On another front, a witness said Gadhafi loyalists have recaptured Zawiya, the city closest to Tripoli that had fallen into opposition hands. The witness, speaking to The Associated Press by phone, said Gadhafi's tanks and fighting vehicles were roaming the city 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Tripoli and firing randomly at homes. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared reprisal.

Gadhafi's regime has been using its air power advantage more each day to check a rebel advance west toward Tripoli on the main highway leading out of the opposition-controlled eastern half of the country. The heavy use of air power underlines the vulnerability of the rebel forces as they attempt to march in open terrain along the Mediterranean coast and could prompt world powers to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to deny Gadhafi that edge.

zeus911: US says it is considering whether to arm the Libyan opposition, but would be "premature" to do so now.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said US officials were seeking to learn as much as they could about Libyan opposition groups, but that offering weapons to opponents of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was only one option on the table.

Hope not, that seems to always blow up in our face. Let the Arab countries arm them, NOT the U.S.

Paldi5: Great news. It looks like things are going well finally. The threat of "no fly zone" and other intervention, behind the scenes discussions with the "rebels" (or whatever you choose to call them) and world wide criticism/pressure from the UNSC seems to have turned Gadaffi's head. If the Libyan "Jamahariya were to put it to a vote, he's out of there.

Time will tell.

With Gaddafi nothing is certain and anything is possible so I'm not putting my hopes up as yet. After all he has 72 hours to think about the offer so he won't likely do any rash moves for now...

In Benghazi, the main city in the rebel-held east of the country, a spokesman for the newly created Interim Governing Council said a man who claimed to represent Gadhafi has made contact with the council to discuss terms for Gadhafi to step down. Mustafa Gheriani told the AP the council could not be certain whether the man was acting on his own initiative or did in fact represent the Libyan leader.

"But our position is clear: No negotiations with the Gadhafi regime," said Gheriani, who declined to say when contact was made or reveal the identity of the purported envoy.

In Zawiya, the witness said electricity, phone and Internet services have all been cut. The witness spoke to the AP after he managed to escape the city through surrounding farmlands and reach a point outside Zawiya where mobile phone coverage was available.

"The city is in ruins," he said. "Some buildings have been entirely destroyed and everyone on the street is shot on sight. There are many wounded but the hospitals are running out of supplies," he said, describing conditions in the city after the regime's counteroffensive on Monday.

Gulf Arab countries joined the calls for a no-fly zone, with the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates saying during a conference of his country's neighbors that the U.N. Security Council should "shoulder its historical responsibility for protecting the Libyan people."

Still, Western military intervention does not seem imminent -- and the warnings may be an attempt to intimidate Gadhafi with words before deeds.

British and French officials said the no-fly resolution was being drawn up as a contingency and it has not been decided whether to put it before the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds veto power and has rejected such a move.

Western officials have said a no-fly zone does not require a U.N. mandate, but they would prefer to have one.

ttom500: The Rebellls will take just any help that can find presently. I watched them trying to load a anti aircraft gun......let us just say....I am glad a Libyan helo was not making an attack run on them at the time.

But NATO and the US have been in 'discussions' on providing aid and a no fly zone....and other military options.

I have said this other threads....but will say it one time.

We don't what Qdaffi has. But he has a lot of money. And money on the black arms market can get you about anything. His foreign minister is saying alQeada is aiding the Rebells. I don't buy that a bit. Qdaffi is the one with the alQeada connections. Farrer in Blood Stones....said Qdaffi let alQeada agents train at his camp.

So?

NATO or the US goes into Libya...for what ever military reason is an excuse for Qdaffi to fund alQeada in some major attack on the west.

BINGO!

NATO Troops Already in Libya?

Here’s something interesting. Early in the week we heard Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying a no-fly zone over Libya was being actively considered. Her comments were followed by CNO Adm. Gary Roughead said the Navy is ready to help enforce a no-fly zone should the order be given. Then yesterday, numerous reports came out saying the White House is trying to downplay the potential of a military intervention in Libya. Defense Secretary Robert Gates even warned against “loose talk” on the matter.

While he urged caution, Gates said all options are still on the table. Now, Janes is reporting that a NATO team might be in Libya investigating the feasibility of setting up a no-fly zone:

A NATO team mostly comprising US personnel has been deployed to eastern Libya to determine whether a no-fly zone could be imposed in response to the crackdown by Colonel Moammar Ghadaffi against reform-minded protestors, Jane’s understands from international sources.

Experts in airlift and command-and-control operations based at NATO headquarters in Brussels were dispatched on 27 February, to search for possible radar sites to aid the enforcement of any possible no-fly zone over Libyan airspace and to liaise with officers from Libyan military units that have abandoned the 41-year-old regime, the source told Jane’s on 28 February.

In response to: Six or seven SAS soldiers, who were reportedly carrying passports from four different countries as well as guns and ammunition, were rounded up and claimed they were unarmed over the weekend.

They were then searched by rebel soldiers after their helicopter landed and promptly detained. The soldiers were accompanied by a mid-ranking MI6 officer, according to reports, when they were put down near the town of Khandra.

There was also a small contingent of Dutch Marines who supposedly tried to supervise the evacuation of foreign nationals; they too were detained.

In both cases they were NOT detained by pro-Gaddafi forces, but by anti-Gaddafi rebels.
One rebel-commander put it this way- just a few days ago:
"Let the Americans look after their own people and their own problems- they have no business around here"

The politicians may bend over at the moment trying to present the above incidents as 'misunderstandings'- frankly I don't care.
The Libyans began an uprising against their government- then they should finish what they have begun.
If they got a problem with Gaddafi's aircraft- let their Anti-aircraft-gunners learn to use their guns.
If they can't manage to do that- then they have a right to die on their feet rather than living on their knees.

ANYONE interferring in that place is going to turn the wishes of the people in that entire region into a farce.
If you don't believe that- look at the clown who invitet the Normans into Ireland: He asked for their help.

And they liked the climate here soooo much- they decided to stay on for the next 700 years...

You've got it wrong there Hekamaat, only the British group was captured by rebel forces, the 3 Dutch helicopter crew were caught by pro-Gaddafi troops as they were close to Sirte which is still in Gaddafi's hands.

In fact a delegation of senior Dutch diplomats and military officers is in Malta right now to negotiate their release. So far it is not clear if the diplomats will visit Tripoli, or whether they will attempt to negotiate from Malta with assistance from local authorities.

The British troupe, now released are currently in Malta having arrived yesterday afternoon on board the HMS Cumberland.

Yep- I got that wrong. But that doesn't change the remainder of what I wrote.
Anyone interfering will turn those people's wishes and aspirations into muck: They will always be accused of being controlled by outside forces.

I know that is true, especially allowing the people to ON their victory and freedom to choose...I just hope they can....I hope they have the strength and the resources to hold out.

In the meantime we watch as Gadaffi has more of his people slaughtered and is apparently gaining ground on what was once claimed by the anti-Gadaffi. One little boat out in those waters a few weeks ago....might have made a difference...dunno I just hate these counsels and committees and meeting that yield no results...Everybody sitting around and no one will get off the pot...

Apparently he did show up at the hotel where most foreign media are but he left without the promised conference. Seems he only met with Turkish and French reporters privately.

Representatives of Libya's rebel leadership went to the European Parliament today with a demand to be recognised as "legitimate" and an invitation to the West to impose a no-fly zone.

Mahmud Gebril, 58, Libya's former planning minister and a founding member of the provisional national council, said that "recognising an alternative, legitimate body, where a national consensus was gained for that body, is the most effective political reaction the EU can take."

Their "number one" political demand was joined by pleas for economic, humanitarian and medical aid as well as military support.

Alongside Ali al-Essawi, 45, former ambassador to India, Gebril was invited to the parliament by former Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, who heads the assembly's liberal group.

Calling for "military assistance without direct military intervention," Gebril said: "Empowering the people to continue their armed struggles against Gaddafi can be done by different means."

He underlined that a no-fly zone is one of them, while also asking for urgent medical aid, saying the capacity of Libyan hospitals is way, way less than the demand for immediate treatment.

The French government opened the way for the two leaders to come to France and a meeting with French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe is planned for Wednesday, Verhofstadt said.
