Checkers101: I think government is the biggest threat to both our freedom and security
Well I agree they are the biggest threat to freedom. People in power will take whatever power the people give them and use every excuse and propaganda to to increase that power if they are allowed. It has happened time and time again in history. But for some reason people keep falling for it.

Checkers101: Would you trade freedom for security? I know this sounds like a silly question but think about it.
Isn't that what we have done? I added the option of "depends how great the threat is" and to that I would ad, no one has ever been killed by a threat.
You haven't been specific about which freedoms, or securities you're referring to in your OP.
I'm assuming you're referring to something to do with the current political climate in America, but it could just as easily be applied to the historical instution of marriage.
You don't have to read much Jane Austen to realise that in a climate where women were deprived of certain educations, the right to work to be independent, adequate childcare, or a welfare system, many women were forced to accept financially 'prudent' marriages, rather than ones based upon other compatibilities. This wasn't so very different 50 years ago.
If this analogy is applied to the current political climate, perhaps it doesn't seem a silly question at all. Perhaps it can open up a differnet level of understanding of power imbalances, inequality, psychological manipulations and human rights.

I don't plan on ever reading any Jane Austen.
I think you knew very well what I was talking about.
Why is it that everything with you has to have a feminist spin to it?

Ha! I was agreeing with you and you're dismissive.
Maybe I relate to things from a woman's perspective because...err...ummm...I'm a woman...?
The question perhaps should be, why do have a problem with me being a woman and having a woman's perspective?
One of my daughter's English teachers once said to me that girls tend to write stories for their audience, as boys tend to write stories for themselves. He was referring to how boys retain essential information in their heads, whilst girls generally are more effective communcators, providing all the information necessary for others to comprehend the tale and respond.
By missing out esential information, you leave the reader in a position to have to assume your full meaning, or ask. I did both and instead of clarifying, you complain because I don't know exactly what's going on inside your head. This missing out of essential information could also be used as an analogy for political machinations, so how much are you unconsciously supporting the very system you appear to object to with your own behavioural patterns?
I'm currently re-reading Pride and Prejudic, in which Austen appears to accurately reproduce a character (Mr.Collins) with autistic spectrum traits. Presumably, autism wasn't a well known phenomenon back then, which makes her somewhat astute and consistent in her observations of the human dynamic as well as being an effective communicator. I would question why you might be scared of that. What power do you think you might not be able to hold onto by becoming a more effective social observer, analyst and communicator?
Obstinance_Works: Where do you think your "confident" and "independent" women will be after the great sacking of the cubicle farms and the doing away with makework credentials? On benefits? There won't be any(or very much of them). On the game? possibly. Married? Most certainly if she can get a man to commit.
If what you do for a living is a drain upon civilisation then don't expect it to last through these times(unless you're an elite banker or an established politician). The women over the last years fifty have moved from extracting resources from hubby to expropriating funds from the common kitty/foreign creditor. The coming years will be a correction of this. And women will be reserved for education, healthcare and streetwalking jobs just like in the good old days of civilisation.
No, because no one can deprive me from my free spirit and mind. Everyone needs security, everyone has a certain role in the society, family or relationship and every attempt to change it brings confusion and insecurity. I am a woman and my main role is to be a mother and stand by my man. It doesn't mean that I can't be professional or I have no say in making decisions or that I have traded my freedom.

yeah right! What happen, can't stand competition from Females in your Job?
Is the general public a BABY now that they need a 'security blanket' provided by Big Brother? Babies are always dependent on another for their safety, care & well-being.
Freedom, however, is for ADULTS who take responsibility for their own actions & don't rely on others to take care of them; clean up their mistakes; or make their decisions for them.
Freedom & security are not even on the same page. It's like trading oxygen for carbon monoxide, respectively. (Is everyone ready for the gas chambers?)
i have neither... freedom: i have never felt complete freedom...last time i looked there were laws that governed my behavior and choices. security: it's an illusion, fleeting at best
