Yes Dru glad you looked it up. As I understood it, for whatever reason, the cells start replicating rapidly and divide too quickly for the genetic material to fully duplicate. After the tumor has "become" then it mimics a hormone in the body the stimulates blood vessel growth. This of course in turn causes things to grow rapidly. Strangely it has been found that some types of tumors produce another hormone that keeps the other starts(tumors) in the body from developing.
There is a therapy that is available now that sends the other message to the body in the area of the tumor, to stop vessel growth. I believe these are called angiostatins. This may be part of his follow-up treatment, post surgery.
