It's as yet unclear what caused Rafferty's death, though his fairly-well-documented alcoholism probably didn't help, as he experienced liver failure a couple years ago. Still, I was surprised and saddened when I heard the news. Rafferty was a terrific talent.
I'd have to say my own favourite is John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley: In Search of America." Even fifty years on, it's astonishing how much of it remains true.
