A presidency heading for a fiscal train wreck
By Nouriel Roubini

Published: October 28 2010 20:48 | Last updated: October 28 2010 20:48

What has been the fiscal performance of President Barack Obama? He inherited the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, as well as a budget deficit that – after much needed bail-outs and a series of reckless tax cuts – was already close to $1,000bn. His stimulus package, together with a backstop of the financial system, low rates and quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve, prevented another depression. Mr Obama also deserves credit that the US, alone among advanced economies, currently supports a “growth now”, rather than an “austerity now” path.

The Obama administration did the right thing early, and avoided another depression. He is still doing the right thing now in pointing out the risks of early austerity. And he is limited by an unco-operative Republican party trapped in a belief in voodoo economics, the economic equivalent of creationism. Even so, he and his party have been unwilling to tackle long-term entitlement spending. Two years in, and this means the US remains on an unsustainable fiscal course.

The result will soon be the worst of all worlds: neither short-term stimulus nor medium-term fiscal sustainability. Fiscally the only light at the end of the tunnel may be that which causes the upcoming crisis. With two years of gridlock in prospect, it will fall to the next president in 2013 – whoever he or she may be – to start fixing America’s fiscal mess. Whether that is Mr Obama or not, that he may leave this challenge may become the worst of his legacy.

Guess who made everyone's nasty list during the mid term Dude?

Both DEMs and REPs are taking swipes at them.

China.

Some quotes;

From John Boehner (R) on President Obama and house leader Pelosi for making "a stimulus that shipped jobs overseas to China, instead of making jobs here".

From Barbara Boxer (D) on Carly Fiorina for "making jobs in Shanghia instead of San Jose."

Harry Reid (D) on Sharon Angle "a foreign worker best friend for supporting tax breaks so job can be shipped to China and India."

So both side are saying the other is shipping job to China. A majority of American see job loss to China as a major economic issue. 53% said free trade agreement have hurt. 61% in the Tea party feel that.

The House voted 348 to 79 to increase tariffs on China. "Buy American"
provisions in legislation wide bi partisan support.

Yet President Obama is not talking 'buy American' or 'talking tariffs on China products'. Instead he is talking currency revaluation. The country is moving to isolationism......and the President has not seen it yet.

If you remember I said we should be going to isolationism back in our first blogs, in the 2008.

The American people want protectionism. They see it as the way to protect their jobs and improve the economy. Till Obama does that, his poll numbers will fall.

Let us not go there, Conrad. You know tieing the DEMs to GWB's final years, is like saying you have the Holy Grail and lost it. GWB was totally at fault and responsible for those final years of the US economy. They just sat in the House and Senate and did not vote on the funding bills. They were totally innocent by standers to the REP driving the car into the ditch.

They did not even reach across from the back seat to grap the steering wheel as the car slide off the road. Or try to get GWB to slow down as he hit the icy patch on the road. DEM had nothing to do with the economic crisis of 2008.

Then again as one thinks about this.....since the DEM made so little to keep the car from going into the ditch. Why should we trust them to have the ability to get the car out of the ditch?grin

Liberal are very selective about who can support Obama. Unless you a peti degree from a major University....and a wallet with big bucks...you don't get to part of the club.

You have heard of the old boys club. Well this is Obama club. It is the new political machine from Chicago. That bastion of fair politics and equal opportunity for the chosen few.

Rob Emaneul liked it so well there, he took a demotion from the White House and Federal Gov't....a steady pay check....to make a run for a
local gov't mayor job....and maybe pay check.

Just remember when you go to the polls in 2012.....that these standards apply to voting for Obama. If you are not part of the Obama club....feel free to vote REP or Tea Party.

Communism and Capitolism in the same baliwik? You have smorgass borge then. Or socialism. Which is the real push to keep Presidnet Obama in power after 2012.

We will see so many foreign socialist groups coming to his support that we will lose track of their three letter socialist party identifiers.

He has been outed Dude. The American people see him for what he is.
He snuck into the Presidency, telling people he was a center road politician. But we dispelled that in the Obama thread earlier.

Then Obamacare......and the country saw the real President Obama. They saw the real DEM party. That was no longer American in form, but was a
socislist machine in the making. 212 time he ideologues addressed on Obamacare. That is so much what Stalin use to do.....he would just harp and harp and harp on a issue of the state.

The mid term is a referredum on what American saw.

Ohio is going REP. Now Ohio is normally a DEM state. But it is going REP big time. Obama has been there more time than I cna count. He needs it for the 2012. But Ohio is in midwest and its state that loves America....and it is rejecting Obama.

Heck you have CA. The most liberal state in the country. And you got 50/50 races for the Senate and Governor office.

Then you have Harry Reid....losing to a political nobody.

Florida....is so REP now, you cannot believe it. Rubio could win a one man race here without trying. A three man race, he is a given.

You need to see it. The mid term vote is against President Obama and his agenda. That is why his own party fled from him.
