Gambling, under any other name...

...indeed. I play the lottery as follows. But with no other gambling habits. About a dollar weekly, and my small winnings so far yield about half back. Not all that different, allegedly, for the slots and tables.
Now, the liberal politicians in all States here, claimed that much would go to education, decades ago, when all began state lotteries. Over time, it seems that only Georgia hasn't lied about this. For the rest, I'm told, it all goes into the general fund. Mostly then simply pissed away. But at least some small amount goes to government schools. Which under teachers' unions do much the same. Digressing
I've been doing so since a long term tenant in one of the family estate rentals won the one million jackpot. A nicer bloke you'd never meet. Factory worker. Decent and humble.
So as tiny as the struck by lightning chances for a big win may be, if it comes, I can stop being a dilettante at my charity giving. As evidenced by plenty.

Mega Million hit a billion...

Tell me it ain't so... Mega Million rolled over again and the jackpot has reached a billion dollars. The lure is so great the lottery website is lagging with response.
Personally, having a billion jackpot wouldn't make me want to run to the lottery booth any more than 100 million jackpot.

Mega Millions...

Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot is up to $850 million with the drawing Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

This is the third largest jackpot in lottery history.

I used to work at a place with about 50 employees and whenever the jackpot was high they would pool their monies and buy a stack of tickets. We used to talk about renting a tour bus to ride to the capitol to collect our winnings. That never happened.

5 bucks to get in on the lottery pool... It's nearly a year since I worked there and I suppose if I asked, they would let me get in on the action!

Greyhound...

I was out running errands and saw a guy walking his dogs. Not your usual breed. These were Greyhounds. Two of them with long leashes and he was jogging enough for them to do more than a trot. If I decide to get a dog again it might be a miniature Greyhound.
They are so sleek that they appear to be moving when they're not!
laugh
For years, gambling and dog racing has been legal in Miami and my dad used to make frequent visits one of the many tracks. My (first) wife and I went once to see what it was all about. I suppose you have to spend time going over the dogs and history to make a good choice. I really had no interest in the sport.
On the way out of the parking lot we saw trucks that were used to transport the dogs. There could be as many as 8 cages per truck. Each cage was designed to hold one dog and the lockable doors had louvers for ventilation.
Out of curiosity, we got up close and could hear some of the dogs inside their cages.
Some young kids from the neighborhood gathered around one of the trucks and you can hear their excitement as one kid remarked "Dems racin' dawgs"
Hearing that, my wife and I laughed and to this day if the subject of Greyhounds comes up, you can be sure one of us will say "Dems racin' dawgs!"

Completing a game that leaves you go "That's it? Really?"

This month's free games on the PS4 is Worms Rumble and Just Cause 4. I decided to get both, and then play Just Cause 4. The lead character is Rico Rodriguez, an Agency asset, sent to topple various dictators around the World. The 4th game is set in a fictional South American country called Solís, which is home to extreme weather conditions. Rico takes on the Black Hand, the world's most powerful private army run by Gabriela Morales. The Black Hand served as a mercenary group to dictators Salvador Mendoza from the first Just Cause and Sebastiano Di Ravello in Just Cause 3. When Rico is shown evidence that his late father was working with The Black Hand, he plunges into the South American nation of Solís, the homeland of the Black Hand in search of answers.

The gameplay is an open world action adventure game, where the aim is to cause chaos. You do that by BLOWING S#!T UP! Literally! Anything marked with red can be blown up. We are talking fuel depots, barrels and various other things. You can also blow up fuel stations, which creates a MASSIVE fireball!

The devs of the game have REALLY made sure that the explosions looks as epic as possible, and they do! However - and there IS a however - the game has annoying side quests. One of the people offering side quests is an American film director, who is on Solís to shoot a movie, and she drafts Rico to shoot certain scenes. It can be a high speed pursuit, a wing suit stunt or a bike race. They are VERY annoying! As in "Oh stop giving me these damn side missions, please"

The story is just 20 hours long, and it's surprisingly boring. You'd think that in an action blow-stuff-up-epicly kind of game, the story would be equally as amazing. The only issue is: It isn't. When the story was completed, I was sitting in my chair going "That's it? Wow, that was anti climactic".. But I got the game for free, so I can't really complain.

Next up is House Flipper, a game that I have played extensively on the pc. It's now out on consoles, so I am playing it there as well!

Rating for Just Cause 4: 7/10

I need upgrades!

For the past year and a half, I have been using the same keyboard and mouse, for gaming. I think it's time for an upgrade, but I don't know which ones to pick. There are so many different products to pick from, and in very different price ranges.

Normally, I am going with Razer, but they are a bit expensive for me at the moment, so I have to look elsewhere. I might just find something cheap, which means I need to get a few of each. Maybe three keyboards and three mice. I also need a new desk, or at minimum a new piece of furniture, to all the things on my current desk. I also need a new chair, since this one I have now is a bit.. Cheap.. I got it for 146 USD, while the more sturdy ones are around 450 USD. Last but not least, I need a new power supply and a case for my pc parts, I have laying around. Those are pretty cheap, so hopefully I will not have to spend over 1000 USD on upgrades to my gaming things. I do have a PS4, which I can play most games on, but there are some games that I need a pc to play. Simulation games and such. Luckily, my new career is relatively well paid, so I can slowly but surely upgrade my setup, one month at a time.

Lucked out....this time.

The forecast this evening called for a possible tornado.
We don't get many tornadoes in New Jersey.
But, about 3 times per year we get warnings of potential ones.
To the defense of the news, we actually do get a few small ones.

One time one formed right in front of me.
It got started on a hot summer day, No clouds at all.
An SUV stopped at a 4-way stop sign and when it drove away, a very small tornado started,
During the next 5 minutes, it got bigger, and bigger & bigger
and was shaking large trees. Luckily it ran into a tall brick college dormitory,
or it probably would have kept growing.

About 20 years ago, a tornado went down a main street one block from where I was living at the time.
I didn't know it at the time. The next day I learned about it, as I witnessed the damage it
did to a strip mall a block from my house. It ripped the roof off of one building and some
air conditioners out of the walls of other buildings.

This summer New Jersey got some water spouts off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean and
also a tornado that fell some trees.

Getting back to tonight, I decided to walk to a store to buy some chicken. The store is perhaps a mile away.
When I got outside, it was strange. It was totally overcast, complete cloud cover.
It wasn't raining, but it was quite threatening. I debated driving or not, and chose to walk anyway.
As I began to walk, I noticed that every 3 seconds or so, lightning happened.
There was lots of lightning, but it wasn't the typical cloud to ground lightning.
It was all above the lower cloud level.
So, the clouds would light up all over the sky every 3 seconds or so, and thunder was mostly
not present.

On my walk back, the cloud lightning still continued every 3 seconds, and the last 600 yards, or so, it
started to drizzle a little bit. When I got 2 steps from my front porch, the clouds let loose.
They were pouring out buckets of water. Luckily, I had a wind breaker on, and my house key out of my pocket already. So, since I was in the rain less than 2 seconds, I didn't get drenched.

I lucked out....this time.
