With a few cold fronts into Florida this winter, I've been thinking about cooking 'stuff' as it reminds me of a time when my parents were alive and the kitchen was always warm from a gas stove. My dad liked to grill and stove top. my mother was the boiler and baker of the family.
For some (possibly) unknown reason, I thought of rice pudding. Maybe it was the flan custard from a party not long ago. We buy rice in 25 pound bags so there's never a shortage of rice... thinking that I could get a recipe wrong and have to drop the entire disaster into the dumpster!
I made pancakes on Sunday morning... the kind where you only need to add water. Well, I added 2 eggs and used low fat milk in place of the water. Of course it tasted better that way.
Out of milk from Sunday, I went shopping tonight and grabbed the low fat milk again... maybe next time it will be whole milk so I can make some rice pudding.
If I should add raisins or not is open for debate.

Once or twice a month, we used to go to an Asian market in Miami. A competitor with a much larger store opened about a mile from the first one. They have better selections and we started going there. Now that I'm more than 40 miles away, with no other reason to go to Miami, we skipped those hour-long trips each way.
Today we visited another store (by the same owner) in Fort Lauderdale. It's less distance but it takes longer driving through city streets and not highway like the Miami trip. The selections are the same and this trip we got a fish that looks like something of pre-historic origin that Jacques Cousteau would have brought up from the deep ocean floor.
Nearly 3 feet long like an eel, it was coiled up in the bag.
I'll know in an hour or so if it was worth the trip!

This time of year, overwhelmed by veggies in garden. Table out front for walkers by to take some. Kale, Zucchini, raddishes, lettuce....still early for tomats.
I made a sort of stew yesterday. I made double the amount and put half aside in a dish with a lid on it, for another day. Just before I went to bed, I put the dish in the refrigerator. On opening the fridge door this morning, I heard a rattling sound, and soon worked out that it was coming from the lid of the dish of stew. I reached out to touch the lid and it burnt my fingers. It turned out that the stew was boiling away there in the fridge. I took the stew out of the fridge and left it on the work top, where it soon stopped boiling, so I left it for a while and then put it back in the fridge. After about an hour, I went to check on it, and blow me down the stew was on the boil again. Everything else in the fridge is as cold as it should be, it is only the stew that won’t conform to the laws of nature. The ingredients I used for the stew did include a couple of quite hot chillies, but nowhere near hot enough to account for this most puzzling phenomenon.
I like cake, sometimes, everything in moderation. But the worst experience i have had is thinking a cake was sweet when it actually could have harmful effects. One such cake is the space cake...
ALTHOUGH THERE ARE CLAIMS THAT EATING SPACE CAKES CAN LEAD TO PSYCHOSIS OR PSYCHOSIS SYMPTOMS FOR SOME PEOPLE, THERE'S STILL NOT ENOUGH CONCLUSIVE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THEM. Originating from Amsterdam, space cake is a notorious delicacy that belongs to a group of cannabis-infused edibles.
This blog is open to discuss foods, the healthy and not healthy. Some people read all the ingredients on the packaging before they will eat it. I saw a woman who was always reading labels, she seemed obsessive, but if she knew what was good for her and what wasn't then i guess she was a step up on many of us. I still have a lot to learn about food. I want to eat healthy food but I don't want to be obsessive about it. I also don't want to be around people who are miserable and only nice when you serve to meet their need, and are jealous of your lifestyle. They drain your energy...this much i have learned. Life is a learning process, everyone is at a different place.

First, let me tell you the name of the Monster Energy. It's called Ultra Gold, and it's sugar free. It contains taurine, ginseng, caffeine, vitamin b and pineapple flavoring.
Taurine, if you didn't know, is a nervous system depressant and has a stimulating effect on the brain, so TECHNICALLY, it's good for you, albeit in small doses. Some will claim that the taurine in energy drinks is bull semen, which is false. The taurine in energy drinks is synthetic.
Anyway, back to the new Monster Energy.
Opening the can, I got a strong smell of pineapple, which I love! I took a sip, and was a bit disappointed. It tasted like watered down pineapple juice.. It's definitely not among my favourites, but I am not going to waste it. I will drink it and never buy it again..

Spring Violet Jam..using Wild Violets
Spring is Violet time in the Midwest...did you know you could use the blooms to make a edible Jam? Here's a recipe for making Violet Jam using the blooms only, not the stems or leaves. Be sure to pick your blooms in area free of pollutants or spray. Anyone with allergies should sample small amt of this to test for reaction to the flowers involved.
1 1/2 cups violet blooms (purple color or white)
1 1/2 cups water, divided
Juice of 1 lime
2 1/3 cups sugar
1 package (1 3/4 ounces) powdered pectin
Rinse violet blooms well, place in blender. Add 3/4 cup water & lime juice, blend well.
Gradually add sugar, blending til a smooth paste is formed.
In a saucepan, combine pectin & remaining water. bring to a boil for 1 minute. add to blender & blend 1 minute.
Quickly pour into prepared jars & seal with lids or may be stored in refrigerator. Jam will be magenta pink color if using mostly purple blooms.
Makes 4-5 small jars of jam.
Very good on biscuits or toast.
