RE: Will technology kill the economy?

One area may die out while another is created. Much like handhelds are killing the PC. But I think many people will be willing to pay for real meet, like they pay premium price for the privilege to eat organic.

And if we became vegetarians we would kill this future technology as well :-)

Yeah, chocolate... another article I read a years or so ago said it is the antioxidant in the chocolate that helps, but you don't get it in processed cocoa (ie chocolate), you need the organic cocoa powder. It is very powerful to clean your arteries, but can you handle the constipation it causes? laugh

I have found the article about depression, it came from Swanson:

"In a year, 13 to 14 million people experience a depressive disorder. In fact, 16% of all adults will experience depression at some age. Women experience depression twice as much as men and about six million elderly people suffer from depression. The statistics go on and on. Depression is a serious issue in the United States.

The Mayo Clinic defines depression as a medical illness that involves the mind and body. "Also called major depression, major depressive disorder and clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave," the Mayo Clinic states. "Depression can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and depression may make you feel as if life isn’t worth living. More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply ‘snap out’ of. Depression is a chronic illness that usually requires long-term treatment, like diabetes or high blood pressure."

Some of the signs of depression include feelings of sadness or unhappiness; irritability or frustration; loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities; changes in appetite; agitation or restlessness; slowed thinking, speaking or body movements; indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentration; fatigue, tiredness and loss of energy.

That brings us to a group of researchers in Italy who have reported some success in dealing with the symptoms of depression in elderly women by supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids. While much work still needs to be done, there is progress being made. See my first report to find out the details about this new study."

Well, fish oil must be great, even if regulatory bodies don't accept that there is sufficient evidence. However, the Eskimos that live on fish don't get heart problems, and that's all the evidence I need for myself laugh

RE: Depression' The Reasons.

I may add my two cents worth. Not long ago I read an article that suggested that one of the Omega oils may help you to avoid it. I need to try to dig out the article. But if you take flex seed oil you have all three oils.

Not all my posts are about me. You have missed the explanation of the purpose of the posts, which was to challenge people to think deep. Some people will resonate with my posts, others will never. That is expected. Some will soul search, others will avoid it at all costs.

Well, lots of promises didn't materialise.

I do not want to be a stranger, but a challenger. Most of the forum threads are boring and meaningless. I want to challenge people to reach their deepest feelings. I want them to reflect on themselves, the "I", and not the "him" or "her". Self examination can be greatly edifying...

The conquerors

No, it is not the pain and self blame, no. I feel much relaxed since moving out, for it was way too stressful there. Everybody thinks I wrote about me, but I just wanted us to take a deep voyage into our own hearts. Do a self-examination, not a self-blame.

Solomon said,
"Catch the foxes for us, The little foxes that are ruining the vineyards, While our vineyards are in blossom."

I can say, through my experience, this is true. We were way too concerned about the big differences and ignored the little annoyances. Well, I can only speak for myself here. It was the small things that led to increased tension and the tension led to bigger problems as the tensions built up resistance as I protested for being ignored. I felt everyone else was more important for her. I often complained that I wasn't loved. I was not treated as a partner in life, but rather, as an extension of her to achieve what she wanted. Why else would I be needed? I was just tolerated as a necessity, regularly being reminded how much better others were... But they were not better, only different.

That does a lot of harm to your self-esteem. Once you start comparing your partner to others... that is the end of relationship. Or maybe it ended well before, we just didn't spell it out and continued on as if it still worked and there was hope...

My little write-up was intended to challenge readers to think about themselves, to dig deep into their own hearts, not to put them down or blame them.

And you did well :)

What if a relationship is an action-reaction... the responses are caused by our actions... the others are wrong, but what if it was our insensitivity, our lovelessness that led them to act like that?...

Who started it?... I don't know... finding the root causes is hard.

Reading through the profiles I seem to see a lot of hope and strength. "Only contact me if you have left you baggage behind" and "We all have pasts", but we all look forward to the future. The baggage is pushed behind, trampled upon and buried as if never existed. We move on as if we are clean and strong - and victorious!...

But what is left behind is failure... We pretend it was a success and move into the next relationship with our inability to conquer, for we failed... and we repeat the experient again... and again... hoping that next time around it will be different... and the same approach will bring victory!

But we change nothing... it is the same us with the same weaknesses and frailties, with the same faults and intolerances... and though we hope that this time things will be certainly different and we will make it... we are already equipped to fail again... well before we enter another relationship....

Look at the photos of smiling faces... they will cry a few years on... the face full of hope turns dry and desolate... lifeless..., the smile fades away and tears trickle down the deepening wrinkles... but we get used to the pain and do it again... and again..., the same way in a never ending cycle with the hope that something will finally be different...

But what can be different?... Only the pain tolerance of others... for nothing ever changes... we remain the same... because nothing is ever our fault.

Italy has a huge problem itself. The third largest debt market in the world, nobody has enough money to bail them out. The safest place from economic storms is here in Australia. But it is an illusion to think that our banks are safe. They would have gone belly up if the US didn't print 14 billion dollars and quietly bought up all toxic assets around the world to unplug the financial system in the previous downturn. This time a bigger crisis is on the way, the EU may even break up and the Euro cease to exist as Germany is already fed up with bailing out irresponsible EU members.

But anyone here staying in real estate or stocks will bleed as a lot of red ink will flow. Banks will panic and pull the rug under even sound businesses as they will try to survive and will bankrupt many investors. It is better to get out of these investments and sit on the sidelines until the storm goes away.

Get into safety

Keep in mind that once this bubble bursts and completely deflates market conditions will change. It will be much harder to borrow for real estate investment as banks will consider it extremely risky. People will also hate debt as they did after the Great Depression, for they will realise how hard it is to get out of it. So no, I don't think anyone will think about investing in real estate again for a very long time once we hit the bottom in about 2017-2018. EWI originally expected the bottom to be around the end of 2016, but they also expected the second leg of the downturn to start a year ago, which didn't happen. We are yet to see if this current downturn will be the second leg down or just another hickup, which would push the times out again. The problem is huge (one quadrillion dollars debt needs to deflate in the world to manageable levels), and what is called the great super-cycle will come to an end.

The immigration program will lead to a lot of social tension that can erupt in violence towards them. When Australians cannot get jobs and immigrants are still allowed in in large numbers people may end up rioting. This immigration policy is unfair for both the Australians and the migrants. When I came the numbers were cut back because the country was in a recession and jobs for Australians were more important.

As the government will face the reality of dramatically shrinking tax income they will abolish negative gearing and will seek to tax whatever they can. At the same time as real unemployment skyrockets (not the massaged figures as if you work for a couple of hours a week you are not included in the figures) rent will also fall as people will move into share accommodation or back with their parents. The rental market is already getting depressed on the Gold Coast as many properties are on the market for a number of months before being rented out, and this is just the beginning of what is coming.

Your ideas work in a booming economy when things don't change much - you can let out your property, collect rents regularly, you have your tax break, etc. However, we are about to enter an very gloomy, unpredictable time period and none of our politicians have a clue about what is ahead.

I used to work with a lady who together with her husband lost $175k in the previous downturn, which threw them back by 10 years. There is a much bigger downturn coming that may lead to a great depression deeper than in the 30's.

Depends on my mood and the audience. I can be both...

...but if you buy a property for $500k and by the time you pay off it is only worth $150k it is not much fun. It is not good to buy on the top of the bubble, else you end up with negative equity and cannot even sell until it is paid off.

Get into safety

The big banks you are talking about were caught with their pants down in the 2007-2008 crisis and will be caught in an even worse situation in the near future. Just consider how Westpac carved up most of the mortgage market right on the top of the bubble, and now that the real estate bubble burst they stand to loose the most. Your money is not safe with them.

Three residential towers were built in Southport on the Gold Coast, the third one is still unsold. An investor bought an unit in one of them for $650k and now it is on the market for $450k. There are huge falls on the Gold Coast, much of what is happening doesn't get reported because they want to avoid panic.

Have a lok at the second chart:

Our bubble is the biggest in the world. There is a long way down...

Here is an interesting article titled "What Leads Directly to an Economic Depression?":

It is social mood, that is, how investors collectively feel about the future, that leads to economic reality. When they think bleak times are ahead, they reduce spending, cut jobs, move their cash to safety. The general public becomes more careful about what they spend money on, they give up on the things that are not immediately necessary for daily living, buy second hand instead of new. This, of course, plays out in the real economy, businesses make less money and may even close down leading to higher unemployment, which in turn reduces spending even further as people on the dole don't have much money - hence my call to increase welfare rather than decrease it.

Social tensions are also amplified, for as long as people have money they care not much about anything, but when their pockets are hurt, they get upset. The young generation being the most sensitive to social tensions tend to riot. This is what we saw in the UK, and I think we will also see it happening over here.
