Song Remakes...
I listen to a local classic rock music radio station that has a few hours of talk show in the morning and music at 10am. One day, they talked about little known groups who re-record famous songs that help start their career. They stated, the price to pay for this is 50% of the total royalties.YouTube is my favorite source for music and I often follow song remakes.
For this blog, I picked "You keep Me Hangin On" in 1966 by The Supremes, remade (as a psychedelic rock song) by Vanilla Fudge in 1967, and again remade in 1986 with a disco beat by Kim Wilde.

Sia has a really powerful voice and carries the song well.
Gary Jules: Mad World
One of the best covers I've ever heard due to it's haunting quality. Johnny Cash's remake or NIN's Hurt comes to mind as well.
I could post remakes by the boatload but the ones that really stick out in my mind have distinct arrangements that make them stand apart from the originals. I don't see the point of recording a remake that sounds like the original.
One of my favorites is Stevie Ray Vaughan's brilliant tribute to Hendrix.

"Comin' Home Baby" is a song originally written as an instrumental by Ben Tucker and first recorded by the Dave Bailey Quintet in 1961, and shortly thereafter by Herbie Mann. Lyrics were added by Bob Dorough, and the vocal version became a US Top 40 hit for American jazz singer Mel Tormé in 1962. The song has since been covered numerous times.
