to add something which is not in the news... according to sources I have the "USS Kearsarge" and the "USS Ponce" have departed from Souda base in Crete around 3 days ago. According to my calculations that would make them approximately 1 to 2 days from Benghazi and 2 to 3 days away from Malta. Their positioning in proximity to Libyan waters may be crucial to an eventual implementation of a no-fly zone.
Also the Korean Destroyer "Choi Young" left Malta yesterday morning while the "HMS Cumberland" is still docked at Valletta.
In addition to these, known ships in the area include the "HMS York", the German Navy Frigates "Rheinland Pfalz" and "Bremen", the French Navy Destroyer "Tourville" amongst other minor supply vessels. Contrary to earlier speculation the aircraft carrier "USS Enterprise" did not join the other 2 US vessels and remains on standby in the Red Sea.

Hi Zeus...
You are thinking this is a strategy of sorts for just in case. ?
Well contrary to others not getting anything done, Hillary speech the other day apparently got a few channels tuning in to what was going on around the world, beside (Hollywood) if u will, so we have CNN puttin on the Ritz. She pretty much shamed the new media being more concern with ratings and Americans for preferring to watch Charlie Sheen than to concern themselves with the massacre that was happening in Libya... Of course speculation is out the window, would of, could of, should of, but at least they r shaking some bushes....I live in an Army Base town and some r saying possible NO Fly Zone may be about to take place.. Thanks zeus for keeping us up on the latest...ur contribution to Libya's victims of Gadaffi is outstanding.

Well the main strategy here is in delaying the political decision of applying a no-fly zone till logistical support is in place to realistically handle it. Failing ships in the area (the Kearsarge has Harriers on board), the nearest military base is Sigonella in Sicily. A no-fly zone means you have to be close enough to intercept a jet soon after take off so land based craft may not be so effective. That said most ships there are more as a deterrent at this point and on 'stand by' should the guys on top decide to take any action.
Buffy327: I know that is true, especially allowing the people to ON their victory and freedom to choose...I just hope they can....I hope they have the strength and the resources to hold out.
In the meantime we watch as Gadaffi has more of his people slaughtered and is apparently gaining ground on what was once claimed by the anti-Gadaffi. One little boat out in those waters a few weeks ago....might have made a difference... I just hate these counsels and committees and meeting that yield no results...Everybody sitting around and no one will get off the pot...

Thanks Buffy! Off to some shut-eye now as it's late and tomorrow is off to work...
What if the power and decision makers have instead of a no fly zone....a naval blockade of Libya in mind? Most all of Libya cities, population and oil facilities is located on the Med coastline. That is were this being fought and decided. Not in the desert deep inside Libya.
If they place a blockade into place.....they can confiscate Qdaffi out flowing oil shippments. Those African merc need to get paid. Cut Qdaffi's flow of funds and payments....and soon they head home.
The Libyan Navy is not near as dangerous as its Air Force. A blockade would still let the Libyan decide this themselves. But with Qdaffi's violation of human rights....in supressing the protests....the UN would recongize and approve a blockade.
Not only that. It is easy for those ship to control the airspace above them. All have advanced radars and anti air craft defense missiles. If they get with 25 miles of the coast...they can even a enforce a coastal no fly zone on those coastal cities.
If they do....Qdaffi will find ways to engage them. He has to. Those oil shipment have to got thru. But you can layer a blockagde deep into the med .....were his Navy and Air Force cannot reach.
Rebels set demands for Gaddafi exit Head of Libyan rebels tells Al Jazeera Gaddafi "will not be pursued" if he quits within 72 hours and ends the fighting. Last Modified: 08 Mar 2011 19:00 GMT
Rebels will not pursue Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi over crimes they say he has committed if he steps down from his post in the next 72 hours, the head of the rebel National Libyan Council has told Al Jazeera.
"If he leaves Libya immediately, during 72 hours, and stops the bombardment, we as Libyans will step back from pursuing him for crimes," Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the opposition National Council, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
He said the deadline would not be extended beyond 72 hours.
"Based on our love for our country we have proposed to the indirect negotiators that a solution can be reached," Jalil told Al Jazeera.
"Conditions are that firstly he stops all combat in the fields, secondly that his departure is within 72 hours; thirdly we may waive our right of domestic prosecution ... for the crimes of oppression, persecution, starvation and massacres.
"We will have to wait and see what the regime's response is."
Libyan state television on Tuesday denied reports that the Libyan leader tried to strike a deal with opposition forces seeking his removal. An official from the Libyan foreign ministry described the reports as "absolute nonsense".
However, a spokesman for the opposition National Council in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi confirmed that a representative had sought to negotiate Gaddafi's exit.
Gaddafi was reported to have sent a representative to Benghazi on Sunday night to discuss a conditional plan to step down, Al Jazeera learned. The offer was provided on the condition that Gaddafi would be able to keep his assets and avoid prosecution.
The Libyan leader is said to be willing to step down in return for having war crimes charges against him dropped and a guaranteed safe exit for him and his family. He also reportedly wants guarantees from the UN that he will be allowed to keep his money.
The US responded to the alleged proposal by rejecting any amnesty for Gaddafi.
"Any departure from Libya does not exempt Mr Gaddafi or his family from any responsibility and accountability for what has occurred," PJ Crowley, spokesman for the White House, said on Tuesday.
Hoda Abdel-Hamid, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Benghazi, said she was hearing conflicting accounts of what happened.
"The head of the opposition National Council says there were indirect talks with people from Tripoli, who were given the green light from the regime," she said. "But the spokesman for the National Council denies any of that."
Abdel Hafiz Ghoga said talks with Gaddafi were not taking place.
"Our demands are as clear as the revolution. We are not negotiating at all," he said.
"We have appealed to the United Nations to impose a no fly zone in Libya to protect our families and to prevent any aircraft attacks like the ones you are hearing about."
Our correspondent said there was no optimism in Benghazi following news of the proposed deal.
"There is no more euphoria of a revolution," she said.
"People are worried it will move towards civil war which will continue for months on end. There is a realisation that there is no institution in this country - that you have to avoid chaos.
"It's a matter of waiting and seeing. Military commanders are continuing on their mission to get military structure to the group of volunteers who are very disorganised."
AFP - Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has said that any decision to impose a no-fly zone over Libya should be taken by the United Nations and "not the United States".
"I think it's very important that it is not a US-led effort because this comes from the people of Libya themselves," she said.
"We think it is important that the United Nations make that decision. This doesn't come from the outside. This doesn't come from some Western power or some Gulf country saying: 'This is what you should do.'"
Well Yea, Just one little boat with USS emblems, might have said, we r here in your corner..We hear U, U go Boys. Sometimes all u need to go on is knowing that someone hears u, like a friend, just knowing they r there and that they care.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi appeared on state television yesterday, saying that "misguided and mad groups" are responsible for the continued violence in the country. He is also quoted as repeating his former accusation that the rebels have been brainwashed by al-Qaeda.
Meanwhile according to AP, President Barack Obama's senior advisers are meeting today to outline possible steps that could be used to pressure Gaddafi to halt the violence against his people and give up power. While facing the sternest test yet of his philosophy of humanitarian intervention to prevent atrocities against civilians, Gaddafi's brutal suppression of protests and crackdown on opponents may fall short of Obama's criteria for military action.
IT'S LIBYAN'S INTERNAL MATTER. BUT USA-UK & SOME COUNTRIES ARE VERY INTERESTED FOR THIS MATTER. BUT WHY ? OIL OWN MACHINE. PLEASE DON'T OPEN NEW WAR FRONT. MUCH PEOPLE'S KNOW THIS COUNTRIES ARE WARMONGER. hossain_monowar
In the interview Gaddafi released yesterday to Turkey's state-run TRT Turk television, he is quoted as saying that Libyans will fight if a no-fly zone is imposed by Western nations.
Gaddafi described that such a move would lead Libyans to understand the foreigners' real aims were to seize their oil and to take their freedoms away, saying that if that happens "Libyans will take up arms and fight.".

Three Gaddafi family planes are reported to have left Tripoli earlier:
Three aircraft normally used by the Gaddafi family have taken off from Tripoli but their destination is unknown, according to international media reports. Neither is it known if the planes are carrying any passengers, or who they may be.
AFP said one of the aircraft had crossed Greek airspace over Crete and was now heading for Cairo. "A private plane of Gaddafi has crossed Greek airspace en route to Egypt," the ministry source told AFP, adding: "We do not know who is on board."
A Greek air force source said the plane was a Libyan Airlines Falcon 900 that normally carries VIPs, though the pilot denied that dignitaries were on board.
Unconfirmed reports state that the other 2 flights may be directed towards Vienna and Athens respectively.
Forces loyal to Col Gaddafi have been continuing a major offensive in the western city of Zawiya. The government has cut communication and journalists are not allowed to visit the area but there are reports of heavy artillery being used as more tanks move in. There are also reports of more shelling in the oil port of Ras Lanuf.

Abdelrahman al-Zawi, the Libyan deputy defence minister, has arrived in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, flying on a private jet. Reports say he is carrying a message from Gaddafi but we cannot confirm which officials he's going to meet. Newspaper Al-Ahram suggests he's to meet the military council while other sources say he'll meet Amr Moussa, head of the Arab league.
