Oh! John, what a lovely story. You cannot imagine how much I would like to be with you in your adventures, but you know that my English is so-so...
I am trying to improve my English, so...

Nuclear Disarmament

Very much so, I think!

RE: Nuclear Disarmament

Quite simply the apartheid regime and the other nuclear capable countries did not want, or were allowed to let WMD's remain in the control of SA when elections with universal suffrage were looming.

RE: Outdated Make-Up Habits

I find it almost impossible to find suitable make-up, or even wall-paint, colors because stores have fluorescent lighting. Unless one works in an office, these colors are totally different in natural sunlight or incandescent lighting. So, what looked good in the store looks atrocious at home or even in candle light.

RE: Does Every English Word have 2 Meanings?

Even as a native English speaker, these double meanings of the same word have always driven me crazy! laugh I myself have looked at things in the English language that, if taken literally, would make no sense if I were learning English as a second language. They make sense to me only because I was raised to understand them in a given context.

Your list is very impressive. Did you copy it, or come up with it yourself?

RE: 5 Sayings Most People Get Wrong

Actually number four is an antiquated legal term. When you sold or leased land to someone you could (and still can if you own all rights including water, mineral, etc.) sell or lease them all the land, or for specific intents and purposes. In this context intents and purposes are different things. If you only leased with a specific intent you may only use it for that purpose. If you leased for all intents and purposes, however, you may use it for the specific intent stated in the contract and for any other legal purpose. You may be liable, however, if you used the land in such a way that diminished the value of the land if that use was not stated in the specific intent of the contract. The term is really not used anymore since land contracts are small books and every eventuality is accounted for in the terms of the contract.

RE: 5 Sayings Most People Get Wrong

Hmm, the first four I use correctly, but the last I cannot recall ever having used it. But I would have been wrong! I will try to imlement this correctly if I get to use it. Thanks!

RE: Chick Flicks for People Who Hate Chick Flicks (hereafter referred to as "men")

I detest chick flicks. I think they are an insult to womens' intelligence. THE CROW is the most copacetic romantic movie ever made, with a good story-line tempered with just the right amount of action; not to mention that Brandon Lee is TOTALLY hot! lips

Give me a good crime thriller; mystery; or action film (so long as the latter has a good story-line) any day than watching a bunch of gaggling girls sniffling or worrying about what color nail polish to wear. B-O-R-I-N-G! sleep

RE: Do you speak dog?

Dogs are much more intelligent than humans give them credit for. My Husky was bi-lingual & would obey commands in both English & Lakota.

I have owned, studied & worked around dogs for years but I've never heard anyone say a thing about 'reading' dog's eyes. When I worked as a veterinary surgery assistant, I could tell while approaching a dog if it would bite me or not just by looking at it's eyes, & I was never wrong, even if the dog was NOT growling, barking or baring it's teeth.
I guess it takes much experience to recognize that 'crazed' look in their eyes; or maybe if you just know to look for it, you will be able to tell. Most dogs who bark do NOT bite. It all depends on how you approach them. :dog:

I can actually read dogs better than I can people because dogs never LIE!

Money is the root of all evil Misquoted Dickens

'For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.'

Dickenes said the Love of money.

15 minutes of fame misquoted Warhol

In March 1968, Andy Warhol stated, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
According to Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, when Warhol made the statement, he was referring to the chain of command that allowed only certain people to be recognized. Warhol was envisioning the day when the chain would not exist and this broken chain would allow everybody an equal chance at fame.

RE: Why Easter is Important to Christians

Christians believe in the Word of God as it is found in the Bible. A true Christian will never have to have anyting proven, pure faith is enough. It is, however, always interesting to have things proved, but when it comes to faith, no evidences, no proofs are necessary.

And that goes for healing as well, healing doesn't come from the explained. In the Scripture Jesus is asked to give them a sign that he's God's son. He says: 'only the infidels ask for signs, but none shall be given them, unless the Jonah sign' ...
Apart from that, thanks for interesting article.

RE: How To Stop Wasting Time And Money On Dating

I don't know about the author's experience with dating, but in general I believe that people are exchanging emails, or chat or do some Skyping before they meet eyeball to eyeball. In that way they already know each other to a certain extent, and with that comes the knowledge of preferences, needs and so on.
To me this article sounds more like a description of a second date after a speed dating where the two have never met before. Or maybe they met on a dating site and decided to meet the same afternoon. If so, you have to live somewhere near by, and that is not always how it is, just like one of the comments read above.
And expensive? If it just a meeting, it is a question of a cup of coffee and a chat, and that doesn't cost much. If it, however, is a question of first physical meeting after one has come to know each other, money shouldn't really be an object. And if we like each other, why should we NOT spend time together?
To me, the whole article sounds a bit strange.

RE: One Mans Food - another Mans Poison.........

I so agree with you, Angil.

I had a braai here one summer - and bought some ostrich from a local supplier, but didn't tell anyone what it was. After basting in some olive oil and Worcester sauce, I tossed in on the fire, and flame-grilled it to perfection. Their mouths were watering at the smell, and I finished it off with some ground black pepper, and dished up for everyone.

Most came back for seconds, saying how delicious it was.

I waited until after we had eaten before telling them what it was. I can honestly say most were gobsmacked, some went a little green at being duped, but the general consensus was, wow, that was lovely. And they agreed that had they known BEFOREHAND, they would not have eaten it.

So it's all in our heads.

I've had ostrich, kudi, springbok, shark, kangaroo, to name but a few exotic meats. And all are delicious. And safe to eat. I love snails in garlic butter, Calamari, or Octopus, prawns, crayfish, Perlemoen. You name it, I am prepared to try it.

Now.... I wonder where I can find a drie-hoek-koelie-koek, lol...

RE: The “Africanisation” of Africans

Hi Angil,

This is a very interesting topic and it is sad that so few people read these articles.

Having been closely involved with the people in the black township of Mfuleni near Cape Town for the last seven years, I have made a few very good friends there. I basically have ‘the freedom of the town’; I go everywhere, I talk to everybody and everybody knows me.

The other day I visited my friend, Sipiwe, and exactly the same topic came up. Sipiwe told me that if he could enforce it, he would forbid his children to watch TV. He blames TV and more specifically, American programs, for this westernisation of his people. He said: “First it took the white man’s culture (in this country) away, and now it is taking our culture away too. We are nothing like the black people of America!”

The technology is wanted and needed, but it will be a pity if such rich tradition is to go down the drain.

RE: Do you speak dog?

My dog who is a German shepherd has never shown any aggressive or fear behaviour towards me, maybe it's because he's such an angel. No kidding he understands me when i talk to him, i do a lot of research about dogs and always wondered if a dog could speak like me and you, what would they say
