Aurora Borealis...

It's reported in the news that the Aurora borealis also called the Northern Lights will be visible in several US states and parts of Canada next week. Weather permitting, the activity will be high July 12th and 13th.

The phenomena is described as electrically-charged particles (ions) in solar winds that come from the sun. They move away in waves or a stream of plasma (ionized gas)
coming in contact with the Earth's magnetic field. Some of the ions become trapped and will consequently interact with the Earth's ionosphere causing the ions to glow.

Seen in a clear night sky, it creates a moving shimmering mostly blue-greenish light affect.

Here now is the best time to see Aurora Australis - mid-winter months. Rarely if ever seen as far north as Sydney, but in Tasmania, even the great south road, yes quite visible. I suppose if there is sun activity giving rise to Aurora Borealis, Aurora Australis is also likely to be visible, particularly in this winter season.
FF, thanks. I only heard of Northern Lights and didn't know the Southern Lights phenomena existed.

Google photos shows the come in many colors:

A friend of mine had been on a cruise to Alaska years ago and mentioned the beauty of the shimmering effect.

thumbs up
It's very beautiful indeed. But one thing is misleading if one watch youtube timelaps.
One get the impression it's rather fast moving. But it's slowish.
And completely without a sound.
In my view that makes it only more mysterious. You see our creator is in no hurry
and- he don't wanna stress us up either (lol)

I've seen it as south as Oslo, but more clear and spectaculare the norther you get.

And which states are these?
One article stated more than a dozen and only listed 11.
Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Indiana, Vermont and Maryland.

Thanks Chatillion for the info. I told my Giant about this.
Aw damn. Of course not my state.
With the magic of YouTube you can see them any time.
For what it’s worth though…since it’s virtual.
A big red star has been spotted from South Africa over the last few days, i'm sure they are saying its a new star in the night skies;;
Not sure if it can only be spotted from the southern hemisphere, i have noticed a bigger than normal orange star in the evening off to the west;; its only visible for an hour or so after dark then it dips below the horizon, anyone else in the southern hemisphere picked up on this star ?
