Many years ago, I took a cheap serrated blade steak knife and used it for cutting watermelon. To accomplish this, I curved the blade. The plastic handle cracked last month. I when shopping for a replacement at the dollar store... where things are $1.25 now.
Times change and the steak knives they now carry, have a straight edge. No problem, so I bought two. I opened one package, washed it and was amazed at the quality of the knife.
Stainless steel with a moulded handle. It cuts much better than the other steak knives and I plan to go back and get a few more.
It cuts like a knife, but it feels so right!
The old knife served me well...

This is not a complaint blog. It's an observation and a question. I live near Pittsburgh, PA. On the 4th of July my son went to the store to pick up a few dinner items. I rarely have a craving for hotdogs, but that's what I wanted to make for our Independence day dinner. As my son was in town I asked him to pick up a few things, including hot dog relish which is like a finely diced sweet pickle with mustard. No hot dog relish to be found. In fact he'd never heard of it. As I said we rarely dine on hotdogs. They had regular sweet relish. That's it. I thought surely he must have failed to look properly. After the holiday I went to the store and no hot dog relish to be found. Apparently it's not a thing in the Pittsburgh area. Days later I still can't get over it. Yes, absolutely there are far greater (and real) problems in the world than the fact that people where I live fail to recognize the awesomeness of hot dog relish. To be honest, I usually prefer to drown my dogs with yellow mustard and diced raw onions.
Anywhoo...that got me thinking. In the hotdog-eating world, what is the standard of excellence of toppings? Anyone who mentions ketchup gets ignored.
According to new research on foods supposed to be for vegans, one third of these products was found to contain animal by products, such as milk and eggs. Apparently it is very difficult to find vegan foods that are 100% without some form of animal by product.
Who wants coconut? :)
One of my favorite drink ^_^
In S.A. we make a delicacy, called Biltong:-
My dad, and granddad would use mainly beef strips from the back around the spine, cut into around 30cm x 8cm strips.
These strips then get marinaded in ur own special recipe, which varies from person to person, for a while.
U then put a hook at the one end of strip of marinated raw beef meat, and hang it up in a well ventilated room, up high.
Now depending on ur taste, these strips are taken down at varying degrees of dryness (it shrinks during the drying process) and cut up as u like, with a special tool and eaten.
It has a rubbery tangy texture, depending on the marinade used.
Will u eat it?

Ilove one restaurant in beijing a lot. I had the gongbao prawns. they used big prawns together with pepper and garlic, peanuts as well as some garlic stalk. I think they need first stir fried the garlic and pepper, ginger and spring onion stalk, they need add some sugar in the pan too, and then fried everything in, then add soya sauce and sichuan pepper. Then they will add the big prawns in. and they could add in some chicken stalk to make the dish more tasty. Then add good quantity of salt, and add a bit of oil.
This spicy gongbao prawns has very special taste. Ilike it a lot.
