What Is Reality?- Part 1 (The Question)

What is reality? Is it strictly the world based on sense-experience as perceived through the medium of the physical senses? How justified is this claim? Socially-accepted concepts of sense-experience reality arise when there is common agreement by society on the interpretation of sense-experience phenomena. Such interpretations may result in the postulation of the so-called scientific laws of nature. Yet, these interpretations are just “interpretations”. One never knows when some brilliant person will come along and show that some aspect of our present socially-accepted interpretation of sense-experience phenomena is no longer valid and propose some other interpretation in its place. This indeed is the history of science in which several scientific laws and theories have undergone modification or even rejection in some cases. When can we ever say that we know things as they are? Or perhaps more importantly, can we really know things as they are? What really is the criterion for reality?

I have said before that what we know is ever changing thus our reality is always changing , our reality is rarely the truth. One can make an illusion real and a reality an illusion.
I believe that this world we live in is only an "illusion" and only looks "real"... in our eyes and interpretation using our five senses.

As Shakespeare once said: "The whole world is a stage and we´re just actors upon it".
Did he know then something that we didn´t know at the time but.... slowly discovering? hmmm idea
Reality is becoming homeless and destitute if you do not have money enough to pay for your mortgage or rent.
Reality is becoming so ill that you cannot carry out everyday chores.
Reality is bursting with love everytime you see that baby you adore.
Reality is feeling a skip in your step when that first snowdrop bursts through the cold soil of winter.
Reality is harsher to some than to others. The harsher it is the more real it becomes.
I get a sense reality is like an onion with infinite layers to be peeled away.
reality is if you cut your hand if you don't feel it it is not real. or you are dead.grin
My reality is what goes on for me from day to day.

The reality of many things changes as you said Socrates as we learn more then the reality of things situations change. But out reality is what goes on around us, across the waters to someone else all could be different.

Happy New Year socrates xx
W.I. Thomas, an american sociologist, together with his wife Dorothy, stated:
"If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences."

How and when would we know that our reality IS the truth?

If this world we live in is merely an illusion, do you think that a REAL world exists?
How can a person acquire knowledge of such a world?
How can we confirm that such a world is not an illusion?
mollybaby

Very practical, down-to-earth and level-headed response!
Reminds me of the quote by W.I.Thomas I mentioned earlier:
TokyoRogue

Interesting response!
What would be left after all the layers are peeled away?
stringman

Do you mean the cut is not real or the hand is not real?
Red

"But out reality is what goes on around us, across the waters to someone else all could be different."
(I suppose it should be "our reality")

Very sensible response!
It's onion rings all the way down.
Life is good, Socrates applause

If it’s just a dream or not real, please don’t wake me up? grin
is the truth more important than a lie? Sometimes we need to believe a lie, because the truth would break us.
I think we all have different realities....we can experience the same things and interpret them differently which shapes our beliefs....so I guess its whats going on with any given person at any given time....wave
Reality is an Interpretation of it as ones own reality. Could Reality be. If ones own has never been altered.Or have our Reality been only a aceptiance of our response. Deep thinking always looks at other angles of what is and what may be.
reality is what we have around us
I think that is why some say reality is an illusion, because we change our reality when we change our thoughts or actions. As far as reality being what is around us, I do not think we know everything that is around us, some things we cannot see or touch.
I'm guessing this is a rhetorical question and Part 2 will be (The Answer)

Happy for you!

I think that those who may claim that reality is an illusion and believe that they really exist, by extension, they themselves would be an illusion.

I am glad that you mentioned Science and it supposed connection to a universal reality.
This will be explored further in the subsequent parts.
Thanks for your comprehensive view.

Sorry, but your guess is not correct.
Thanks for your comment anyway.
The general consensus is that each individual has his/her own unique reality based on his/her personal experiences.
This is in keeping with the statement by W.I.Thomas:
"If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences."

Apart from each individual's personal reality, which may be considered subjective, some may claim the existence of an objective reality.
Exploration of this objective reality is said to be the domain of Science.

I must admit when I asked the question, the focus was on this so called "objective reality" of Science, which will be further examined in the subsequent parts.
You Are Welcome Mister Soc. I only see that things only Happen for a reason. for what made those things happen are a Mystery. At least those do have common Parallels. Good read thanks.
Thank you, Soc wine
Hello Soc,

This thought just occurred to me....with the consensus of each person, in essence, having their own reality..would it stand then, the lesser informed person may have a grimmer reality?

Maybe grimmer may not fit in ALL instances...but perhaps a simpler reality?

"Ignorance is bliss"...also comes to mind.

I have certainly seen many times in my life where a lack of intelligent decisions have made one's life more difficult though.

dunno
In the numbers, an infinity of numbers. My brain has different numbers to your brain so we don't conclude the same number by looking at the numbers, but in this universe all our numbers roughly the same. Similar enough in number to know the good fruit from the one that kills you.
But to answer that we need a blog called "What Is Truth". Everything is purely a matter of definition.
Good question Herbie wink

I see I got the ball rolling with my definition of existence blog.laugh

"How and when would we know that our reality IS the truth?"

I asked the question in response to Marlindap's comment:
"I have said before that what we know is ever changing thus our reality is always changing , our reality is rarely the truth."

Excellent Idea!

I wish to suggest that you should do such a blog
since you raised the matter.
Reality is the cause of our endless fight to dismiss anything that doesn't suit us...
But I neither know what reality nor truth are, socrates44, so I'm not sure I'm the right man for the job. hmmm

Thanks for your comment.

Quite frankly, I do not think anyone knows precisely what reality and truth are.
This blog is questioning what reality is.
The same will apply to a blog entitled "What is Truth?"
I think it will generate some very interesting comments.

You seem to be a very straightforward person
and should make a good OP for the blog.
...reality is what hits you in the face, when you for a second thought, "-yeah, Life is Great!"

the heart just seems to rest there and until something happens, we do not understand its fragility. Sometimes it has to be held together with only 2 hands and as it it squeezed water come from the eyes.
viking

I assume you are referring to a unique direct insight into reality at such a time.
