Body cam... what a great invention.

After a review of this body cam, Preston Hemphill gets fired from the Memphis Police Force having violated multiple department policies. Quick read: He was one of the first cops to confront Tyre Nichols and allegedly deployed his Taser during the confrontation.
The investigation is ongoing and I'm sure we will see updates as details are released.

Hugging the left lane...

I see Florida lawmakers are proposing a bill that prohibits continuous driving in the left lane. We already have slower traffic to be in the right lane, that would force most of the driving to be in the center lane. Trucks occupy that lane, so it doesn't sound like a good law as it restricts us to one lane creating congestion with blocked view maneuvering around trucks and slower traffic.

C'mon Florida lawmakers, take a ride on the Turnpike and you will see what I'm talking about.

The Koch brothers...

I saw a headline today about the Koch brothers and thought... didn't one of them die? Yes, David passed away in 2019 with his cause of death listed as cancer. Charles is alive and I believe there is/was a 3rd brother. Anyway, the story goes on to say they are the most powerful machine in conservative politics and currently switched gears and not supporting Trump with a NeverTrump effort to deny him the republican party nomination for 2024 presidential election.
Knowing this, would Trump launch his own political party for the upcoming presidential election and if so, would he have a chance against Ron DeSantis who appears to be focused on the White House as his next stop?

Drone ON...

For years, I've been reading about Amazon making deliveries by drone. For the record, it's not perfected yet. Good idea or not, something on a large scale must get the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which is the same government agency that hasn't allowed flying cars. Remember those?
I'm reading some drone companies have plane-like aircraft that drop their cargo from 10 to 12 feet and not land to release the package. Tell that to your Rolex vendor.

People who make flying cars often depict someone stuck in traffic and like a transformer, opening wings and taking to the sky. Read my lips: It ain't happening.
Airplanes (real or converted cars) have to get approval from a flight tower and have a prescribed flight plan... with the exception of a crop duster in Kansas, they all have to be 'on the radar' and takeoff and land from a runway. That includes manned drones.

While Amazon drones have great merit, you cannot fill the sky with drones dropping $200 Yeazy sneakers across town. What are they good for? In my opinion, special emergency authorization like a 20 minute direct flight transporting a heart (on ice) to a hospital 50 miles away where an ambulance transport could be more than one hour getting through one busy city to another busy city. Just like an ambulance helicopter transport, a designated heli-pad is where the package would be received. Logically, there would need to be a fast charge station for the return flight.

Used car prices...

COVID hit and car buying changed. New cars were in short supply with no new inventory to replenish stock. Used car prices shot up where cars coming off a 3-year lease are selling for the same price is new.
One day I'm reading that's all going to change and another day I'm reading this inflated car prices isn't going away anytime soon.
I'm getting messages from the dealer where I bought a few years ago... they want to buy back my car. I'm just out of warrantee and have been toying with the idea of something slightly larger. In doing so, I'll miss having a car that gets around 35 miles per gallon.

I keep shopping, but nothing interesting has jumped out to get my attention...

Merge Lane...

I have an issue with aggressive drivers using a merge lane. Yesterday, must have been aggressive driver Tuesday. In the morning on the way to an appointment, driving in a construction zone I was approaching a merge lane where two lanes merge into one.
There were lots of warning signs, traffic cones and plastic guard rails in a 30mph zone. Having passed this road several times before, I was already in the main lane and not the merge lane. Traffic was slow, but 2 drivers in Tesla's had to force their way into the merge pushing out other cars that 'gave-way' or be involved in an accident.
Usually, it's someone in a BMW doing a stunt like that.
I worked for a guy who had a truck with oversized bumpers and jacked-up tires. He always pushed into a traffic situation that forced the other drivers to stop, letting him in, especially when he tooted a horn as loud a train.
Last night was a close call. I'm on the interstate highway in the left lane that opens to the express lane. It's after 9pm and traffic is moving smoothy. There is a merge lane for people exiting the express lane that feeds back into my lane. Unexpectedly, someone shot out of the express lane and attempting to eclipse me. It happened quickly as I didn't see him accelerating. The warning light came on my mirror but there wasn't enough room for 2 cars. I shifted to the right as a white BMW passed me within inches of side swiping my car!
I like my car and though I'm shopping for a new one, I'd like the purchase to be by choice and not because my car was trashed by an aggressive driver in the merge lane.

Groundhog Day...

On Thursday morning, the 2nd of February, Punxsutawney Phil will declare an early spring or six more weeks of winter depending on the visibility of his shadow.
I don't know about the rest of the country, but the weather in South Florida was in the 80's with lots of sunshine and warm winds.

Hulk's back... or is that Hulk is back?

Terry Gene Bollea aka Hulk Hogan was in the news the other day about being paralyzed from the waist down due to recent back surgery. This morning I see another story that a representative for the retired wrestler says he's not paralyzed.
Publicity stunt or misinformation?

Little known fact... Hogan plays guitar (and bass) and has appeared on a few public appearances and music videos!

Patriot...

Some of you may remember the guy who propped his feet up on Nancy Pelosi's desk on the January 6th insurrection. He had his day in court yesterday and was found guilty on all eight counts in his indictment, including felony charges of civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding.
The jury deliberated for approximately two hours before unanimously convicting Richard “Bigo” Barnett of the charges.

Sentencing for Barnett is scheduled on May 3rd.

Outside the courthouse after the verdict, Barnett vowed to appeal his conviction, calling it an "injustice.” He noted that the judge had rejected his request to move his trial from Washington to Arkansas.

“This is not a jury of my peers,” he told reporters.
Yes Richard... it wasn't your peers because they were all arrested too!

The 55 minute timer...

In the days of black & white Television, my parents owned a model that had a timer as part of the on-off switch. My guess is people who used the TV prior to sleep wouldn't have to get out of bed to turn it off or experience the 'snow' in the middle of the night when the station wasn't broadcasting a signal.
The dial went to 55 minutes maximum, but you had to turn it a little more until it clicked to keep the TV in on-only mode without the timer. A few times my father forgot to click it into on mode and it would shut off unexpectedly. Annoying, it was.
One night my mother was watching Perry Mason as many people watched religiously. For reference to anyone who isn't familiar with the series. It was a prime time weekly one-hour show that ran on CBS from 1957 to 1966. A courtroom drama about a criminal defense attorney Perry Mason... who never lost a case.
As usuall the last few minutes of the show were the most exciting and that's where the 55 minute timer would click off. Startled, my dad would run to turn the TV back on, but the time it took for the tubes to turn on and get a picture & sound, the climax of the show was over and they were playing closing credits.

"That's it" my mother shouted. The TV was moved to the bedroom and they bought a new TV... one without a 55 minute timer.

Jeff Beck TRUTH...

In 1968, guitarist Jeff Beck released an album called TRUTH and the truth was every guitarist in my city wore out their records learning Beck's licks note-for-note. We knew he played with The Yardbirds in 1966, as well as two other famous guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

Forming The Jeff Beck Group he teamed up Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on bass and Mickey Waller on drums. Blown away isn't credit enough for the album as there aren't any 'B-side' songs on it. All of them were winners!

The original lineup of The Jeff Beck Group were only together a few years as it was reported Jeff may not have been the easiest to get along with, but each version of a new band brought a different set of talent.

Sadly the news came across the internet today that Jeff had contracted Bacterial Meningitis and passed away after a short battle. He was 78 and had finished a tour as recent as November 2022.

The song Shapes of Things was previously recorded by The Yardbirds, but Beck's version has much... much more energy and was the first track on his Truth album.
