for them.

It's a sad commentary on our society when getting old is a scourge and loneliness is viewed as a communicable disease. I do think we can choose to feel lonely or we can choose to keep ourselves busy. But for those whose lives and activities are restricted, they are too proud to ask for help and thus, end up isolated and extremely lonely. I don't understand why families don't see that, but maybe the parent is too proud to let them see.

I'm just glad there are people that care, and do whatever they can to assist.

Only the Lonely

Thanks for your comment, lindsy! Yes, as I mentioned in my blog, Imo, loneliness is chosen, much like happiness. I don't think that's abnormal, it's just how you deal with your emotions. thumbs up

Only the Lonely

Hey GG - thanks so much for pinch hitting for me. Yes, I was out picking up my new bike, went for a bike ride, got back in time to go to the executive meeting for photo club, went for coffee with them, then waited (successfully) for photos of the huge brewing tanks that were being trucked to the brewery until 3:00 am this morning.

Thank you to everyone who commented on how you deal with loneliness and/or depression. Some sad and raw stories and emotions here, and I appreciate that GG was able to respond on my behalf. Kudos to everyone for being brave enough to share.

Absolutely love it!! thumbs up

Only the Lonely

Jim - thanks for the vid! grin

Only the Lonely

Bearwoman - I totally understand that and think that can be very common. thumbs up

Only the Lonely

Lukeon - Thanks! I love seeing those old vids. He was such a brilliant singer - just love his music. thumbs up

Only the Lonely

GG - There's a lot of reasons one can feel lonely, and certainly having limited mobility and not being able to enjoy the things you used to, can lead to a less active social life. Less active, being both in the physical sense and in socializing in general.

I think lots of people feel lonely at times, GG - but it's how one copes with it that's important. What a lovely offer you've made! You're absolutely correct that feeling lonely is nothing to be ashamed of - and reaching out at those times and acknowledging it is important in order to move on. thumbs up

RE: if you had to choose -

I'd go for the say everything! lol. What's a little (or a lot) more trouble than what my mouth already gets me into? rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Africa Day

I have never heard of 'Africa Day' - and thanks for the education on not just the day, but some other facts as well!

thumbs up

How Does Your Garden Grow?

KNenagh - sounds like you have a huge project in front of you! I like gardening, but it has to be manageable. Good luck on getting everything prepared and getting your seeds in. It's not too late here, as the May long weekend is traditionally when our planting is done.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

bluesky - potatoes? In Idaho? Say it isn't so! lol. Just teasing you, as Idaho is the potato state.

Lavender is so pretty and I love azaleas. I'm getting the huge, overgrown bushes pulled out of my garden and I'm going to put in some azaleas. I love their colours!

Doing the Dance!

GG - Thank you, and I love the old train as well. Actually, any old train! lol.

Having had horrible neighbours in my condo, I am truly blessed to have wonderful neighbours here. They really do make a huge difference.

Doing the Dance!

cute vid, itchy!
thumbs up

Doing the Dance!

itchy - yes, I'm very fortunate to be able to do what I do and am extremely grateful. That old rusty train is so cool, and like you, I'd love to know the tales behind it.

As for a bicycle built for two... might be x rated tales.... blushing laugh

RE: Can love exist without respect.

One more thing - when I got married, I totally respected my now-ex and loved him with all my heart. That love and respect died when I realized he lied and manipulated people and wouldn't take responsibility for his own actions. The one behaviour in people that I absolutely detest is manipulation. thumbs down

RE: Can love exist without respect.

Personally, I don't think true love can exist without respect. My daughter has had a relationship with her b/f for 12 years - and he's totally disrespectful to her (and me). He's verbally abusive, controlling and manipulative. I don't call that love, it's power and she's completely subservient to him because she's afraid of the consequences. How can that e love?

Nope, love is caring more about the other person's happiness than your own, and you can't do that without respecting them.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Tilla - it's funny, I've never grown peppers yet I really like them. Maybe because I can get them so inexpensively from a local farmer.

Haha re: your granddaughter - she sounds cute as a button! Yes, it will be interesting to see your lettuce and petunias competing. I don't plant my petunias from seeds, just buy the small ones from the garden shop.

Lucky you that you don't get cold weather! Although I really like the seasons and think I'd miss them.

Good for you for using a tomato slice to dry the seeds and plant them. Again, I just buy a small plant from the local garden shop. My daughter starts everything from seed - she's become quite the little gardener. I love home-grown tomatoes, there's no flavour like them.

Mosquitoes love me and I swell up and itch so bad for days, that I need to avoid them as much as possible. :)

Thanks for the mention of the green flash! I've watched many, many sunsets and not once have I seen a green flash. Perhaps it's the atmosphere here, but I'll check it out.

grin

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Jim - I love sugar snap peas, mmm mmm! Blackberries grow wild here and overtake everything, so no one here grows them in their garden, willingly. rolling on the floor laughing

And my roses do exactly that, thank you! grin

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Good morning, GG!

Hope all is well with you and you're healing quickly.

Thank you for the lovely compliments! So kind of you to say so. Your flowers sound beautiful, and I know what wisteria is, but does it have a scent? I've never been close enough to it to know.

Your poppies sound absolutely gorgeous with the blue plants. Last year (or the year before maybe?) there were orange poppies planted in the gardens around the lake I used to cycle around. Behind them was some Russian Sage, and the contrast of colours was simply beautiful. The way you describe your poppies, I can just imagine what they look like. How lovely for you to see them on a daily basis during their blooming.

I used to grow herbs, but haven't in a long time, and yet, there's nothing like fresh herbs in your cooking. What herbs are you growing? Tomatoes are pretty hardy, so hopefully you'll have enough sun to give you a good bounty.

My daughter was the one that told me about the marigolds being a mosquito deterrent. As she lives right on a stream, they get lots of mosquitoes in the summer, so the marigolds help keep them away from her deck.

I'm sure you'll be so happy when you can start bending and doing things again. In the meantime, it sounds like you have a lovely garden that doesn't require a lot of work. That's my style. grin

How Does Your Garden Grow?

CM - Thanks! The first year of moving is always hard to decide what to do. I have mostly pots this year, as I need to get some very big shrubs out of my garden, as well as the ground cover, in order to plant anything.

I wouldn't dare grow a marijuana plant, the competition would have my head - literally! wow

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Wow - this is what happens when you're busy and don't check in! Yikes!

Good morning 1to1! wave

As I don't eat many potatoes, I've never grown them, but one of my fondest memories is when I was a little girl, and Dad would dig them up from the garden, wash them and wrap in tin foil, then stick them in the bottom of the pile of burning leaves. He'd bring out the butter and we'd sit on the edge of the garden dipping our potatoes in the butter.

So nice that you share your bounty and that sometimes it's returned with baking. I call that a great trade-off! thumbs up

RE: Beta reader needed

Okay, sign me up for whodunits and historical novels. What is SF?

On Being Human....

Mollybaby - while I don't disagree that we are arrogant and overthink our own importance, I disagree that we're not that great. We have the ability to be incredibly great, but we waste it on things that in the whole scheme of life, are unimportant.

On Being Human....

Chesney Christ - thanks for your comments. As I mentioned to CM - my time is limited this morning and I'll respond later. There are some things I disagree with in your comments, and some I can agree.

On Being Human....

Bearwoman - that can be somewhat true, depending on what you focus on. There are really good people in the world, and all you have to do is look at the natural disasters to see how many people help. There are a lot of people that do good things on a daily basis, but are the unsung and unseen heroes. Why? Because our society focuses on drama and the negative, because that's what sells.

On Being Human....

CM - welcome back!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. As I've got to get out of here early this morning, I'll come back and give a more in-depth answer later. grin
