Best known in her native US for "Poetry Man", the jazz-tinged love song she wrote about an affair with a married man, Phoebe Snow possessed a formidable contralto voice, with a four-octave range, and a bluesy, smoky, soulful quality that, along with her curly hair and olive skin meant she was sometimes thought to be black, when she was in fact Jewish.

Her 1974 eponymous debut became a classic of the singer-songwriter genre and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist alongside Bad Company, Johnny Bristol, David Essex, Graham Central Station and the winner, the film composer Marvin Hamlisch. Many industry insiders attending the ceremony in March 1975 felt Snow should have won, but she was happy enough just to be there, and to see Aretha Franklin, one her main influences, perform.

By then, the delicate "Poetry Man" and her delightful first album were on their way into the Top 5, and, after opening for Jackson Browne and Paul Simon, she seemed destined to be a mainstay of jazz and adult contemporary radio stations, which had started to feature the easy shuffle of "Harpo's Blues", another deceptively dark highlight from her debut. In the summer of 1975 she graced the cover of Rolling Stone and was back in the US Top 30 with a stunning, soaring guest appearance on "Gone At Last", a collaboration with Simon and the gospel group the Jessy Dixon Singers, from his No 1 album Still Crazy After All These Years.

Snow took her pregnancy, by boyfriend Phil Kearns, in her stride. But in December 1975, she gave birth to a girl, Valerie, who suffered from asphyxia and was put in intensive care.

Over the next three decades, Snow rejected pleas to place her child in an institution and devoted most of her time and energy to her. Though Valerie's eyesight and hearing had been badly affected and she couldn't speak, she did recognise her mother and enjoyed her singing. Snow never regretted her decision to sacrifice her career and care for her daughter who defied medical expectations and died in 2007.

However, Snow struggled with self-esteem and weight issues, and a music business desperate to pigeonhole her. "I'm not a natural gorgeous person," she reflected. "I mean, if I'm gonna look presentable, I have to work at it." To support her daughter, she recorded advertising jingles and commercials in a voice so distinctive she could only do a handful a year.

Snow was not only a sensitive singer-songwriter of disarming honesty, but also a supreme interpreter of other people's material, as she demonstrated on P.S. and I Can't Complain, the two albums of covers she released in the nineties. Indeed, she scored her only UK hit in 1979 with a wonderful version of Paul McCartney's "Every Night", from the Beatle's 1970 solo debut that she reinterpreted for Against The Grain, the last of her four Columbia albums.

Born in New York in 1950, she grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. Her father, who worked for Viking Press and subsequently as a pest controller, was a frustrated performer, and struggled to come to terms with her precociousness. But her mother, a dance teacher, saw her daughter's talent and bought her piano and dance lessons....

An innocent-looking tree in Florida is thought to be the deadliest in the world, with every part of it—from the fruit to the sap—potentially fatal to humans.

The Manchineel tree looks like any other, with lean branches giving way to waxy green leaves and small apple-like fruit.

But eat anything from the tree, stand under it during rain, use its wood to make a fire, or merely touch its sap, and its poison could kill.

The Manchineel was hailed as the most dangerous tree in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2011.

It can be found in only one location in the U.S.—Florida.

More precisely, in the Everglades. So if you thought gators are the most dangerous thing in the sunshine state, think again.

Revealing why the tree gets the prestigious accolade from the record-breakers, the Guinness Book of World Records said: "The sap that its trunk exudes is so poisonous and acidic that the merest contact with human skin causes a breakout of blisters, and blindness can occur if it touches a person's eyes.

"Even standing under it in the rain is enough to cause blistering if the skin is wetted by raindrops containing any sap. In addition, a single bite of its small green apple-like fruit causes blistering and severe pain, and can prove fatal.

"And if one of these deadly trees is burned, the resulting smoke can cause blindness if it reaches a person's eyes."

As its fruit bears an uncanny resemblance to delicious apples, the Manchineel is also nicknamed the "beach apple."

Its botanical name is Hippomane mancinella, derived from the Spanish word "manzanilla," meaning "little apple." The University of Florida claims the tree was referred to as "manzanilla de la muerte" by the conquistadors, meaning "little apple of death."

The existence of Florida's dangerous inhabitant was noted by The Weather Channel's Instagram page, which shared a snap of the tree on Sunday.

It posted a clip detailing the tree's horrifying properties, saying: "A tree growing in coastal Florida is considered the most dangerous in the world. Here's why you never want to go anywhere near the manchineel tree."

The captions echoed the record-breaking entry, citing toxic fruit, "painful burns" from rain mixed with sap, blisters from touching leaves, and blindness caused by smoke should the wood be burned.

The video also revealed that most trees carry warning signs on them, or are painted red, to ward off unsuspecting ramblers.

"Caution the fruits of this manchineel tree are poisonous. Do not stand beneath tree when it is raining," one sign featured in the footage read.

Gaetzgate - It will take some time. But it appears that Matt G. will be spending a long time in jail

There hasn't been a lot published on the progress of the prosecution of Matt Gaetz for his alleged s*xual crimes.
However, this doesn't mean there hasn't been a lot of progress. Indeed, quite the contrary.
The mass of evidence provided by his crony has been unexpected and requires a lot of follow-up.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the legal drama surrounding Matt Gaetz, you probably noticed that the last month seemingly brought a lull in headlines concerning the Justice Department investigation into whether he paid women for sex and, separately, slept with a minor and transported her across state lines. Some might have taken that pause to mean the Republican congressman was in the clear, and that the only thing he had to worry about was how deeply awkward Thanksgiving with the in-laws would be this year. But unfortunately for the Florida representative, that does not appear to be the case. In fact, multiple developments in the scandal that he has asked us to refer to as “Gaetzgate” suggest the guy should be extremely worried about his future as a free man.

The most worrisome, if one is worried about Gaetz potentially doing a decade in prison, is a report from The New York Times that the Department of Justice has added a pair of top prosecutors to its investigation, “a sign of the complex and high-stakes nature of the inquiry.” According to Pulitzer Prize–winning reporters Katie Benner and Michael Schmidt, one of the prosecutors is a public corruption investigator who specializes in child exploitation crimes. The other, Todd Gee, is a deputy chief of the Public Integrity Section, which is part of the DOJ’s Criminal Division, a department that is “involved in nearly all major criminal investigations into alleged misconduct by federal, state, and local officials.” Among other cases, Gee served as a lead prosecutor on the 2020 conviction of an ex-Navy commander at Guantánamo Bay, who was found guilty of covering up a fight with a commissary worker who was subsequently found dead.

Meanwhile, the addition of the two prosecutors is far from the only thing Gaetz should be soiling himself over at the moment. During a hearing in Orlando federal court on Monday, a judge granted a request for a delay in the sentencing of Gaetz’s former wingman, Joel Greenberg, who has apparently been providing the department with so much dirt that it could use extra time to go through it all. In a hint of just how uniquely horrifying said dirt may be, Roger Handberg, an assistant U.S. attorney, told the judge that Greenberg has made allegations to investigators that “take us to some places we did not anticipate.” Greenberg himself had originally been hit with a whopping 33 charges, but ended up pleading guilty to just six, including sex trafficking of a child, which seemingly suggests prosecutors believe he will be able to prove uniquely helpful to them. Per CNN:

As part of his plea agreement, was required to give “substantial assistance” to investigators as they build out related cases. His lawyer has said that Greenberg has held a series of proffers, or meetings, with the Justice Department. Handberg did not say what investigations Greenberg was providing new information to authorities about, although CNN has reported that Greenberg has told the Justice Department about encounters he and Gaetz had with women who were given cash or gifts in exchange for sex.

According to the Times, Greenberg has told investigators that he saw Gaetz and others have sex with the same 17-year-old he pleaded guilty to sex trafficking. In court on Monday, Handberg called Greenberg a “prolific criminal,” ominously adding, “Mr. Greenberg was not alone.”

Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was found liable Monday for damages in lawsuits brought by parents of children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting over Jones' claims that the massacre was a hoax.

Judge Barbara Bellis took the rare step of defaulting Jones in the defamation lawsuits for his and his companies' "failure to produce critical material information that the plaintiffs needed to prove their claims." The default means the judge found in favor of the parents and will hold a hearing on how much damages he should pay.

Lawyers for the parents claimed Jones and his companies, including Infowars and Free Speech Systems, violated court rules by failing to turn over documents to them, including internal company documents showing how, and if, Jones and Infowars profited from talking about the school shooting and other mass shootings.

"Their pattern of defying and ignoring court orders to produce responsive information is well established," lawyers for the family wrote in a court brief in July.

Jones' lawyers have denied violating court rules on document disclosure and have asked that Bellis be removed from the case, alleging she has not been impartial.

A Texas judge recently issued similar rulings against Jones in three defamation lawsuits brought by Sandy Hook families in that state, finding Jones liable for damages after defaulting him and his companies for not turning over documents. Hearings on damages also were ordered.

Hopefully, these findings will make others think twice before spreading fake news from right wing b.s. ers.

The genetic tweaks that make humans uniquely human may come in small parcels interspersed with DNA inherited from extinct ancestors and cousins.

Only 1.5 percent to 7 percent of the collective human genetic instruction book, or genome, contains uniquely human DNA, researchers report July 16 in Science Advances.

That humans-only DNA, scattered throughout the genome, tends to contain genes involved in brain development and function, hinting that brain evolution was important in making humans human. But the researchers don’t yet know exactly what the genes do and how the exclusively human tweaks to DNA near those genes may have affected brain evolution.

“I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to say what makes us uniquely human,” says Emilia Huerta-Sanchez, a population geneticist at Brown University in Providence, R.I., who was not involved in the study. “We don’t know whether that makes us think in a specific way or have specific behaviors.” And Neandertals and Denisovans, both extinct human cousins, may have thought much like humans do (SN: 2/22/18).

The results don’t mean that individual people are mostly Neandertal or Denisovan, or some other mix of ancient hominid. On average, people in sub-Saharan Africa inherited 0.096 percent to 0.46 percent of their DNA from ancient interbreeding between their human ancestors and Neandertals, the researchers found (SN: 4/7/21). Non-Africans inherited more DNA from Neandertals: about 0.73 percent to 1.3 percent. And some people inherited a fraction of their DNA from Denisovans as well.

Using a new computational method, researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz examined every spot of DNA in the genomes of 279 people. The team compiled results from those individual genomes into a collective picture of the human genome. For each spot, the team determined whether the DNA came from Denisovans, Neandertals or was inherited from a common ancestor of humans and those long-lost relatives.

Although each person may carry about 1 percent Neandertal DNA, “if you look at a couple hundred people, they mostly won’t have their bit of Neandertal DNA in the same place,” says Kelley Harris, a population geneticist at the University of Washington in Seattle who wasn’t involved in the work. “So if you add up all the regions where someone has a bit of Neandertal DNA, that pretty soon covers most of the genome.”

In this case, about 50 percent of the collective genome contains regions where one or more people inherited DNA from Neandertals or Denisovans, the researchers discovered. Most of the rest of the genome has been passed down from the most recent common ancestor of humans and their extinct cousins. After whittling away the ancient heirloom DNA, the team looked for regions where all people have human-specific tweaks to DNA that no other species have. That got the estimate of uniquely human DNA down to anywhere between 1.5 percent and 7 percent of the genome.

The finding underscores just how much interbreeding with other hominid species affected the human genome, says coauthor Nathan Schaefer, a computational biologist now at the University of California, San Francisco. The researchers confirmed previous findings from other groups that humans bred with Neandertals and Denisovans, but also with other extinct, unknown hominids (SN: 2/12/20)....

Documents and interview transcripts released by a congressional committee shine additional light on how the Trump administration interfered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, undermining the agency’s efforts to communicate the seriousness of the pandemic to the American people as the virus began to spread throughout the country.

Emails and transcripts of interviews with former senior CDC officials released by the House select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis reveal just how far administration officials went to tamp down the CDC’s public health communication efforts in the face of an emerging viral threat.

"The Trump Administration’s use of the pandemic to advance political goals manifested itself most acutely in its efforts to manipulate and undermine CDC’s scientific work,” committee Chair Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) wrote to Trump’s former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield. “Through its investigations, the select subcommittee has uncovered a staggering pattern of political interference from Trump Administration officials in critical aspects of CDC’s pandemic response efforts.”

According to the committee’s interview of former National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Director Nancy Messonnier, she confirmed media reports that she had angered Trump when she told the media in Feb. 2020 that the virus could cause “severe” disruptions to daily life. Her remarks prompted phone calls from then-HHS Secretary Alex Azar and Redfield. Speaking about her call with Azar, Messonnier said that she was “upset” by the conversation.

“I believed that my remarks were accurate based on the information we had at the time,” Messonnier said. “I heard that the president was unhappy with the telebriefing.”

To distract from Messonnier’s remarks, the administration planned another briefing, former CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat told the committee when she testified.

“The impression that I was given was that the reaction to the morning briefing was quite volatile and having another briefing — you know, later I think I got the impression that having another briefing might get — you know, there was nothing new to report, but get additional voices out there talking about that situation,” Schuchat said.

For three months after the February briefing, the administration banned CDC officials from conducting any public briefings at the very same time the virus was rapidly spreading throughout the United States. The administration additionally denied numerous media requests for interviews with CDC officials. Schuchat said that she and many of her fellow CDC scientists felt that they “were hamstrung by a White House whose decisions are driven by politics rather than science.”

Instead of having the CDC lead the federal response to the pandemic, the White House took matters into its own hands by holding its own briefings and refusing to allow the CDC to speak directly to the public. One Health and Human Services employee even ordered CDC employee Dr. Christine Casey to “put an immediate stop to” the publication of its weekly scientific reports, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). In an email to Redfield, then-HHS Science Adviser Paul Alexander accused the CDC of “writing hit pieces on the administration” in the reports.

In her testimony before the committee, Casey said she was instructed by Redfield to delete that email, a request she said “seemed unusual” and “made me uncomfortable.”

The evidence also shows that the administration made changes to CDC recommendations on how to slow the spread....

It’s easy to be brand loyal to the moon. We’ve only got the one, after all, unlike Jupiter and Saturn, where you’d have dozens to choose from. Here, it’s luna or nada. Or not. The fact is, there’s another sorta, kinda moon in a sorta, kinda orbit around Earth that was discovered only in 2016. And according to a new study in Nature, we may at last know how it was formed.

The quasi-moon—named Kamo’oalewa, after a Hawaiian word that refers to a moving celestial object—is not much to speak of, measuring less than 50 m (164 ft) across. It circles the Earth in a repeating corkscrew-like trajectory that brings it no closer than 40 to 100 times the 384,000 km (239,000 mi.) distance of our more familiar moon. Its odd flight path is caused by the competing gravitational pulls of the Earth and the sun, which continually bend and torque the moonlet’s motions, preventing it from achieving a more conventional orbit.

“It’s primarily influenced just by the sun’s gravity, but this pattern shows up because it’s also—but not quite—on an Earth-like orbit. So it’s this sort of odd dance,” says graduate student Ben Sharkey of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona, the lead author of the paper.

None of this means that Kamo’oalewa has to have especially exotic origins. The solar system is littered with asteroids, some of which are captured by the gravity of other planets and become more conventional—if fragmentary—moons. Others don’t orbit other planets in the common way but fall into line in front of them or behind them and pace them in their orbits around the sun, like the flocks of so-called Trojan asteroids that precede and trail Jupiter.

ither way, Kamo’oalewa was bound to get attention because its composition posed a stubborn mystery. Asteroids tend to reflect brightly in certain infrared frequencies, but Kamo’oalewa just doesn’t. It’s dimmer somehow—clearly made of different stuff, which suggests a different origin.

To investigate the mystery, Sharkey, under the guidance of his PhD adviser, planetary scientist Vishnu Reddy, first turned to a NASA-run telescope in Hawaii routinely used for studying Earth-vicinity asteroids. But even through the usually reliable instrument, the infrared signature seemed too faint. Instead they switched to a University of Arizona-run monocular telescope that, as Sharkey says, could “squeeze every last ounce of photons out of that object.”

That produced better, clearer results, but still they were incomplete. The rock was made of common silicates like other asteroids, but they were common only in their general composition, not in their infrared signature, which remained stubbornly off.

At last, the answer suggested itself. If Kamo’oalewa was behaving like a sort of quasi-moon, perhaps it was an artifact of the actual moon. Earlier in Sharkey’s PhD program, one of his advisers published a paper on lunar samples brought back by the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. When Sharkey compared the data he was getting in his telescope with what the earlier geologists came up with in the rock lab, the results matched perfectly. The kind of space-weathering lunar silicates undergo when they’re still on the surface of the moon precisely accounted for the differences in the infrared reflectivity between common asteroids and Kamo’oalewa....

Covid-19 deaths getting redder and redder, Increasing in the red counties and states.

After the Covid-19 vaccines arrived, there is greater and increasing difference in the death rates of
people who reside in red states and red counties in blue states versus those who live in blue alternatives.
This is due to the reluctance of the red citizens to simply get vaccinated. Russian and conservative propaganda has seeded mistrust by the Republicans in the vaccines and the most reliable news sources. I partially blame this on the lack of unified Republican leadership to urge people to get vaccinated and to wear a mask in public.

As 2020 wound down, there were good reasons to believe that the death toll during the pandemic’s first year might have been worse in red America. There were also good reasons to think it might have been worse in blue America.

Conservative areas tend to be older, less prosperous and more hostile to mask wearing, all of which can exacerbate the spread or severity of COVID-19. Liberal areas, for their part, are home both to more busy international airports and more Americans who suffer the health consequences of racial discrimination.

But it turned out that these differences largely offset each other in 2020 — or maybe they didn’t matter as much as some people assumed. Either way, the per capita death toll in blue America and red America was similar by the final weeks of 2020.

It was only a few percentage points higher in counties where Donald Trump had won at least 60% of the vote than in counties where Joe Biden crossed that threshold. In counties where neither candidate won 60%, the death toll was higher than in either Trump or Biden counties. There simply was not a strong partisan pattern to COVID during the first year that it was circulating in the United States.

Then the vaccines arrived.

They proved so powerful, and the partisan attitudes toward them so different, that a gap in COVID’s death toll quickly emerged.

The gap in COVID’s death toll between red and blue America has grown faster over the past month than at any previous point.

In October, 25 out of every 100,000 residents of heavily Trump counties died from COVID, more than three times higher than the rate in heavily Biden counties (7.8 per 100,000). October was the fifth consecutive month that the percentage gap between the death rates in Trump counties and Biden counties widened.

Some conservative writers have tried to claim that the gap may stem from regional differences in weather or age, but those arguments fall apart under scrutiny. (If weather or age were a major reason, the pattern would have begun to appear last year.) The true explanation is straightforward: The vaccines are remarkably effective at preventing severe COVID, and almost 40% of Republican adults remain unvaccinated, compared with about 10% of Democratic adults.

Charles Gaba, a Democratic health care analyst, has pointed out that the gap is also evident at finer gradations of political analysis: Counties where Trump received at least 70% of the vote have an even higher average COVID death toll than counties where Trump won at least 60%.

As a result, COVID deaths have been concentrated in counties outside of major metropolitan areas. Many of these are in red states, while others are in red parts of blue or purple states, like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Virginia and even California.....

A former aide to Roger J. Stone Jr., the longtime Trump adviser and self-described “dirty trickster,”
was subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury hearing evidence in the Russia investigation and to hand over documents,
and his lawyer moved on Thursday to quash it in court.

The aide, Andrew Miller, has not been mentioned before publicly in the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

Mr. Miller, a registered Libertarian, worked briefly for Mr. Stone around the time of the Republican National Convention in 2016,
helping to arrange media interviews and conducting other tasks, according to a person close to Mr. Stone.
Mr. Miller was also an aide on the campaign for New York governor in 2010 of Kristin M. Davis, a former madam,
whose main adviser was Mr. Stone.

A lawyer, Paul Kamenar, said he filed a motion on Thursday on behalf of a client who was subpoenaed to be questioned
in front of the grand jury, though he did not identify Mr. Miller.
Mr. Kamenar said the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative nonprofit organization, was paying for his services.

His motion argued that Mr. Mueller’s appointment “was unconstitutional,” he said. Peter Flaherty, the chairman of the policy center,
said, “The founders feared exactly what we see in Mueller: a runaway federal official.
We hope to see Mueller’s operation disbanded, once and for all.”

Though that argument has gained prominence in conservative circles, two federal judges have rejected it,
including this week in the financial fraud case against Paul Manafort, the president’s former campaign chairman.
The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, who appointed Mr. Mueller, has also repeatedly said
he has seen nothing untoward in Mr. Mueller’s conduct.

Mr. Miller’s scheduled grand jury appearance was postponed after the motion was filed.

Mr. Stone has become a focal point for Mr. Mueller’s investigators in the inquiry into possible collusion
between the Trump campaign and Russia’s election interference.
During the 2016 campaign, Mr. Stone publicly foreshadowed the released by WikiLeaks of information
damaging to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

He has since said that he was informed by an intermediary about the plans of the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange,
and has denied allegations that he helped collude with foreign powers.

Congrats to Atlanta and their fans

Tonight the Atlanta Braves won the 'World' Series, beating Houston 4 games to 2.
It was only the second time that the Atlanta Braves won the championship.

I was happy to watch the cheating Houston ~~a**hole~~ Astros go down in flames.

I hope the Astros never win another World Series, until every one of their teammates, who
were on their cheating team, are no longer on the Astros.
