Americans are seriously valuable.

A US court has ordered the country's second largest cigarette company to pay $23.6 billion (£13.8bn) to the wife of a smoker who died of lung cancer wow put as a number that's $2,360,000,000 & that's just the punitive fine, there's another $16,800,000 in compensation to be added to that, allowing for an investment return of say 7% that will give the widow a daily spending allowance of over $160 million dollars A DAY, she wouldn't dare take a day off as she'll need to spend $300 million the next day doh

wow wow wow that is one SERIOUS ammount of money .. the mind boggles!!! wow
Sure she would sooner have her husband though heart wings some things have NO price tag. Did this guy smoke himself or was it passive smoking that caused the cancer?

Now I am thinking daydream daydream daydream WHAT would I spend ALL that money on grin

But in all seriousness.. no ammount of money is worth a life! doh
wallops, I admire your confidence that she'd sooner have the husband laugh I wonder if that's so, a daily shop of $160 million might just tip the balance laugh rolling on the floor laughing wine
Dedo, it's 23 billion & I totally agree with your thought there thumbs up beer
..rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing Don`t be so sceptical!!!! Have you only had bad experiences with women?? uh oh
OK, Zman, a question?.. If you had a loyal and doting wife who just loved you to pieces and by the way you felt the same heart beating heart wings which would you prefer to have?

I do get your point though... Hope some people aren`t dreaming of this themselves..daydream Mmmmmmm MONEY!! daydreamMmmmmmmm SHOPPING!!!! laugh laugh laugh
wallops, personally I wouldn't even have to think about it......well not for long laugh but I'm afraid if truth were known people like us may well be in the minority in these money grabbing times moping
Virgo, I had a feeling someone would pick up on that laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh beer
now the tobacco companies will have to raise there prices to pay for the pay outs ....or sell out and close operations ...wave
Virgo, the implications are huge, this is just one of thousands or possibly millions of cases pending, it'll make reading the worlds rich list a bit more exciting laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
I bet the tobacco companies will appeal the ruling or go broke ...cause this could snow ball out of control ... banana
There will be in huge mess, when others trying out their luck for same reason.
There will be in huge mess, when others trying out their luck for same reason.
Zman,
it is just ridiculous how a court can come up with such a figure.
with all the poverty in this world, and not just in 3rd world countries, wouldnt.
it also begs the question to be asked, "how much profit is enough"
I do believe that a person who works hard and takes the risks deserves good money, but seriously, how much is too much.
In regards to the lady getting the 23 billion (if she ever gets it),
She will never be able to spend it, it would be impossible.
It is court rulings like this that are just so stupid, it just beggars disbelief.
So many figures in that amount, what will she do with all that moneywow
I can see it now ....I was a smoker for 26 years ...I want a million for every year that I smoked for not being able to associate with non-smokers ....banana
Virgo, yes I expect it'll drag on for years, but this is just one of many idiotic rulings from courts across the world, here in Spain for example they are fond of handing out jail sentences of thousands of years but also have a law that says nobody can be imprisoned for that 20 something years doh
those Case-Lawyers will be laughing all the way to the Bank!
Doubt they work Pro Bono!devil
Wolfy, I expect lawyers phone lines in the USA are red hot today thumbs up wine
Simmo, it's actually quite sick imo, as you say with the worlds poverty level as it is these court rulings are ridiculous frustrated beer
what I see could happen is it will force them to move their manufacturing facilities off shore to countries where it not a crime to kill people who smoke their brand ...wave
India, I doubt it's even possible to spend that much per day dunno you'd need a team of people to do it sigh wine
Conrad, as usual it's a lawyers dream scenario doh knew I picked the wrong line of work laugh beer
These cigratte companies make so much of profit,I dont think it will affect them much, they have been here since ages and inspite of all the warnings there are people who still do it and will continue to smokefrustrated
Virgo, I think to some extent American companies having been doing that for many years, it'll get to the point were nobody will be willing to do business in America imo.
India, well yes they do make a profit, but this is just one of many possible cases & no business can afford to take hits like that, even rarely let alone on a routine basis.
Doubt that she will ever get it so the only people making money out of this are the lawyers. It is completely ridiculous but seems like anything is possible in America where you can sue anyone for anything just because you don't like his attitude or something. sigh
To put a monetary amount on any damage done is asking for trouble, when the next person sues for damages due to the effects of smoking (passive or not) and is the same age as this ladies husband, will they get the same amount, or more/Less?
How can anyone pluck a figure out of thin air.
And to go to the next level, Since smoking is legal, why not sue the government as well as they allow it to happen and actually make money from the taxes they apply to all smokes sold.
Pheeeeew GLAD I haven`t lost my good judge of character... yay yay yay

It is hard for me to get my head around some people though and why they place such a high value on moneydunno It is like they measure their success by how much money and possessions they have....like money is their way to success and fame!!! ... NOT that I am against having some money myself of course but not at a price too high grin
There are so many people who die of lung cancer because of smoking so why was she given so much compensation , what was unique about her case?
Ek, it does seem we live in a "nanny" world now, where nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions & as you say are prepared to sue at the drop of a hat wine
Zman, I'm wondering how she managed to win that trail..confused confused wow
wallops, I doubt somehow anyone will come on here & admit they'd take the money over their partner but I think we know there a lot who would moping
India, as far as I can glean from the article nothing was unique about this case, it's just one of thousands, however as Simmo mentioned, if this is now used as the benchmark for compensation I can't see how many US companies will survive, cigarettes are not the only product that this could apply to, I could envisage this applying to alcohol, certain drugs & probably many other products uh oh
Calleis, well her lawyers came up with a winning argument, my experience has been that if you throw enough money at the right lawyer winning the case is not that hard, quite how they managed to get a court of supposedly sane people to award that amount is another question professor wine
what I can see coming next is retailers who sell the tobacco products will be in the firing line next and the travailing sale's men who force these products on to the retailers ....and the land fill sites will be full of tobacco products ...till there's none left , but crowds of angry smokes who cannot buy it any where....laugh laugh
Do you think, this case will set the trend now for people sueing companies for the death of their loved onesconfused
Virgo, I can see a business opportunity for someone with a bit of land tucked away from sight, in a sunny spot like say Spain to grow a few tobacco plants idea laugh rolling on the floor laughing
then there will be those people who will buy tons of it to double and triple their money selling it on the black market ...and buying it from malaysia where it sells for $2 bucks a packet ...wave
India, picture the scene, lawyer to client " how would you like $100 million dollars a day spending money ", who's going to say no laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
Zee ,do you know of any such lawyer?laugh
India, after this ruling I would think any lawyer will do laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
