It is part of my job but during time in the middle east I pulled two boys with bullet wounds out of firing range...one later died but the other has recovered and I think of him often.
My brother pulled two kids from a car that was on fire...they were playing with a lighter and their parents were in a neighbours house visiting friends...the kids both died and he ended up with third degree burns but the worst part is it really still gets to him...he never recovered emotionally from not saving them and witnessing them perish in front of him.

Even when it is part of your job it never gets easier.... All you can do is remind yourself that you did the best job you possibly could and it is not your decision to make in the end...being surrounded by death daily does remind me how precious my own life is..
Rejoice at how beautiful your heart must be to care for others..
A buddy and I were hanging out at a girl's house one evening in the Summer time. We were all about age 17, just standing out in the yard and talking. A pickup truck, repeatedly cruised by very slowly. Our girlfriend commented on how she didn't recognize the truck from the neighborhood.
I assumed that the driver was lost. So, when the vehicle passed the next time, I walked over to offer asisstance. The dark tinted window rolled down, and I could see a woman in the passenger seat holding her face in her hands and sobbing. The driver, a male in his thirties pointed a .357 at my face and said, "Don't try to be a hero pal!"
My gut went cold, and my mind and body just sort of froze. That lady might have needed help, and I don't know what happened to her before or after that. I just know that at that moment, I found myself unable to do anything...I just froze.

diogenes: Here's a freaky story:

You got pretty close to becoming a victim yourself....
bodleing: I dont mean as part of your job, doctor, nurse or such.
I mean have ever found yourself looking into the eyes of someone who needs you to save thier life?
Did you succeed?
To answer your question, no: I have never tried to save a life. HOWEVER, I have been the recipient of the EFFORTS to save a life. It was 3.5 years ago, and my best friend, her daughter, and my ex-husband all "conspired" to save MY life, does that count??
"In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade; and he carried the reminder, of every bloke that laid him down, or clept him 'til he cried out, in his anger and his shame: I am leaving, I am leaving, But the fighter still remains!"
