When you go on holiday

wish you'd tell me what things are important to you about the place where you stay

Do you insist everything be five star, including your own private pool / sauna / 24 hour service

or do you stay in hostels and hope the other 9 in the room won't snore too loudly, keeping your cash to spend on your activities

While I was travelling in the campervan I stayed at campsites with communal showers and loos, but private hedges around each campsite, rather liked that although it had never occurred to me to ask for my own garden in a hotel laugh

I went to Germany last year for a few days and booked the cheapest hotel I could find, turned out not to be the best area but transport into town was frequent and reliable, the room was clean, and the shared bathrooms on each floor were spotless. I got what I paid for, basically.

Apparently most people have MUCH higher standards, Would love it you'd tell me what things are important to you when you're planning a brief getaway - lavish surroundings, or convenient location, or proximity to tourist stuff, whether you like to be out and about and just want a place to sleep, or whether you want to be cossetted and pampered ...

A bible in each room,
not important in my room, but I know the other sinners need them bad. innocent
I prefer very basic hotel, not a huge fan of shared bathrooms but can handle it if need be. I figure I'm only going to watch ten minutes of telly then sleep, wake up and have a shower and breakfast.
Air bnb is a good thing, most of the time.
writing thanks Non. That's immensely valuable information.

You strike me as a walk on the beach kinda guy for holidays. Not crowded beaches - dramatic ones, with miles of view. Right? Wrong?
I like my own room and bathroom. I don't like sharing help

It doesn't have to be 5* or even 4* , but it does have to be clean and safe.

I don't need air conditioning, but I do need it warm enough in cold weather.

Having said that, I have stayed in everything from shared hostels upwards
That's SO true, Molly, nothing, NOTHING, is worse than being cold and eyeing the curtains and wondering if you can pull them down and add them to the bedding laugh
have stayed in many hotels and enjoyed some ...French ones were poor I thought with bad service so the gites I think is best and have stayed in a good few ..for me the company is the thing is what its about ....south of france is the choce last time stayed a month and had a ball all I needs now is the company and id be in the car and off with me
Cach, last few years I have chased the adventure too, struck off the beaten path a bit, but I never did the backpacking, bet you have some memories from that era. I was sooooooo conventional and staid for most of my life and think I missed out on a lot of interesting stuff sigh
JJ yeah, travelling alone is not a bundle of fun but you should be heading to CS get-togethers devil

So self-catering independence rocks your boat best writing
I'm quite happy to share a shower with strangers professor as long as of course they're young ladies who're good with a sponge smitten rolling on the floor laughing
Non, I don't know it because I got out of the habit of watching TV, but hey, if you remember the name, I should probably watch it laugh
Z I think you have to pay quite a lot extra for that sort of holiday laugh
was in a hotel in tours and got into bed and could not believe were fleas hopping about complained and lady told me is an old hotel and would not refund money so went to tourist board and did get money vback after id say six months hard to believe but happened
Yikes JJ what did you do at the time? Check out and have to find somewhere else? wow
I shared beds with fleas/bed bugs in South America too.
yeah had to move could not get into a bed like that funny thing it was a real nice old place got apology fro m French and was told they closed to disinfect it all .don't know if that happened was not nice and me car was locked away in a bunker had to kind force my way out last time I seen a flea was in early sixties was an outbreak in our schooland spread like wildfire all houses had for a few months yeah gites are great
Molly that's just taken South America off my travel list uh oh
Some of you know I plan to do some airbnb-type stuff with this gigantic house I have bought in Spain but although guests would have sole use of their shower room or bathroom, it isn't really possible to make them en-suite. Gotta go out a door and into the next door.

So I'm really trying to work out how much of an issue that will be. sigh
Cat, fair enough and wow you must have hated those months in JHB hotels wow

Good of you to restrict yourself to a mere tiny bathroom in a hotel when you have the entire veld when you're camping in a tent laugh
OK just checked for ya,
Four in a Bed is the name of that show Biff wink
Biff, I was travelling in South America for a month, and that only happened in 2 places. We were travelling on the cheap laugh

As for your place, a private bathroom even if not en suite is a definite step up from shared facilities.
But then, some people would prefer shared facilities if it means paying less. You could do a combination.

Do your market research, and see what type of person would be your target market.
Oh Yes Biff I have good memories ... I know what it is to sleep with my sneakers as if they were a feather pillow as homeless does in the movies hahahaha ...I love adventure (runs in the family), it has been a little extreme last years but it´s ok, never done what you did (Caravan) but I´m seriously thinking about doing it next year...If I´m lucky head banger .......you inspired me conversing
Non, I'm 5 minutes in and already I'm out of my class, at £75 and £90 a NIGHT cor but it looks brilliant, about to log out and watch an episode laugh hug
Molly, funny thing, I hate sharing a room (unless of course one has to because of some love-type connection which makes it unavoidable) so I wouldn't be keen to holiday with a friend for that reason - yet would be happy to have separate rooms maybe share a bathroom. After all if 3 friends rent a holiday flat together there is often only one bathroom -

Market research is sort of what I'm doing on this blog - well, first questions, finding out what it is people like / demand / hate / compromise on laugh
Cach, I was a bit unnerved at the time I was in the van because I had no idea whether I would still be in it come winter and that wouldn't have been much fun - but you know what, when I look back at that 8 weeks, they rank up there as among the better times of my life. And I have NEVER slept better, before or since, which is completely inexplicable!
Speechless purple heart ...you are fortunate ...those are the experiences that count most (IMUO). I still remember those days with Redex and her blog to support you. Good energy around.

....I promise to think about you if I do...wave
Ha! Watching Four In A Bed - quoting comment just made - 'your bathroom is just across the corridor, and the price for this room is £85 including breakfast'

banana
Ohhh Molly, I´ve got the vision! please help
Absolutely. Private bathrooms it is, unless there are friends sharing, and now that I see what can be charged, my prices are going up laugh

Oh, not that high. But going up.
Hey,
Glad if you get some Ideas and a bit of advice from the show Biff. wave
Biff, I don't think you can compare prices in Spain to those high class ones in that programme laugh

I'm lucky that I don't have to pay for any accommodation now there, unless I travel around. Then I stay in low cost places....With private bathrooms laugh
Not sure you are talking about Spain but just in case, check this pls
Biff! applause

If you're turning your place to an Airbnb thing, Art and I would love to stay there!!! applause applause

But with breakfast in bed served every morning of course snooty .....with chicken feet giggle
Not only that, Zman. scold

Also, make sure there'd be no occupant in the adjoining room in case the walls are too thin wink

laugh
I would put the bed in the middle of the room, far from any wall...just in case grin
Just drag the mattress onto the floor, thus avoiding any disruption to other guests, apart from screams of joy, but the others could join in and sing along.
Push the bed to the middle of the room.

Drag the mattress onto the floor.

Art and I would be left with no more energy to do anything else after that!!?!? dunno help
That's the whole point, Mimi grin
I wouldn't mind going on a Holiday somewhere the same as where I live wine
Non, pack your bag and move into the guest bedroom cool
