Here we have one recent example to prove this point TRUE !!

It must have been last year when I flushed too much paper (among other things) down the toilet and clogged the entire sewer pipe. I bought a 50 foot plumbing snake and lots of drain cleaning chemicals to get the pipe open again. Doing the work manually took a few hours but the job was done. A few weeks ago the plumbing back-up happened again. I tried for 30 minutes with the snake. Having no luck and not wanting to fight with it, we left Miami for the condo and put off the project for the following weekend.
I decided to rent a 75 foot power feed unit from Home Depot. This thing was pathetically slow and I got about 60 feet into the drain line and it was still clogged. Setting the power feed to retract the coil jammed the mechanism and it would not retract. A call to Home Depot and they told me to wrap the coil as best as I can. I had to pull the coil out by hand (with rubberized gloves) and at the end of the snake was a chunk of 'something' that I originally thought was a clog of hair! Close observation revealed it was thin long roots. There are no trees in the area where the underground pipes travel. I know the old drain pipes are made from clay/pottery in sections about 6 feet long and the joints were sealed with tar. Over the years, the ground settles and water seeps into the soil. That's what attracts roots to grown to the water source and enter the pipes usually cracking them if this goes on for any length of time. So, I knew the reason as the paper (and poo) snagged on it's way to Washington D.C.

Using a few feet of copper wire wrapping I was able to get the coil around the outside of the machine and back to the store. They were nice to allow more time for the rental and gave me another machine that had a power feed at least 10 times faster than the broken one. We got back to the project and this time I added a cutter head attachment that's designed to shave off roots inside the pipe. The company who hires out to clean drains with a drain auger is Roto-Rooter. This is similar only cheaper as I'm doing it myself.

Less than 30 minutes with the new machine cleaned the clog. I ran it back and forth several times to be sure to scrape away as much of the roots as possible.

This weekend I gave it the ultimate 'poo down the pipe' test and all went well.

Being a stubborn and independent old woman I need advice
Can somebody please tell me what's happened. I have laid 5 terraces all using the same method and composite decking, so it matches, yes I'm fussy like that. However the last one I've done has problems. The composite decking has decided to split length ways, not just one plank but at least 14 about 50% of it.
Any ideas would be good. yes i have asked my male friends, all i get is head scratching and yes one built his own house and the other a master carpenter.

and one of those is the fact that my friend and i could be friends with the same guy in here unknowingly. fortunately, my friend was open enough to share who she met here. So luckily she has no idea regarding me befriending him. I gotta do the right thing to avoid any interference of whatever they've started before i ruin anything.

Hello everybody. I know that my english it's not perfect, infact I am italian, and I live in Italy, but I know the basic english. Today someone have sent me a mail with that message "You have problems with your english, sorry". I think probabily this is a way to wash hands up to reject my proposal in communicating. For you, what is important here? The knowledge and mastery in language or know the feeling of a person ?

The house I'm living in was built 70 years ago and fitted with a septic tank about 10 feet from the back of the house. The city did an upgrade connection to a sewer system shortly before my family purchased it around 60 years ago. The tank remains, but sewer pipe runs over it and connects to a main line at the front of my property. Over the years, we've had very few problems with the system.

The method for sewer lines back then was a series of interconnecting clay pipe in sections (like the photo) about 6 feet long that had a ring of tar to seal the fittings.



Over the years, the ground shifted. Although the pipes were intact, the tar between the joints separated and began to leak. It's not a big problem unless you have a tree near the sewer line where the roots from the tree (seeking water) will grown into the pipe making it crack. The roots continue to grow inside the pipe increasing the chances of things getting snagged, creating a complete blockage.

We had our first issue more than 20 years ago. I called a Roto-Rooter plumbing service to 'snake out' the drain. Unfortunately, he wasn't equipped to do the job. A call to the city got their repair truck and a guy who knew how fix things. The plumbing snake he used had a large diameter rotary cutting head that trimmed off the roots growing within the pipe. The advice was 'get the pipe replaced' as slicing the roots only made them grow back faster. I did and had 30 feet of pipe around the tree replaced with a seamless piece of PVC.

I live on a street and my neighbor lives on an avenue. Their plumbing joins with mine in a "T" connection about 70 feet from the property line. Someone on their side flushed something down the line that blocked up both sewer lines. The city was called and they replaced most of the line with PVC at no charge to either of us.

At least 7 years ago , I did a bathroom renovation and installed a 'new fangled' toilet that uses 1 gallon per flush and (in laboratory tests) can send a load down 50 feet of pipe!
(are you impressed? I know I am) This toilet doesn't clog.

On Sunday, the toilet was backing up. The problem was the sewer and not the toilet. Admittedly, both me and my wife are big users of butt-wipe and go through a mega roll every few days. That was enough to cause a sewer backup. I rarely need to hire people to do repairs that I cannot do and I dumped a gallon of drain opener expecting the problem to be eliminated. Not true. I checked all 3 plumbing cleanouts and see the trouble was in the first 50 feet... the part that hadn't been upgraded.

A trip to Home Depot Wednesday night and a 50 foot plumbing snake had me busy Thanksgiving morning. The clog is gone, my hands are tired of wrestling the snake for an hour, but it's done!
