Americans are seriously valuable.

A US court has ordered the country's second largest cigarette company to pay $23.6 billion (£13.8bn) to the wife of a smoker who died of lung cancer wow put as a number that's $2,360,000,000 & that's just the punitive fine, there's another $16,800,000 in compensation to be added to that, allowing for an investment return of say 7% that will give the widow a daily spending allowance of over $160 million dollars A DAY, she wouldn't dare take a day off as she'll need to spend $300 million the next day doh

Zman you arethumbs up
Hi Z, handshake hope you are well.
yeah, the land of insanity is getting better... promote "bad products" and make people irresponsible for their action. both sides. millions will continue to smoke, so, not a problem for any manufacturer - consumers will pay the "damages".

wave cheers
Bog, as a smoker I find that even harder to stomach, the thought of paying some woman in the states $100 million a day out my own pocket is not something I'd tolerate, I'll change to a European brand rolling on the floor laughing laugh beer
European brands?.. hum, i think they belong to all major manufacturers... just pay like everyone else, laugh we are not allowed to enjoy life - whatever we choose.

stay well Zcheers
Bog, as our resident expert on companies, a question was asked earlier about whether such a company can afford to pay this award, what's your opinion on that, I assume companies don't have this kind of cash in a draw, even if they know it's coming, & I find it hard to believe a bank is going to lend when further such awards could be just around the corner dunno
zman
I would think this American company would appeal this ruling until the wife has either finally given up or died...
Bog, with awards like this will there be any future earnings dunno as mentioned earlier the only ones likely to earn from all this are lawyers doh
Lou, with that much at stake I envisage the relatives or executors taking on the cause long after her death laugh rolling on the floor laughing wine
The real winners of this smoking lottery are the attorneys. wine
Mimi. I fear some of it has rubbed off on the rest of the world doh
confused I had no idea that men were such a brilliant investment.
Ab, you might even get a second payout - passive smoking professor
Oooohhhh I like the way you think.

... Mike doesn't smoke... yet. laugh
Mike, I'm sure we're all wishing you good luck in your new life down-under, think you might need it professor uh oh laugh rolling on the floor laughing beer
Just a wee problem with this... I don't like the smell of cigarette smoke. scold

...I am not sure how I am going to overcome that. laugh
Just keep thinking about the smell of all that cash, you could have the bank deliver a suitcase load to your house ever day just give it that "Hot off the press" aroma smoking
laugh All of that shopping... at my fingertips.

...except I despise shopping. moping You offer me most girl's dream solution and ... it's just not my dream. laugh
No problem, pay someone to spend it for you laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
Z...I have no doubt Mike could spend it, but as it's from his demise... that leaves me with limited options. laugh
Change your CS profile to - Income 100 million $ US per day, you'd have plenty of options, for a start Cat would be purring at your feet cats meow laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Z...you go first. We shall see how that option works for you. wink
That's a brilliant idea idea will change my profile to - Not worth much yet but I smoke so will be worth $23 Billion soon smoking
Oooh la la... you will have women falling at your feet. Swooning... unable to resist your charm. wink
Z... you could always pay someone! rolling on the floor laughing
Think I'll save all the hassle & just stay a recluse on my mountain dancing
I only wanted to have a nice relaxed evening, read some blogs.. but then some fools start mentioning my name and i gotta log in to reply... pfff

What part of this story to target first...

these stories are so absurd.
I won't get into into discussion if smoking is harmful or not, i've done a blog about that so people can read that one if they want.
But i have to say the legal system in USA has the same level of seriousness as well lets see.. MR.bean, Benny Hill, fawlty towers...
To be honnest, i have no idea how to react to such absurd news.. so many things are wrong with it. But i think i should consider going to court myself.. I could use some extra money.. but do i need to wait until i get lungcancer?? maybe i can sew anti-tobacco lobby if i never get it.. gotta talk to my laywer about that.
Teddy, I've been tied up on here today so I must have missed the fool's blog grin I like the reference to Mr Bean, have to say though if he used this scenario for a sketch people would probably say it was too far fetched doh beer
Reclusive works for me too, Z. smile
I'm just thinking, If i were living in USA and I shoot someone, I think i would sew the manufactorer of the gun I used cuz i was not aware of the dangers and those don't even have warning signs on it as we have on the packs of smokes. Can't loose...
Teddy, I'm reminded of the guy who sued the manufacturer of his motorhome after it crashed when he left the driving seat on a freeway to make a cup of tea, he claimed they didn't warn him that the cruise control didn't do the steering for him doh
it doesn't??? wow i better start paying attention next time i use cruise controle on my truck then.
Teddy, are you sure you're from Belgium dunno laugh rolling on the floor laughing
oh yes,.. and do you know that when i started driving my truck, about 15 years ago.. we had a stretch on the highway, from antwerp to the coast... you could actually use cruisecontrole at 85 km/h and the truck would steer itself all the way with all the turns included.. it wasn't because the trucks equipment but we had sleeves such deep into that section of the road that you really didn't need to touch it. rolling on the floor laughing
You've reminded me of one of fathers favorite stories, he started driving back in the 1930's & cars had really skinny tyres back then, he was driving along the seafront at Blackpool & his car got stuck in the tram lines, he had to go to tram depot to get it out laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
...and he types with capitals again! Shhhhhh Mike.
