What Is Reality?

What is reality? Is it strictly the world based on sense-experience as perceived through the medium of the physical senses? How justified is this claim? Socially-accepted concepts of sense-experience reality arise when there is common agreement by society on the interpretation of sense-experience phenomena. Such interpretations may result in the postulation of the so-called scientific laws of nature. Yet, these interpretations are just "interpretations". One never knows when some brilliant person will come along and show that some aspect of our present socially-accepted interpretation of sense-experience phenomena is no longer valid and propose some other interpretation in its place. This indeed is the history of science in which several scientific laws and theories have undergone modification and even rejection in some cases. When can we ever say that we know things as they are? Or perhaps more important, can we really know that we know things as they are? What really is the criterion for reality?

Hello Soc,

It is something how "reality" can be manipulated by the media, liars, and deranged people. I suppose we can call some of these realities sub-realities.

I think as we discover more of what is out in the universe, we will be changing our current view on reality.

very interesting.
The world has perceived reality to be that which society has accepted.
Mainly what the world sees, thinks and acts upon.
And i wonder what can we say about a person who has schizophrenia. confused

In the "Social Construction Of Reality", the authors Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann, say that reality is socially constructed and socially sustained.
As you have pointed out, especially with "news" items, the media appears to play a significant role in this regard.

"I think as we discover more of what is out in the universe, we will be changing our current view on reality."
This is in keeping with my statement re the history of science in which several scientific laws and theories have undergone modification and even rejection in some cases.
Isnt this another interpretation of reality? laugh

What really is the criterion for reality? With one approach, there is no criteria for reality.
You write so well Socrates.... What a mind .

My reality is here and now .... Thats all I know.
My reality is i am Going into Venice today to Explore the Dosoduro area . It is a great day here today . Catch you later dear man .

reality: the state of things as they are or appear to be, rather than as one might wish them to be

criterion: a standard by which something can be judged or decided

Based on your comment, my question to you is:

Is there such a thing as reality at all, and how do you know if there is or is not?
nicefeet

Thanks for your comment.

"My reality is here and now .... That's all I know."

Very nicely put!

Perhaps, that is the only thing we can be sure of and call reality unless our entire existence and awareness is an illusion.

Anyway, have fun in Venice.
Reality is mostly subjective so don't think anything is completely real. We lock up or treat people with drugs who's reality differs too much from the majority, but maybe they are living in the real world and us in the illusion. dunno

"We lock up or treat people with drugs who's reality differs too much from the majority, but maybe they are living in the real world and us in the illusion."

I read somewhere where someone said:
"The real difference between the staff and the patients in a mental hospital is who holds the keys"
There can be no such thing as subjective reality. That is an oxymoron. wave All is perception. Mind.
Reason I say it is subjective is emotions also play a part in how and what we see as real.
Subjective meaning the opposite of objective. Everything we witness is perceived through our personal filters that have arisen from our experiences.
Perception is the way in which we assimilate information coming in from "out there". Mind is all. Mind creates everything we experience on this plane of existence.
Exactly, Socrates. Objective reality would have to be beyond mind/thought. So, as we drop down, out of thought, we know this objective reality as that which animates all of Life. We can somehow sense that it is here and that it is Truth. But as little thinking humans, we are living mostly subjectively (i.e. from our own illusory reality). IMRT
So basically, I know nothing for sure. grin
Reality I think is mostly based on consistency. For instance if I hit the table with my hand and sometimes my hand is stopped but other times my hand goes right through it then the table it most probably not real.
I live in reality and can deal with it. wave
We're all inferring from a something which would be reality. No one can ever be right in telling you what that something is, only more or less wrong. God would be the one to ask.
I am quite realistic and deal with things as they crop up and tend not to ignore them. What I mentioned is more of a practical approach.

We all perceive things different as we all have different characters, values, living circumstances etc. Influences from outside as you mentioned do have a big influence on the perception of many.
Interesting conversation, Socrates. Thanks for posting this blog.
