zeus911: Sky News reports that "the US military is moving naval and air forces into position around Libya, the Pentagon says, as Western countries weigh possible intervention against Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

'We have planners working various contingency plans, and I think it's safe to say as part of that we're repositioning forces to provide for that flexibility once decisions are made,' Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan told reporters.

The redeployment of 'naval and air forces' would give US President Barack Obama a range of options in the crisis, said Lapan, without specifying what ships and aircraft had been given orders or what potential action was under consideration."

In reality US forces are nowhere nearer Libya at this point then they were at the start of this crisis. The nearest warship is the "USS Enterprise", which is currently in the Red Sea, as well as the amphibious ship the "USS Kearsarge", which has a fleet of helicopters and about 2,000 Marines on board. I'm no marine expert but I would calculate that for these vessels to reach Libyan waters we're talking a 4 to 5 days minimum, and that depends on where excatly they are at this moment.

But it's a welcome decision... U.S. military presence is required here if not for anything else, as a deterrent and as moral support to EU Forces.

It takes a Aircraft carrier 5 miles to stop dead in the water and do a U turn. The further Enterprise sails down the Red Sea, the longer it will take to get back.

We have two local sherrifs here in Florida ready and willing to act as moral support to all EU forces in Libya. Just have NATO command give the order....they will send free emails cards to Qdaffi and his sons.....telling them that they all are jerks....and that the British, Dutch, Spanish, Germans and French are coming.

Just my two cents worth, fellows. With the long history between Italy and Libya.....I would leave the Italians home on this one.

Al Jazeera reports on eyewitness accounts from a doctor in Tripoli about pro-Gaddafi militia members are acting as security guards at the capital's hospitals, but, rather than protecting doctors, they are harrassing them, and have been "taking away" the bodies of those killed in violence, while also forbidding doctors from taking pictures of their wounds.

Alia (not her real name), a doctor in the capital, said a patient was brought into her hospital yesterday with a gunshot wound to his chest. He expired after ten minutes, and his body was taken away by armed men wearing the characteristic green armband of pro-Gaddafi supporters.

"When they die, they don't let people come near them, they don't want people taking pictures/videos," Alia said.

The pro-Gaddafi militiamen also "come in with the patient into the resuscitation room, [making it] uncomfortable for doctors to work".

They arrest any doctors found trying to take pictures of the dead or wounded, though they do not stop them from treating patients.

Alia also alleged that the militiamen give 500 Libyan dinars to anyone who "snitches" on others, and said she was told on by a nurse recently. This prompted a man with a wearing a "green flag" to come into the room "with a firearm in his hand", wanting to confiscate her and another doctor's phones.

The two were only saved because the administrative staff of the hospital stood by them and insisted that there was nothing on the phones.

Alia also complained about doctors being too afraid to come to work. She mentioned at least four more casualties coming in on the night that the dead patient's body was taken away.

Both sherrifs have two deputies each....they remind you much of Barney Fife...equipped with one bullet each for their 38 Police Specials. They will each send one deputy to EU effort. Keeping the other there for local enforcement duties. They are drawing lots now, to see who goes.

Another update on Naval movements:

Local authorities haven't said anything yet but I have information that the "HMS Cumberland" has already left port once again after arriving here this morning with around 200 evacuees - destination Benghazi.

The "FS Tourville" is still hanging around - seems like the French have taken a liking to the local girls...

News of a another German Navy Frigate, coming over in a couple of days. The vessel is to join the frigates "Bremen", and "Rheinland Pfalz" and the supply ship "Berlin" already in this area and two of which had entered the Grand Harbour last week.

Finally the Korean Destroyer "Choi Young" is reported to be arriving in a few days.

Zeus, thanks for the posts. One question, and it´s a question some of my adult students have been asking themselves. Do you think it´s rather strange that all the unrest has happened virtually at the same time? I mean Tunisia, Egypt, Libya???? And all very quickly. People revolutions in the past have gone on for years before being resolved.

Damned if u do and damned if u don't...If we went in everybody says we did it for the OIL....or profit....like our former President...

I am the biggest bleeding heart in American and I wanted him there....lots earlier....but frankly, and I am sure there will be a Committee appointed to Investigate the matter. You can bet he was advised by commanders of the arms forces on much of what has happened...

I am a little tired of the president bashing....He may not be your choice of presidents and quite frankly he had made lots of mistakes, but IMHO so has the prior President. U don't have to respect the man, but surly u should to respect the office..NOT EVERY FRIGGIN THING THAT GOES WRONG IN THE WORLD IS THE FAULT OF THE THE USA PRESIDENT. OMG LET IT GO.
