1957 Morris Oxford Farina ... at the school car club!
After weeks of trying to make the thing run we finally got it started with a push going forward.
H o w e v e r ... heading backwards I executed an unintended J turn, collided with a milk churn and catapulted a kid (who decided it would be fun to ride on the boot lid) through the school kitchen door where (I'm told ) he landed on a milk churn upon which he rocketed through the kitchen, under the batwing swing doors and down through the dining room ...
The school caretaker was kind enough to find me during the pm break and suggest that 'handing myself in to TC (head) would be less painful than waiting for the summons next morning!
I didn't get a car until I got a job after high school graduation. I saved and saved and finally bought this beauty. This is the same color of my first car.
bigjb62: When I was 10 I drove a Dodge van with a 3 on the tree a few times around a ranch I lived at one summer. I suppose that was legal. But when I was 12 I would sometimes drive my drunk neighbor around Phoenix in his Chevy Chevette which had a tendency to overheat and stop running until it cooled down. It did that one night and when I pulled over a cop pulled in behind us with his light flashing. I thought I was busted but the cop just asked what was wrong? I said the car overheated and he got back into his car and left. Illegal? Yup.
I went to Canada with a friend of the family when I was 17. His name was August but everybody called him Monunc. He was like a father to me. We were in Montreal and he went for a walk to one of his friends house. I had the keys and the car, a green 1950 Dodge Coronet with Fluid Drive was parked at the curb. The temptation was too great and I decided to drive the car around the block. I got in, started it up, and pulled away from the curb. I got to the end of the and here comes Monunc walking toward me. Man I thought, I suck as a car thief. I stopped at the corner and Monunc hopped into the passenger side. I said I figured you'd be coming so I decided to go and pick you up. I was a much better liar than a car thief. I made a right and drove around the block. There was a double parked car around the block and I apparently got so close to it that Monunc blurted out My God you could split a cigarette on this side. Thank goodness I didn't sideswipe the parked car. A year or so after that I wound up buying the car from him. Man I loved that car.

Great thread and provoked equally great memories!
It wasn't my first car I drove. That memory is long gone. But here is the oldest.
At that time I was a kid and we would go up to a farm where a friend's dad had stocked his old barns with mostly decrepit fire trucks and this Oldsmobile. His showed its 50 years of age, so it was not so shiny. Tillers are fine up to about 5 mph.
galrads: I was fifteen when My older brother let me drive his 1963 chevy Impala SS convertible
1963 Rambler Ambassador--I was allowed a conditional license from farm to town, then got a permit, then a real license. So, not exactly "illegal". First car I bought was a 1966 Ford Mustang. wish i still had it..........
