Importing Stray Pets from Other Countries

The other day I was reading how someone was bringing a stray home from the country they were visiting. What? We don't have enough unwanted pets here in shelters that you couldn't find one here?

I really have an issue with this, as we have so many pets that need homes in our own country. very mad

They obviously just fell for that particular little animal and wanted to give it a better life.

I would have no issues with that. It is just another animal saved.
Animals don't know they are American or Canadian or Korean, they just know that they are miserable and suffering.
No, they don't know, but the next time a shelter euthanizes an animal because it's taking up too much room, maybe they should ship it to another country instead?

Seriously, animals are euthanized every single day because there are too many. What do we need to take other country's strays for? There's no telling if the person might have fallen in love with a stray here if they'd gone to the many shelters.
I totally understand what you are saying.
But to me the most important thing is that any dog was saved,no matter where he came from.
I once met a chap out walking who had three, fine Rhodesian Ridgebacks...and a mutt.

The mutt, a smallish lurcher I thought, attached herself to him when he was on holiday and he couldn't bring himself to leave her behind.

She ran rings round the much larger, dignified dogs and generally ruled the hearts of all four blokes. laugh

I hear what you're saying Imp, the man spent a small fortune on getting her home and badly needed medical treatment, but like Molly, I say thank goodness for people who fall in love.

Who knows, maybe she set the chap on a path of adopting other mutts, or fostering, or involvement in local rescue organisations. dunno

My cousin has rescued dogs from other European countries. We don't have a common language, so I don't know why. I suspect it was because they were in greater need, or at higher risk. She also rescued a pig which was going to be barbecued at a party she attended. I've never met her, but I like her already.
I was upset when my daughter paid 400 euros for a pug puppy and she could take a shelter dog for free.
It's all about preferences.
I don't have objections to helping pets, or people from other countries. peace
I would rather focus on the kind deed. thumbs up
I'd be annoyed if they had deliberately looked for a stray there (like Madonna going off to Africa to adopt babies) but this is actually a happy story, Imp. You can't force people to dutifully take animals in, but when a bond happens it happens. This won't be setting any trends, I imagine the paperwork is proving a nightmare.

My sister spends every winter in Spain and has done for years, and not only feeds the local stray cats, she has a rota set up among neighbours who live here permanently to keep them fed while she's away. Of all those cats, she bonded with one a few years ago, and it pined when she left and stopped eating, and is now a member of their family and goes back and forth with them. The very last thing she had wanted or intended, but when she left it behind for the first time she fretted (not even knowing it was pining) until she could go back and start the whole vets certificates / passport process. One cat - out of a dozen or more. These things not only happen, they're rather special when they do.

And of course Hammond brought back an old car zero value from one Top Gear trip, and how many hundreds of trips had he been on, and how many cars, most of them far fancier, driven? laugh We wouldn't be human if we didn't take odd fancies.
Although most seem to agree that importing other countries other stray pets is okay, I still object as I feel we have enough unwanted pets in shelters that need homes.

That being said, Jim, I don't have a problem helping people from other countries. Especially those that are fleeing horrific conditions for a chance at a better life. Most people don't actually want to have to leave their homes, but they also don't want to have to live in a place where they and their children are not safe. I hope you're not inferring that I wouldn't want to help people from other countries.

As for pets, I don't imagine I'd want to see an animal suffer anywhere, but would I bring one home from vacation? I don't know, but I doubt it. dunno
Hi Ladyimp, seen something interesting on a cop show here with a k9 unit. The officer with the k9 had to learn commands from another country, the k9 not from here or trained here. I was kinda wondering why with all the trained k9 here this officer ended up with this k9.

I see different comments here with your blog, I kinda agree with all comments. thumbs up
Ohhh that video just breaks my heart. I don't have an issue with someone bringing a resued pet back either. Maybe I would have an issue if they went to another country instead of their own just to do a rescue. Every story is different so I would have to hear their story and then I could tell them my opinion but any time I hear of a rescue I'm grateful.

I understand your thinking, I just think differently on this subject.
Im with the others who think as long as an animal is saved it doesn't matter where its from.....wave
Sometimes we just don't know what kind of bond can happen between man and animal. I'll share a story that happened just once in my life, never-the-less it happened. I walked into a bookstore of some local psychic once long ago, there was a tiny dog on the floor that put a spell on me and I had to have her. The owner said she wasn't for sale, no way. I beg, I pleaded, I offered a blank check and the rings off my fingers, she still said no. I asked her to take my phone number and if she ever changed her mind to please call me. A blank check? That was not my style so I don't know what made me offer that.

Low and behold the next morning that woman called me and offered the dog to me for $125 a huge amount way back then but I gladly paid it. Then my next problem was that I was newly married and I had to figure out how to tell me groom as he was out of town at the time. He let me get away with the dog (it was my money not his) and thus there was a strong bond with me and Magic, that little dog. I would never dream of going to a shop to buy a dog so no idea what possessed me to fall in love with that dog our bond was unbreakable.. I've only done rescue's since, That bond is what made my hubby always say when he came back he would want to come back as one of my dogs.

Now I tease my little dog and ask her if she is my ex? Then I tell her if she is she is lucky as hell.
What happens if we fall in love with a poor lost soul...
Should we bring him home or leave him behind ? dunno

Hi Imp..wave
Regarding dogs I really can't answer that as just the thought of it breaks my heart.

Maybe I should set up a home to rescue all dogs and cats or whatever ...
Just like Brigitte Bardot did?
