I am armed, and former Blackwatch and PPCLI....but no matter....this is in regards to the police force. So? If a weapon is used in the commission of a crime in the UK, a call must go out for special para-military forces? Here in the "colonies" it takes a LOT of screening and training to be allowed a weapon, but they are granted, and I will be honest with you, it provides me with a degree of comfort and security. Then again....my home province is kn own to own several million weapons,,,,and I live right next door to the USA - those anti-gun pacifists!

Okay colonial Father....why do you not wish to see your protectorate armed? Mortar over the Rockies? The question is...you wish your basic police force to be with whistles or weapons...those assigned to protect the populace>

Another persons life means more to us in England than it does in America, we're less egotistical and better at self-control(by no coincidence we're also slimmer despite having broadly similar shops and diet). We're much more mature - Donald Trump is the Brexit for 7 year olds - and it's right to consider the difference in human raw material. Compare the conduct of British versus American troops in the middle east for example. Our culture isn't as self-important and obnoxious as America, other people are just as important as we are(or at least somewhere in the same ballpark).

The average mental age in America is around 17, in Britain we're talking more the mid-20s. If our police were armed it would not be as dangerous as doing the same thing in a nation of children.

I didn't argue with him then and I'm not going to argue with him now, for the simple reason that tasers have been so much abused and I'd not be willing to put LETHAL weapons in the hands of those who continue to prove that they don't have the self discipline to NOT use them.

I guess you're from a different era Moose and you have my respect.

An era when to be SELECTED for an officer's role was an indication of the high level of ethic and conduct that was expected from a candidate in that era. A time when far more failed than were ever accepted ?

Now, the police (here UK / USA and many other places) have let themselves down by their own misconduct so many times over so many decades that they no longer are regarded by the higher echelons of of our youth as a 'respectable' career choice ... so they keep on lowering the physical and educational criteria just to fill uniform and 'keep the numbers up'

It's plainly many are 'in the force' for quite the wrong reason ... ie related to the use of 'force' rather than the delivery of community 'service

If you were to read 'Into the Forest' written by former NZ police officer and later National MP Ross Meurant I suspect you might see how things changed!
