Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

The definition I could find is: Engaged to be married. n. A person to whom one is engaged to be married.
But then what do we know about the past. Back then the world was flat.

I think Mary (Mariam is the jewish version of Mary) did have a thing with "somebody". Joseph was probably a nice guy and tried to spare her the shame or whatever social consequences she would have had to endure if he had dumped her. So he took her pregnant and all.
Having an extra- or pre-marital fling and a resulting pregnancy may not have been acceptable at the time, but these things happen as much today as they did back then regardless which rules society imposes.
All the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding the supposed 'virginity' of Mary has been the cause of untold misery for numerous young catholic girls down the years when it was considered the worst possible 'sin' to get pregnant.....any girl who dared to get pregnant outside marriage was banished from her home and put into some awful institution (e.g. Magdelan Laundries in Ireland) and their babies taken away from them.....i remember my grandmother saying that even after a married woman had a baby they were supposed to go to a priest to get 'churched' which, supposedly made them clean and pure again and then and only then could they resume their duty of producing more children.....
