The Term "Hero" is overused. Someone sacrificing themselves to save other people is clearly a hero, likewise a man who goes above and beyond his call of duty to achieve whatever mission he is given to undertake.
Many "real hero's" work is never even acknowledged, for security reasons
People are given medals sometimes for political reasons but generally they dont give out Silver stars or "Hero of the Soviet Union" for just driving a bus.
These people did their job generally with such conviction that events rolled in their favour, probably based on their training, as even the most hard man will get unnerved in combat.In short they were lucky they came home to their loved ones and the most a country can offer is a medal to say thank you.
