zeus911: unfortunately it won't go away, maybe for us but surely not for the Libyan people.

As things are looking, hope is fast diminishing for these people. As I write thousands are said to be fleeing from Ajdabiya towards Benghazi but when that last city falls which now seems a matter of days, where will they go?

I wonder what will happen to them? It may be that Gaddaffi will not dare to prosecute them, he will rather make a big gesture to give amnesty to everyone. He will want to look nice, or at least his son may want to look democratic.

In another report Libyan state television has claimed that the armed forces have retaken control of the city of Misurata and it was now being "sterilised from those criminal armed gangs".

But according to Reuters, residents and rebels in the city denied the report and quoted three residents as saying:

"This is not true. They are lying. Misurata is quiet and there is no sound of any bombing"

Further reports by Al Jazeera quote a figure of 30 dead lying in a hospital in the now captured eastern town of Ajdabiyah amongst whom are women, children and elderly persons.

Yes quite likely... he would probably make a public amnesty to all returning citizens, after all according to him they were 'misled' and 'duped' by armed criminal gangs so escaping citizens cannot really be blamed.
The thing is, that won't stop authorities picking up and cleansing any known activists or their families...

After what happened in the beginning where the pro-gadaffi supporters were running over protesters with cars...
if my 20th cousin married to my brother in-law twice removed was a protester, I'd leave the country-FAST.
Honestly, what do you think is going to happen to anyone marked as a protester or knowing someone who was?

Which will strengthen opposition to him. He will have to go soon anyway, his position is shattered irreparably. But, if, as Saif Gaddaffi said, they are going to have reforms for more democratic society, it might be a similar situation as with Gorbatchov's reforms in the former USSR. It just suddenly fell apart. So, whatever the outcome right now, it is not in vain that these people rebelled, I think.

Me too, no way I would trust Gadaffi or his son with all the lies and brutality they have displayed. "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken chit," Forgive and forget, Amnesty....These folks don't have it in them...conversing

US pushes for air strikes, no-fly zone in Libya
By REUTERS

United States seeking UN authorization for air attacks against Libyan tanks, heavy artillery, diverting frozen Gaddafi assets to rebels.

WASHINGTON - The United States, in a sharp shift in tone, wants the United Nations to authorize not just a no-fly zone to aid Libyan rebels but also air strikes against Libyan tanks and heavy artillery, US officials said on Thursday.

The United States has concluded a "no-fly" zone should be adopted and other measures that go well beyond a no-fly zone, should be taken, including air strikes against Libyan armor and artillery, US officials said.

The United States is also seeking UN authorization for other steps under consideration, including diverting frozen assets of leader Muammar Gaddafi to Libyan rebels for buying weapons and tightening a Libyan arms embargo.

State Department Undersecretary of State William Burns said the United States supports international measures "short of boots on the ground" to address the Libyan crisis.

He said Washington is concerned Gaddafi could "return to terrorism and violent extremism" and create turmoil in the Middle East.

Any military plan adopted must have active participation by Arab League nations.

"They have to do more than just support it," a senior official said.

The move toward a tougher stance in favor of military action comes after an extended internal debate within the Obama administration, and as the Libyan opposition appeals for immediate assistance to prevent the rebel capital of Benghazi from falling to forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Pentagon officials have made clear their wariness of instituting a no-fly zone with US forces already engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan and a massive relief operation under way in Japan.

At least 30 women, children and elderly men have been killed in crossfire as Libyan rebels and Gaddafi's troops fought around the eastern town of Ajdabiyah, Al Arabiya TV reported on Thursday.

The rebels have been trying to halt a push towards the insurgent capital of Benghazi by Gaddafi's troops, who have surrounded Ajdabiyah, 150 km (90 miles) south of Benghazi on the Gulf of Sirte, an eyewitness said.

CNN NEWS claim a vote could be held within the next few hours....

Libyan forces loyal to Gaddafi are to stop fighting on Sunday to let rebels 'surrender'.

The Libyan army announced that it would halt military operations from Sunday at midnight to give rebels the chance to lay down their arms and benefit from an amnesty, state news agency Jana reported.

"The provisional general committee (ministry) of defence has decided to halt military operations against the armed terrorist bands from midnight on Sunday to give (them) a chance to lay down their arms and benefit from a general amnesty," the ministry said, however, not giving an ultimatum.

Gaddafi retaliated against the renewed possibility of a no-fly zone by threatening the mediterranean region.

Military and civilian aircraft and sea craft could be targeted, Libyan foreign minister was quoted as saying.

"And any civilian or military moving traffic will be the target of a Libyan counter-offensive," he said.

"The Mediterranean basin will be exposed to grave danger, not just in the short term but also in the long term."

"Throw away your arms and make your way out of the city, Gaddafi warned the citizens of Benghazi as part of a radio address to the besieged city.

In one of his typical long speeches, Gaddafi expressed his anger at foreigners meeting tonight to threaten his country. Calling them traitors and infidels he specifically attacked both Qatar and Kuwait which have declared their possible participation in a possible no-fly zone. He called on citizens to lay down their arms and abandon the rebels repeating that people were fooled and duped into this by these traitors. Once again promised an amnesty to all who did so, but promised a hunt street by street and house by house for those who did not do so this very night, implying an imminent attack on the city.

It seems Gaddafi is increasing psychological pressure on Benghazi in order to demoralize the people and speed up its downfall before the world intervenes.

In an interview with RTP, a Portuguese television station, this evening, Gaddafi is reported to have said:

"The Security Council has not got the right to interfere in the internal affairs of any state. It would be a flagrant colonisation, without any justification. A serious and grave {something inaudible}. This is craziness, madness, arrogance. If the world gets crazy with us, we will get crazy too..."

Asked what he means by 'get crazy', Gaddafi clarified:

"We will respond. We will make their lives hell, because they are making our lives hell. They will never have peace."

Does he have enough power to do that? He will not get any allies, will he?

Permanent UN Security Council members Russia and China are tonight expected to abstain in a key vote which is expected to authorise the use of force in Libya 'to protect civilians'.

If either of these countries which have both expressed their disagreement with any intervention of any sort in Libya exercise their veto then the reolution would immediately fail. However even if the Russian representative has still expressed serious doubts about implementing any measures, it appears that the earlier decision of the Arab League in support of measures to protect Libyan civilians may have just turned the situation around.

Of course no veto is not enough, the resolution still needs to gain a majority vote and countries such as Germany, Brazil and India have also openly critisized any such initiative. International media are however predicting that even these countries intend to abstain rather than vote against the measure.

He certainly has enough weapons and is crazy enough to try it though of course in such case I doubt EU and Nato amongst others would just stand by and watch. The problem with Gaddafi is not as much what he does but just the threat is enough to cause alarm and financial damage.

Even before this threat, just with the crisis, figures issued today in Malta have revealed that just in February, we have had a 46% decrease in cruiseliner passengers visiting the island. I mean would you fancy a cruise in the med with a madman at the helm of a country who attacks his own people with warplanes?
