XP no longer supported.

With Microsoft pulling the plug on Windows XP on April 8th it might be time to start thinking about updating, I've been using XP so long I can't even remember when it first came out, but at the time it was such a pleasure to have an OS that didn't crash every 5 minutes which most of the previous versions had a habit of doing, I'd be interested in hearing others experiences on the later versions of Windows as I've read so many mixed reports, mostly written by computer geeks in that language only they understand, being an English speaker in Spain I have to decide well in advance as getting an English copy of Windows here is not that easy, much simpler to get someone to bring a disc from the UK which of course takes time to organise, alternatively I could just carry on using XP without the backup of security updates & hope Norton can hold the hackers at bay.

and its still better than vista 7 and 8 roll eyes
8 is stable enough and if you are up on smart phone User interface's then the app top will suite you.

you should go 64 bit as well while your in process wave
Non, I don't think you're alone on that view & that's what's put me off updating before, that & a deep desire not lot line Microsoft's pockets any further laugh beer
@ Z Mountainman

So if you disappear from here we will know that you are still trying to upload Windows 8.

Seriously hope you manage to sort it.I haven't a clue what makes my laptop tick.laugh
I have 64 bit vista ultimate , its way better than the 32 bit versions ....banana
Non, my idea of a smart phone is one with big enough buttons that I can press one at a time & that can make and receive telephone calls. Will my 4 year old netbook, which is what I use on here most of the time, handle 64 bit, doesn't that need more memory/processor speed confused
Zman,
Get parts from an online store and do a build.
Gonna serve you much longer than a shop bought pre assembled one at half the price. Well worth the investment and time.
dunno
Glitch, knowing that is the easy part, it tells you every time you turn it on, or has that gone with the newer versions doh laugh wine
get a big harddrive , cause its a big install , my harddrive is 2 terabyte's.... and get more ram you will need minimum 1 to 2 gigs ...the install disc will tell you if your system is to small ...wave
I have XP on my oldest computer, and I like it very much. I have windows / on my laptop who is a bit newer. I'm happy for that one too. But I have a friend who has windows 8 and she hate it. So not easy to get to everybody, but if I were you I would go for 7. It's the one that is most like XP. Enjoy your Thursday, my friend.

Virgo, yes I think your computer equipment is legend on CS but rather than spending all that on a computer wouldn't it pay in the long run to spend the money finishing your boat or even getting a delivery of logs so you don't have to drive down to the beach everyday confused beer
Non, I have a built up computer as well but being on solar power it's easier especially in winter just to use a netbook, it's not till you have to generate your own electricity that you realise how much a computer & a large screen use. sigh
I am using windows7 and no problems till now
I build computers ....so its way cheaper to build it yourself ...than to buy something all ready made ...banana
Wel, yes maybe then 7 would suit me better, don't want to the spend the rest of my remaining years on this planet getting to grips with some new fangled system designed by to suit a twenty something with a phone the size of a car door laugh rolling on the floor laughing wine
India, is that you've had no problems or no problems till now because you have one dunno wine
`don't want to the spend the rest of my remaining years on this planet`

what do you mean by that `Zedie`? `dont you know the 50`s are the new 20`s so you are only 30 now` heheheeh
Virgo, I already have a netbook which I'm quite happy with, it needs a new battery as the running time on battery has gone from about 6 hours to 6 minutes but apart from that the only problem with it is that its running a little slow sometimes but I think that's down to years of windows junk clogging it up & a new OS will solve that.
India, so I have about 60 years to go doh not sure I could take that much excitement uh oh laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Glitch, thinking about your comment about not knowing what makes your laptop tick, if it ticks I suspect it's clockwork, have you remembered to wind it recently dunno wave
Maybe your PC is having a recouring dream sleep
I have windows 7 the eight is horrible OR maybe its just because my old brain does not go fast anymore. I like a slow pacegrin bet virgo can find music for thatteddybear
Happy crimble zmandancingsanta
wow me never but I do remember a song ( slow hand) or somthin.
I went to a museum in Manchester and saw the first computers that was a sight to see.
Also when young women!!!! I was in the army in the signals and we did something like our e-mails now on tapes.confused they were cyphered on route. Makes one feel oldmoping well maybe grin I love the learningpeace
Redex, it doesn't seem that long ago we were amazed at the sight of dash bouncing across the screen laugh wonder what we'd have made of Grand Theft Auto back then uh oh wow laugh
Del, it's KB975558 that it's having a problem with, expect it'll sort itself when I shut down.
PS: I am having the same problems with my updates on 7 for the past few days. It is fresh from the press.
Del, of course there are disadvantages to fast OS's, they allow the hacker who was banned earlier this year to post 300 comments an hour on his own blog doh
ditch greedysoft / evilsoft and embrace linux / opensource.
Aj, well that's a possibility, do you use it dunno if so tell us about it thumbs up
Del, not much of a surprise but the first link didn't solve the problem & the second fails to load, tried shutting down & that didn't work either frustrated
Sorry Z.
Since you may have to change OS and you have an antivirus, maybe better to wait and start anew.

Here is an option for Windows 7 in the UK:

mountainman!

being a techie i can understand the fear associated with linux. i would say it is pretty easy now even for a non-tech people to install and work with open source software.

check the following link and give it a try.

go for UBUNTU and it will be more than refreshing.
Del, yes I had a look at Amazon earlier when 7 was first suggested as being the better option, I have to say at £143 from memory it might be beneficial to buy a new netbook with it preloaded as after xmas I expect that won't be much more than an extra 100 or so, this machine is at least 4 years old & not exactly low mileage uh oh laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
You are right Z, it would be your best move. thumbs up cheers
OS X Maverics will mend your worries..

grin
Aj, that's certainly something to think about, I'm still using some really old (1993)picture editing programs, will that be a problem were I to switch dunno
Infamous66, well yes chucking huge amounts of money at most things will solve the problem, but this blog is really intended to help not only me make a choice but other members as well some of whom would find that kind of outlay beyond their means, can't say I find the costs to do that very appealing either laugh beer
@z

the best part of opensource is that everything is free for ever and there are several excellent softwares.

when you migrate to another OS your applications change also and you might already know this fact. what runs in blackberry will not run in nokia.

gimp is an opensource image editor which is as good as the pricy photoshop if not better.
Z! I am prayin' for you, MAN! Lemme know how it works out as I may be doing likewise soon.

Remember when computers first started becoming common? There was this game called Moria. I wonder if anyone here remembers that...

teddybear
CC, don't remember that one, what was it about confused wine
