If you get a partner with a hearing impairment, would you learn how to do proper sign language or would you just make do pointing at the fridge/washing machine etc.?

I already did a course in British Sign Language. Have level 2 which is fairly basic. It was quite a few years ago and I've forgotten most of it for lack of practice. I used to be able to have a basic conversation and describe people, places, talk about feelings, animals, the weather, the house, family, etc.. Everyday stuff. Still have all my notes, but I'd have to have a refresher course ...

I'd point at the wheelie bin when it needs to be taken out. Point to the toilet when it needs to be cleaned, etc.
Palmfrond: it may be the true universal language but different hands may have different dialects
I was trully disappointed to find out that there are different 'sign language' lineages within same countries. With different signs for tbe same tbings And also each country has their own... There is no 'universal' sign language

How do you get a partner with hearing impairment, if you didn't manage to communicate from the very start?
And yes, if I wanted to maintain the relationship, I would learn sign language.

Yeah, we have our own sign language here, which differs from BSL.

You can of course communicate through Emails and Text messaging etc, but actually meeting will require some other way ... either through lip reading and / or sign language.

Honestly, if I were deaf, I would try to find a mate that was also deaf, or already knew sign language. I think it would be too much of a challenge, if one did not know already know sign language...To me, it would be like building a square house, on top of a round foundation... JMO...
